ahha I don't know what to use. In cs go i liked higher resolutions better but every pro played 4:3 so i switched back to low and I started to get a lot better and hit targets easier. Im just wondering if other people kinda feel the same way. Higher resolution looks better but harder to hit targets in my opinion

for at least a decade I've done 1920x(1080 or 1200)... when i was at my best it was a 24" monitor.

Recently last couple years I've done 2560x1600, ET looks pretty but I hopped back to 1920 and seemed to do better. Felt like a lot of hits weren't registering, maybe the engine or maybe its all in my head.

Also tried et on my triple monitor setup at 5760x1080 or so, but it wasn't very good. Just stretched out. L4D2 was awesome though, i could damn near see behind myself LOL

Usually ppl use their desktop max resolution, other than that looks weird...Imo.

In case you are not familiar how to set it right, add this in a cfg file or type in console or add in startup line of quicklaunch.

set r_displayrefresh 60 <--- if screen can handle more, change to max

set r_mode -1
set r_customheight 1050 <--- change to your desktop max
set r_customwidth 1680 <--- change to your desktop max
set r_fullscreen 1

Thanks Rendel , its not often i have to change my Monitor but mine died the other day an im using one from a museum lol, i forgot all this :cheers

There really isnt a good reason to not use your native res...

Well, idk man. If your pc is bad enough to the point where you can't run native res without losing fps, I think it makes a lot of sense to use lower resolutions to maximize your framerate. I think that's a good enough reason.

Besides, ET wasn't designed to use widescreen anyway, so it isn't unusual for someone to use 4:3. If you've been using 90fov on 4:3 for years, you are losing around 16 degrees of vertical field of view. That may not make a difference to you, but it looks like shit to a lot of people. May not make logical sense, but I know if I feel more comfortable on a different aspect ratio, i'm using it.

I'd say the reason for losing fps is most likely in your cfg or the lack of it or wrong values.

Losing the shadows, bullet traces and rain/sun/sky/explosions/fog/blood is what does the best if you have a weak pc. All of that shit is on by default.

Yes. I am aware, and my config has all of that stuff off. Still, even I don't get a steady 125fps. You have to have a halfway decent pc to play W:ET at a steady framerate despite it's age. People who have shit PC's have to do everything they can to maximize their framerate. when you have already done all you can, lowering your resolution in addition to changing the appropriate cvars can considerably increase your FPS depending on the game.

U never get stable fps on crowded servers regardless of PC specs, i have top notch pc and still FPS isn't stable on certain maps when HC is full, game is just too old and too badly optimized to have full advantage of new gear come in play.

ET is optimal on pre 2010 equipment. newer hardware doesn't scale well. ET uses hardly any memory so it doesnt matter if you have 16gb, i think the engine is limited to what 512mb, maybe under 1gb tops? and ET only uses one CPU thread for starters so core count doesnt matter, frequency does.

graphic cards have advanced a ton, but having moved away from legacy products and opengl in both hardware and software they don't really do any better either. I think my dual core 939 system from 2007 had higher FPS than the one I built recently (333 or higher versus 125 most of the time), but the newer system smokes the old one in every single way otherwise. Like I said ET doesn't scale to new hardware at all
