Small Yellow Dot.

You really should be using a marker that can be easily spotted from the background. Red colour still tends to blend in for me so yellow or cyan work best IMO. Also, the smaller the dot the better you can see/aim enemies at far distances.

It is personal preference in the end but you should be able to track your marker with relative ease in most cases.

Yellow, red, cyan or green dot, depending the map and his tint.. Small size, between 24 and 28 max.

Medium red dot.

Tiny cyan dot...which is great for lining up headshots but isn't so great on winter maps like Fueldump when I have the "overbright" ramped up.

Cyan dot (5), not too small or I loose track when it's shaking :)

Many good players use number 9 since it's the only one where the tiny dot is really centered, all other crosshairs are a bit off center in ET. And when thinking about it makes even more sense because it doesn't cover the enemy model. But I'm used to the normal dot so...

But there's a trick you can use to deal with the covering problem: Just set the crosshair a bit lower with cg_crosshairy 1, then you can aim more on shoulder height which I find easier to track since the model is wider and you still get headshots. Also helps if you have good acc but your hs ratio is low :P
