Ol Smoke Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Think about this for a minute. I am a guitarist and bassist and there are times I wish I knew the chops and licks that some of these guitar players have on hand. I used to say to myself, "I wish I could play like ..." If a Genie came to you and granted you one wish to be able to play a guitar like someone and have their mental abilities of music, who would you choose? There would be no complications from this wish, it would be straight up. For this thread you can choose up to three people, since it's hard to nail down a single player. Also, find a short video of them playing something, so we can see what you like about that person's style. My selections would be the following: Vince Gill and Glen Campbell The reason being is that Vince Gill is a flawless guitar picker of several instruments and Glen Campbell can play any style of music with relentless precision. Glen was part of the "Wrecking Crew" in the 50's and 60's and was a perfectionist in the studio. So between those two guys I could find great jobs with great bands and know how to really play and read music, without the stress of trying to try to play the right licks all the time, I could just relax and play. https://youtu.be/Stv3ugVFZD8?t=174 I forgot the greatest picker of all time.... Pepperonipizza Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Ah man, great post! I learned to play the guitar by myself in my teenage years. My picks would be 1: Mason Williams, mainly because I tried to play his "Classical Gas" until my fingers almost bled. I have a great deal of admiration for people that can write a song with no lyrics in it that is still able to tell a story. Classical Gas has a very special place in my heart for these reasons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mREi_Bb85Sk 2: Mark Knopfler. I dig his style a lot and I personally find it extremely hard to perform solos/improvisations that don't sound repetitive and predictable. I was always baffled by the way the guitar in "Sultans of Swing" is very liberal in its variations throughout the chords, as well as the very unpredictable but very cool solos that are in the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0ffIJ7ZO4U 6 Quote

J o N Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I'm sure everyone here could name tons of guitarists they love, but these are my top two in terms of envy alone Paul Gilbert has always been my favourite guitarist! He's mellowed out a bit with the Shreddyness in recent years, but he's still insanely good The other one that sprung to mind straight away was Guthrie Govan - probably the most well rounded guitarist ever; he can play absolutely everything to a ridiculous standard 3 Quote
NormanCorn Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 As of right now: 1. John Frusciante: Melodic with all kinds of feeling. Not TOO bluesy for me. 2. Pat Metheney: Since I get to have their "mental abilities" I will pick a musical genius. Teaching college level music theory at Berklee at 18 or something? I would go a different direction, of course, but still. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBeLJdm1MTs 3. Kevin Shields: Because shoegaze is so chic right now. Also, love guitar pedals. 1 Quote

Ol Smoke Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 The Baby Metal player sounds a lot like Steve Vai. Same style and some of the same riffs. 1 Quote
