Indeed, the end is for you to understand whatever figures your mind, I have read reviews that "the shimmer" was just a reflection of human decomposition brought by that meteor on a religious or spiritual event, in a wild and at the same time beautiful way. All of the squad members had deep tough problems in real life and were dealing with it, so the approach to think this is an expression for doing some purge? Who knows. What came to my attention is the behavior of the previous squads that entered "the shimmer" were totally different and they didnt destroyed the source of the "contamination" area.
