I updated from Win7 Pro to Win 10 Pro last Tuesday night on a 5-year-old home-built computer with an I7-970 CPU on a Rampage 3 motherboard.  My drive configurations made it both easier and harder to update.  :D

I would suggest that you search the Internet for people who have updated that same laptop that you have and see what their experiences were.  If you don't find results for exactly the same laptop, then check those from the same manufacturer and the same year and models most like your own.

Microsoft gives you 30 days to decide to revert back to your original Windows OS down from Win 10.

It's fine if you upgrade all of your drivers.

Problem is, a lot of people upgrade, forget to upgrade all of the relevant drivers, and it causes issues. I've been using Win10 for a while (and I was against it in the beginning), and it turns out it's actually pretty decent. It improved some issues I had with Win8.

To which drivers are you referring?  :)  Actually, I have a program that is supposed to check for driver updates.  I may have some to do now.

Thanks, Sid, I didn't think of that at all, having few problems.

Video is probably the main issue. Especially if you're using the IntelHD series. With AMD and Nvidia, they typically put out drivers constantly. Intel is a little slower. Motherboard if your manufacturer updates them. Some manufacturers of hardware, who don't typically release updates after the initial stock drivers, released newer ones after Win 10 because there were conflicting issues.

A tool that checks for out of date drivers would help considerably. I think you can go to device management and manually check each piece of hardware for updates as well. Although in the past, that's been hit or miss.

I had those upgrade notifications for weeks but kept ignoring them.

And finally decided to upgrade before the free upgrade would expire, both on home and office computers.

The process ended fine, restored all files and settings, so far no drivers issues, it's very stable, pleasant to use, optimized on some features. I would advise to remove alot of intrusive windows options though.

The only main weakness of that upgrade, to my point of view, was the duration. Last step just took something like 7 hours, even if I had saved all my heavy files on an external disk and removed them from pc.

MS says that you can update to win10 and it won't remove your data, unless you do a Clean Install aka Full Install.  I updated over my Win7 pro installation, but I took the precaution of unplugging my D:/ Data Drive first.

My OS was on a c:/SSD and I had already copied my important data from the D: partition on my data-HDD to an external Drive.  I cloned my 119gb SSD to a 512gb SSD and updated to Win10 on the larger SSD.  I also unplugged my D:E:F:G:-partitioned HDD, while updating, just to be very safe.

I can say that the Win10 updater did not remove any of the "links", mine or system-links, to the missing D: drive, though it did rename my DVD drive to D:.  That caused me some confusion after I reconnected the HDD.  I also have some programs installed on the D:HDD and that Win10 updater did not act like a "registry-cleaner" and remove them from the new system.

Everything seems to be working OK.  Chrome still appears on my task-bar, but IE disappeared.  You can find your old IE program by searching for "Internet Explorer" in the 'search the web and Windows' box on the left side of the taskbar.  I created a shortcut to it and now run it like normal.  It has all the history, bookmarks and home-page sites.  I use it for eMail, FB and the like.  I use Chrome for FA and most other work, sometimes getting up to 50 tabs on it, "OMG, Xernicus!"

In my system, IE is in "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe", and the "start in" in the shortcut is to "%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%".

I am taking the slow way to get used to this new OS.

Oops, I just poked into the innards of win10, I'd better close this before it restarts or something!

I got the upgrade the day it rolled out, last year. Been using it on my daily driver for a year now and I have no complaints.
Maybe took around an hour or so to install on my PC, and the existing W7 installation was super corrupted.

I would say it's a worthwhile (and while free, almost absurd not to do so) upgrade from Win7, though I didn't necessarily think so at first. Runs much smoother actually.

You can still get a Win10 upgrade for free, just follow this (official!) link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

Just click the "Upgrade Now" link, and run the downloaded EXE. There are no checks or confirmations, other than to verify you have a legal copy of Windows.

We have not announced an end date of the free upgrade offer for customers using assistive technology.

We will make a public announcement prior to ending the offer.

Will MS search for an Assistive Technology-type program on the customer's computer or some other proof-of-truth? :)

;) There are no checks, searches, or anything of the kind. I can verify this as I have used it myself to upgrade some friends and family who didn't realize the deadline.
