Lag Issues

Hi guys,

I've been having lots of lag issues since I came back to the game after a year of absence. On my side, nothing has changed except the fact that I moved to a new city and switched ISP. PC is the same, ET configs too, still using 2.60b version of the game. The problem seems to be on every ET server, US based (silent1 and HC) or EU based (Beg2).

Basically, on US servers like silent1, my normal ping is between 80 and 95. But since I connected back 3-4 weeks ago, my ping jumps around between 150 and 200. It lasts for some time (5min), then it goes back to 80-90 for a couple minutes then back up again, and so on.

Before trying anything, I wanted to see if some of you guys had any insights that might help my case. It's impossible to play like this ^_^

I did run a couple of MTR diagnostics with WinMTR (hours apart), and it looks pretty bad around 3 hops (in orange below). But I don't know what the figures were like before the issue started. I also took some ss of my lagometer.

I have no idea about what could be the problem. I'd bet on ISP or WiFi. Do you have any trouble with other online games?

I think you mentioned that that your pc is connected via wifi, right? This could be the issue also. Ethernet cable is the best for stability. If you can't use cable because modem is too far away, try to have the least amount of walls and stuff inbetween your modem and your pc. And, the closer, the better.

Also, new modems have 2 bandwidths, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. The first has lower speed but more range, the second is faster, but less range. If there are a lot of walls/closets/stairs inbetween your pc and your modem, choose 2.4GHz, since it can go through walls easier than 5.8GHz. It's possible that your pc and other devices can't detect 5.8GHz, specially if they're a bit old, even if your modem has 5.8GHz. Furthermore, 2.4GHz can saturate easier than 5.8GHz if lots of devices are using that bandwidth, in which case, maybe choose 5.8GHz or make other devices in your home use 5.8GHz and you stick to 2.4GHz.

A few other things you could try to test are:

1. Trying default config

2. Trying ETLegacy with default config

3. Reinstalling ET 2.60b and using default config, and then your config

It looks like your ISP (routing) is at fault. I would recommend to do some more ping tests to your router to make sure that your home network is working properly, and if it is, I would then contact the ISP and notify them of the issue.

Some time ago I was having lag issues (very much like yours) and using a VPN fixed the issue. It only only happened a few times however. If you're locked in a contract and can't change ISP I'd say maybe give that a go.

Btw, nice to see you're back!

I've been having the same issue since yesterday evening. I was playing normally with a ping of 120-140, but six hours later the game became unplayable, with a ping of 300-400. All other servers are stable with a good ping; only the two Jay servers in the USA have this issue. My download speed, internet connection, etc., are all stable without any limitations. I suspect it’s a routing problem between my provider and the server host, as I’ve ruled out pretty much everything else. This is the first time in years I’ve had such problems with Jay1. Perhaps someone can help me or give me some tips. I’m grateful for any help.

Edit: And have other people had this problem, or are they currently experiencing it? If so, did it resolve on its own?

My advice is ... verify your route with WinMTR. That will tell you where the problem is.

I have a second screen that i use to verify my route live with WinMTR.

Those are in the range of

62.115.116.230 IP Address Location and Details

A Swedish company, "Arelion Sweden AB " It might not actually be routing through Sweden.

That IP-checker above would not accept " adm-bb2-link.ip.twelve99.net " as input.  Searching for it finds others with complaints.

ALSO, it appears that the old familiar "Telia" has become "Arelion" in around 2022.  I used to see "Telia" a long of winMtrs from Europe.

Quote

(formerly known as Telia Carrier) has a long history of providing Tier 1 IP services to the world's Research and Education community.

They are part of the "BackBone" of the Internet:

The largest providers, known as Tier 1 networks, have such comprehensive networks that they do not purchase transit agreements from other providers

It is a real disappointment that a Tier 1 system is having such problems, but others have been reported, too.

You can try "/players" in the console to make sure that your rate is 45000 or above and that your maxPackets is 100 or 125.  (ETL clients should show as 125).

AH, I had forgotten "restart your router" as described in the link below.  I have had to restart my computer a few times when my Internet seemed down, but that was for all services, not just ET.

Exactly, network is crazy. Just with Arelion, it goes from belgium to Amsterdam, to london then back to belgium.

Got 50000 rate and 100 maxPackets

Anyway, I got a technician to come and test/check everything from home next saturday.

So either it gets solved then. Or I'll switch ISP or try a VPN.

I've been tracking this issue for a week now, and it happens almost every evening during my peak hours when the server is busy (European time). My ping jumps to 350+ ms, but then, around late at night—around 1-2 a.m. my time—it starts to normalize back to 110-140 ms as usual. I've been with my internet provider for over 10 years and never had such problems before. Could it be that there's an issue on the FA servers' end? I'm an absolute noob when it comes to this stuff.

Greetings from overseas.

What I have noticed is there is a LOT of ddos traffic going on in EU atleast lately. Many ppl with certain modems are affected to this for the reason to not have it updated or using the default password: admin.

Not many ISP have a good protection against this kind of traffic coming inside from their clients, so not necessary it is the ISP fault.

Imo you could try to change the DNS server apart from your ISP, but it is up to you, nor does it help. As for the change for DNS I wont say no more and it takes some knowledge anyways AND can mess up your connection.

Just saying, that our servers most likely are not the issue until you provide a good winmtr report about it.
