  6. Happened about 2 weeks ago. I'm on a Mac. Clicked Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer icon. It bounced in the dock a few times, but never launched. Odd. Tried again. Icon bounced once and no launch. This went on for some time but I could never get the game to launch. Restarted my machine a few times. Uninstalled/reinstalled COD4. Even tried a launching the program from a guest account. Nothing. I ended up upgrading my OS thinking it was too far out-of-date (I was running Snow Leapord 10.6.8). Anyway, I've since updated to El Capitan (10.11.1). Still no launch. Ran Disk Utility. No launch. After some Google-fu, I ran across an issue with the game and sound card. In these cases, plugging in a mic seemed to fix the issue. I've tried this and still haven't had any luck. Sorta at a loss at to what steps to take next. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
  7. Symantec says a critical vulnerability within some Apple Mac models could allow hackers to inject systems with persistent rootkit malware. Cyberattackers could, in theory, reflash the computer's firmware and install Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) rootkit malware. The security firm confirmed the existence of the security flaw late on Thursday. The flaw, called the Apple Mac OS X EFI Firmware Security Vulnerability, was originally disclosed May 29 by Apple's security researcher Pedro Vilaca. The problem lies within Mac sleep mode. After Macs awake from this low-power hibernation, a flawed suspend-resume implementation means that some Mac models' flash protections are left unlocked. Virulent malware, such as the EFI rootkit, can be used to remotely control a system and potentially steal user data -- and may not be eradicated even if a system wipe is set in motion. But while this attack is unlikely to impact on users en masse, it could be exploited in order to spy upon specific, targeted users with valuable data or accounts to share. This is not the only Apple-related security flaw to hit the headlines this year. In March, Apple released a patch to protect iOS users from FREAK, a decade-old bug which left users of Apple's Safari and Google Android browsers vulnerable to hacking through a forced downgrade of encryption protocols. Symantec has confirmed the existence of the vulnerability and has rated the flaw as "critical" as it can provide "an attacker with persistent root access to a computer that may survive any disk wipe or operating system reinstallation," according to the firm. "The vulnerability could be remotely exploited by an attacker if used in conjunction with another exploit that provided root access," Symantec said. "While such vulnerabilities are not widespread, they do emerge from time to time. Once an attacker has root access, the only condition required for successful exploit is that the computer enter sleep mode." Vilaca claims the bug can be used with Safari or another remote vector to install an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) rootkit without physical access, and the only requirement is that the computer is suspended within the session. To date, Symantec has tested four different Mac computer models. The security firm found that the Mac Mini 5.1 and MacBook Pro 9.2 are vulnerable, whereas the MacBook Pro 11.3 and MacBook Air 6.2 are not affected. Vilaca's tests verified the MacBook Pro Retina 10.1, MacBook Pro 8.2, MacBook Air 5.1 and Mac Pro 9.1 are vulnerable. All computers tested ran on Apple's latest firmware versions. Vilaca commented: "I'm pretty sure Apple is aware of the bug or at least it would be quite irresponsible for them to not test if their BIOS implementation was vulnerable to the Dark Jedi attack. I had no issues doing PoC tests with it but definitely needs other people to test it out (at least to find which other Macs are vulnerable)." Until Apple issues a firmware patch to fix the security flaw, concerned users are advised to shut down their computers rather than put them in sleep mode. This story originally posted as "Symantec confirms existence of unpatched rootkit Mac security flaw" on ZDNet. Source http://www.cnet.com/
  8. Hi, I'm a Mac user (Version: 10.5.8 Processor: Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 1 MB L3 cache per processor Memory: 2 GB DDR SDRAM) I just started playing ET and I don't know much. I've been able to play on vanilla servers, but servers with mods are too confusing for me. I found out I was playing with no one except bots (which freaked me out) so I looked for a still active group of players and found the Fearless Assassins. Now I downloaded Jaymod and SilEnT mod but I don't really know what to do with them, I just saw that they popped up in my Wolfenstein ET folder so I left it there and didn't touch it. Then, I attempted to join a F|A server, and the loading was fine until it said "Awaiting Gamstate..." Then, after about 5 seconds, it crashed saying "Wolfenstein cannot continue: VM_create on UI failed." Can someone help please! I'm really new to this whole mod thing and I'm not much of a computer gamer. Please be specific because I take things very literally in something as confusing as this to me. If there is anymore info I need to provide, I will try to provide it.
  9. If you ever tried to record and view a demo on Mac OS X, you will have stumbled across the phenomenon that you can't view the demo you just recorded. This little workflow is going to show you how to efficiently manage your CoD4 demos, based on a cheater with the name Player123. Recording Demos The best practice to find demos of a cheater you recorded is to name the demo files after him, i.e. the demo of this cheater should be named player123.dm_1. To record a demo, join the Spectator team and follow the suspected player. Then open your console and execute the following command: /record player123 To open your console, you will have to activate it first. Go to your game's Options and set Enable Console to Yes. You can then open it by pressing the tilde key (~). Once you executed the /record command, the game will start recording your screen to the file you specified and indicate the size of the demo in the lower left corner of the screen. When you finished recording and got all the proof you needed, stop it by executing /stoprecord. Viewing Demos To view the demo you just recorded, run /demo player123. The problem is that this will return the error message "demos/player123.dm_1 not found.". For some reason demos can only be viewed in the ModWarfare mod. By default, your recorded demos will be stored in: [Retail Version] /Applications/Call of Duty 4/Call of Duty 4 Data/main/demos/ [Mac App Store Version] /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty 4/main/demos/ In order to be able to view them, you have to copy them to the demos folder in your ModWarfare folder. If the folder doesn't exist yet, simply create it. [Retail Version] /Applications/Call of Duty 4/Call of Duty 4 Data/Mods/ModWarfare/demos/ [Mac App Store Version] /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty 4/Mods/ModWarfare/demos/ Then start the game and click on Mods. Select ModWarfare and hit Launch. In the ModWarfare screen, open the console and execute /demo player123. Tips Copying each demo before being able to view it can be a pain. To skip that step, you could create a symbolic link from the ModWarfare demo folder to the main demo folder. Open your Terminal and execute the following command (the upper one for the retail version, the lower one for the Mac App Store version): ln -s /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ Data/main/demos/ /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ Data/Mods/ModWarfare/demos ln -s /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/main/demos/ /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Mods/ModWarfare/demos If you followed the tutorial and created the demos folder in the ModWarfare folder, you will get an error saying "File exists". Simply remove the folder and re-execute the command (the upper one for the retail version, the lower one for the Mac App Store version): rm -R /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ Data/Mods/ModWarfare/demos ln -s /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ Data/main/demos/ /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ Data/Mods/ModWarfare/demos rm -R /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Mods/ModWarfare/demos ln -s /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/main/demos/ /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4/Mods/ModWarfare/demos Hints The Library folder in your user folder is hidden by default. To access it, click on Go, hold down the Alt-Key and click on Library.

    OSX 10.7.4

So I'm currently running Snow Leopard (10.6.7). I'm debating whether or not I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.7.4). A lot of what I read in the comments of the upgrade in the App Store is that Mountain Lion is garbage compared to Snow Leopard. I am no longer running anything built for a PowerPC processor, so losing Rosetta won't be a problem. I'm more concerned about whether or not everything will run smoothly. I've heard issues of a lot of web browser crashes with anything other than Safari. I've also heard of some instances of programs randomly not running properly anymore (like Microsoft Office), and even reducing the battery life. The only reason I'm thinking of the upgrade is that I don't want to get left behind in all of the software updates and such. Can anyone offer any input? For reference, I'm running a 2010 MacBook Pro.
  15. As many of you know, last month we announced Logitech G, unveiling eight new products and our new approach to gaming accessories. The new lineup, which includes six redesigned mice and keyboard favorites and two new headsets, will be available for you to own later this month. Today, we are excited to share that Logitech Gaming Software (LGS) has been updated to support Mac OS for our full keyboard and mouse lineup. Now Mac gamers can enjoy the same great personalization and customized control our PC customers have come to reply on. You can download the latest version of LGS from the Logitech support page for each compatible product. 17. Origin for Mac: The Alpha Starts Today! Mac gamers rejoice: Origin for Mac will be launching soon, and starting today we’re offering you the opportunity to take it for a spin before the official release .This open alpha will only be available to a few thousand users in North America and the United Kingdom, so don’t wait—download your copy of our new Mac client (alpha build) today. With Origin for Mac we’ll be able to offer the same Origin experience and features that define our PC app — cloud storage, auto-patching, friends list, and more — to Mac users everywhere. We’re very excited about the upcoming launch of Origin for Mac and the opportunity to reach the millions of Mac-based gamers out there. We’re continuing to build Origin into a gaming service that truly lets you purchase and play anywhere, anytime. You may notice that the Origin Store tab is not yet live in this alpha trial; rest assured, the store will be live—with a great catalog of EA and partner titles—when we formally release the client. Additionally, we’re not yet able to provide the same one-click streaming live to Twitch in Origin for Mac (we’ll be adding this as soon as possible). Otherwise, the Mac client feels and behaves exactly like the PC version. Just like PC gamers, you'll be able to add non-Origin games to your library, use the Origin In Game overlay, chat with friends across platforms and games, and can continue your saved progress from any Origin-enabled Mac. In order to make sure you can get the most out of this alpha trial, we’ve added a free copy of PopCap’s smash hit puzzle game, Bookworm, to your My Games library. This game is yours to download and keep, on us. We hope you enjoy it. Finally, you’ll notice a Feedback button in your My Games library; it’s only there temporarily, but we hope you will use it to share your thoughts with us – after all, that’s what alpha access is for! If you have any further questions, check the FAQ or comment below. Your participation in this alpha trial is greatly appreciated, and your feedback will help ensure the best possible experience for all Mac gamers when we officially launch. If you have a Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better, we hope you’ll download the alpha and start gaming today. We always love to hear your feedback, so if you would like to have a conversation about our Mac client, or about additional features and functionality you would like to see come to Origin in the future, leave us a comment below and we’ll do our best to get back to you. source

But now i feel like upgrading my os. Should I upgrade to Lion? Should i not give in to the hype of Lion? or Should i wait for Mountain Lion (this summer)? help me out, please?
  20. hey guyz, I'm struggling hard since a few weeks to understand what kind of mess I'm in ... I played ET few years ago, and I would have been glad to play it again lately. But it seems like I can't anymore: I'm a mac user, I'm having the 'invalid guid' message when enabling punkbuster. I googled it and read the whole internet, tried any trick that was provided anywhere: - redid the etkey several time - reinstalled ET - activating punkbuster through the console with some random codes - updating PB manually (which failed, I did not found ET in the menus...) Things are always buggy, and I still have the "Invalid GUID bnblablablabla you should try again later' message. Fortunately, I've been lucky enough to find a quick solution, I can play on some servers by disabling Punkbuster but I loose my xp each time, which is a pain in the ass ... Could anyone please help ? thanks a bunch !!
  21. I've owned a mac for quite a while now. I'm just wondering whats the best/most useful antivirus/security programmes designed specifically for the Mac. I've used all the free ones from the apple store but never found them that great. You maybe wondering why I use them. Well to protect my mac as the threats of virus' have increased and to protect friends and family from windows virus' that I may have on my mac. So back to the original question what's the most useful?
  22. Hi guys, So i was recently kicked of the FA server on COD4, because of the manual update for the PB (punkbuster) files. Aspyr (COD4) are aware that many Mac users are having problems since Version 2.301 of the PB Client for COD4 that was released for auto-update on Monday. Unfortunately for those users, a manual update will be required. To manually update, Mac users should close COD4 if it is open and then download mc002301.mac. (follow this link to download : http://support.aspyr.com/attachments/token/kywrqijib8rsdqc/?name=mc002301.mac) Then move this file to : User/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty 4/pb/dll. (For OSX Lion users, to find the folder, just press cmd+shift+G to bring up a search window in Finder and type in '~/library' to access this directory and of course copy and paste this file into Application Support/Call of Duty 4/pb/dll.) P.S.: Do not delete the other file in the folder. Normally after this, Punkbuster will not kick any of you if you join any of PB-protected servers. Let me know if it has worked for any of you guys having this issue. Diablox9. (xfire: diab10x9)
