I say beat the sucker up depending on what they did, they just do something like say, "you mad bro" ....well then no...but if they hit you or cuss you out, then i say teach the kid to respect their elders and smack em.

So basically you're saying it's alright to beat the hell out of your kid if he/she did something wrong? Or do you mean just a little smack that doesn't even hurt?

There's better ways to raise your child instead of smacking them you know... Pssst, watch the Supernanny Jo on TV, she's got the best tips ever..no smacking involved at all =P

Me and me older brother got a slap ( like stated before: more shock then pain) every now and then when we were bad. My youngest brother (now 5) never has and never will, and honestly? He deserves one every once and a while. I love my brother more then anything, but he really is a bad kid and if I was his dad, he would get a slap sometimes. He doesn't listen to our parents at all because he doesn't fear them at all. When they threathen to punish him, he basically just laughs in their face, because they never really punish him (accept maybe 'no candy for a week, or no tv, but that's not a punishment, come on.)

Kids will be kids and that's obvious they get in trouble,it's like their job, little spanking on the butt should do the thing, but when parents punishing becomes physical or mental violence then i think those parents don't deserve their kids.

I dont think your children should fear you. i would hate the thought of my kids being scared of me. I want them to be able to come and speak to me about anything and not fear my reaction

I don't have kids, but I have similar experience to say this. If the kid respects the guardian enough, even giving them a mild negative reaction to their action is enough to give them a shock. Also, spanking (no matter how mildly) will hurt some kids pride, and cause more harm than good; everyone is different. Some kids are simply retarded, no matter how good the parents are, and some kids never need punishment period.

Take it case by case?

It's too ignorant to just say the parenting decides the child's behaviour, and ignore that fact that each young person has aspects of personality development that are beyond a parent's control.

Sorry to weigh in so late but............

We always got spanked as kids holy shit when mom got out the green belt we knew we were in trouble.

As far as with my own kids the only time they ever got spanked is when they did something extremely dangerous like run into the street or stick a fork in the electrical socket. Other than that we discipline using other methods such as taking away privelages such as computer or tv time usually works.
