  1. Underwater cables are the invisible force driving the internet, with many funded in recent years by internet giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook parent Meta. Damage to these subsea networks can cause widespread internet outages, as happened following the Taiwan earthquake in 2006. Internet service across swaths of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has been disrupted following damages to undersea cables of major providers to the areas. A statement from Hong Kong telecom HGC Global Communications says as much as 25% of the traffic in the areas has been impacted. The company is currently rerouting traffic to keep disruptions to a minimum and “extending assistance to affected businesses There are more than 15 undersea internet cables in the Red Sea. To have four damaged at a single time is ”exceptionally rare,” HGC said in a separate earlier statement. The disruption of the cables did not disconnect any country from the internet, but the Wall Street Journal reports service in India, Pakistan, and parts of East Africa was noticeably degraded. No services have yet offered a reason for the cuts. Yemen’s telecom ministry denied speculation it was responsible for the failures, saying it was “keen to keep all telecom submarine cables…away from any possible risks.” Underwater cables are responsible for most of the internet’s data traffic. They’re cheaper than land-based cables, but are prone to damage from ships’ anchors. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has experts wondering about the timing and severity of this outage, though. Iran-based Houthi has been particularly aggressive in the Red Sea, including in mid-February when a cargo ship was abandoned by its crew following an Houthi attack. The ship, which had weighed anchor, drifted for weeks before sinking. Houthi control of the region and the ongoing strife in Yemen makes repairing the damaged cables more complicated. One of the four companies affected said it expects to start that process early in the second quarter, though permit issues, weather, and the civil war in that country could impact th

  4. A man in his 40s has died and another is in a serious condition after an ammonia gas leak at a Carlsberg factory. Emergency services were called to the brewery in Northampton town centre at 12.30pm on Wednesday following reports of an industrial accident. Twenty two people, including 11 staff, two police officers and nine firefighters, were taken to hospital. We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this tragic incident occurred Julian Momen, Carlsberg UK A 51-year-old man working on the site remains in a serious but stable condition, Carlsberg confirmed. Julian Momen, chief executive officer, Carlsberg UK, said: "We are deeply, deeply saddened by today's tragic incident and subsequent fatality. "Our immediate thoughts are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time and we will support them in every way we can. "Our further thoughts and support are with our colleagues and members of the emergency services who are being treated in hospital. "One of our colleagues remains in a serious but stable condition. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of everyone working for us. "We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this tragic incident occurred and we will be in a position to say more once a full investigation has been concluded." In a statement, the force added: "Other staff from Carlsberg and emergency service personnel remain at the hospital receiving treatment. "The emergency services were called to Carlsberg at around 12.30pm today following reports of a gas leak. "Northamptonshire Police are working with the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the incident." The gas leak was confined to the factory site and there is not thought to be a wider risk to members of the public. Staff were evacuated from the site when the leak happened. A statement from the three emergency servcies said: "Six fire pumps were called to the location to secure the site. "There are no cordons around the property, and roads remain open, although motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible to reduce congestion."
  5. A tourist bus hit by a train in Nakhon Pathom in Thailand Sunday, leaving 30 injured and three people dead. The impact occurred as the double-decker bus was slowly crossing the tracks and a speeding train crashed into it, causing the bus to spin out of control. The video shows the impact from two separate camera angles, revealing the intensity of the crash. The bus was taking a group of workers from a factory west of Bangkok to the island of Koh Samui for a holiday, according to a local police officer. The three dead were Thai nationals. Road accidents are a common in Thailand. A study by University of Michigan ranked Thailand’s roads as the second most dangerous in the world. 6. Kent Police are investigating a string of reports in recent weeks of people wearing clown and Halloweeen masks in travelling around in vans and approaching children Police have deployed extra patrols around schools following reports of pupils being stalked by people wearing clown masks. Kent Police are investigating a number of reports in recent weeks of people travelling around in vans and approaching children. Officers said some people have been wearing clown or Halloween masks in a bid to try to scare pupils walking to and from schools . Parents and children in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge have now been urged by police to be vigilant following the “suspicious incidents” . Chief Inspector Dave Pate said: “We are still working to establish whether any offences have been committed. “However, I want to assure parents that we take the safety of all children very seriously and have extra officers on patrol around schools.” Last week the Mirror Online reported on clowns who were targeting pupils at Hillview School for Girls, in Tonbridge, Kent. Since then, there have been reports of people wearing clown masks being spotted in a van on St John's Road in Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools in the town issued their own advice after a boy was approached by two men in a van on Wednesday morning. Last week head teacher Elaine Buchanan sent an email to parents warning them about the incidents, which happened earlier in the month. She said some of her students had been approached on separate occasions by two people wearing black outfits and white clown masks. The 'evil clown' phenomenon has been growing in the UK and especially in France, with one town banning the wearing of clown masks following a spate of violent attacks. Source http://www.mirror.co.uk/
  7. A sheepish driver has apologised to a petrol station after he sparked a large blaze when trying to kill a spider with his lighter as he filled up. The motorist can be heard on surveillance video at the garage in suburban Detroit looking at the car and asking: "Is that a spider in there?" Flames are then seen erupting along the car's side, the pump and the pavement as the man darts to safety. Petrol station attendant Susan Adams hit the stop button on the pump and called firefighters, but the man had used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames by the time they arrived. He escaped injury and his vehicle suffered little damage, but the petrol pump was destroyed. Ms Adams said the man returned to say sorry the next day. "He was sorry, he said he didn't know," she told WJBK TV. "It is just one of those things that happen - stupidity." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSrwQ-d090g Source http://news.sky.com/
  8. School pupils and civil engineering students have set a new world record after building a footbridge - made entirely from Meccano. The temporary bridge, spanning over 100ft across Belfast's Clarendon dock, has been recognised by representatives from Guinness World Records as the world's largest Meccano structure. It has been designed and constructed by a group of students at Queen's University Belfast and local school children in a bid to encourage more young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. Civil engineering lecturer Dr Daniel McPolin said he hoped the project would inspire his students. "I just thought it would be good to get them away from the books, to get them away from the computers and calculators, and to give them a chance to create something really, really exciting," Speaking ahead of the inspection by world record officials, Dr McPolin said he was hopeful the structure would measure up. "We're fairly confident," he said. "We've measured the bridge. If it turns out to not be big enough, that would be pretty embarrassing for us." The Big Bridge Build project, which includes 11,000 pieces of Meccano and has taken a year to create, has already attracted attention from the engineering and architectural world. The bridge has also been tested for weight, with several people having walked across it. Source http://news.sky.com/
  9. Jenna Coleman, who plays Doctor Who's assistant Clara Oswald, has announced that she is leaving the show. There were rumours earlier this week that Coleman was preparing to exit the BBC's long-running sci-fi adventure series, but she has now confirmed the news. "It’s been in the works for a very long time," she said during an interview on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 show. "Steven [showrunner Stephen Moffat] and I sat down a year and a half ago and tried to work out the best place to do it, and the best place to tell a really good story. Hopefully that's what we've done. "I think it's really cool. Obviously we're not going to give away any details, but it will happen at some point this season." "There's not a lot of jobs where you get to go to work and have a spaceship, and an alien is your best mate, and also run away from monsters," she told Grimshaw. "You kind of think this job is only going to happen once. It's been so much fun." Coleman joined the show in 2012, when Matt Smith was playing the Doctor. She remained by the Timelord's side when he regenerated in 2014 into current star Peter Capaldi. Her decision to quit the show coincides with the announcement that she is to play Queen Victoria in an eight-part mini-series for British channel ITV. Source http://www.gamespot.com/
  10. Paul Pelton, who filmed two injured teens. What would you do if you witnessed a crashed car? Would you try to help the victims? Or would you merely take out your phone, enter the crashed car, film the injured and then put the video on Facebook? The latter describes the accusations leveled at 41-year-old Paul Pelton of Lorain, Ohio. As the Northeast Ohio Media Group reports, a Honda sedan was traveling quickly toward a level crossing. The driver lost control, and the car went off the road and crashed into a house. It caught fire, and local residents rushed to help. Police say that Pelton took out his cell phone, began filming the teens as they lay injured, and then entered the crashed vehicle through the back door to film some more. Lorain Police Det. Buddy Sivert told the Northeast Ohio Media Group: "He went right in after the crash, before the rescuers or police arrived." In a Facebook post, the police said: "While others were rendering aid to these boys, a male took the opportunity to video this horrible scene with his cell phone. In the video, the male makes comments that the boys were 'idiots,' and holds his cell phone so that he can film these two boys who were in medical crisis. The male then opens the back door of this vehicle and leans in to continue capturing video." One of the teens, 17-year-old Cameron Friend, died of his injuries. Police say that Pelton posted his video to Facebook under the name Paul Santucci. It has now been taken down. He also is said to have offered it to various news groups, in exchange for money. The tricky part with respect to the law is that the police could only charge him with vehicle trespass. This is a fourth-degree misdemeanor. ABC 13 reported that Pelton said in a video of apology also posted to Facebook: "I just wanted to educate people to slow down. I didn't do that to have some type of gore video." Of course not. The Lorain Police, on the other hand, added this on Facebook: "The Lorain Police Department would like to remind citizens that they are allowed and encouraged to help one another in emergencies if they can do so safely, and that rendering aid or comfort to a dying young man and his severely injured friend is a commendable and kindly act. Persons are not, however, allowed to trespass into a person's vehicle criminally and without permission for the seemingly singular cause of filming, a young man's dying moments, for profit." 11. SpaceX this week announced plans to construct a mile-long Hyperloop test track next to its headquarters in Hawthorne, California, scheduled for completion by June 2016. The company concurrently announced an open competition for university students and independent engineering teams to design and build the best Hyperloop pod. Entrants will be able to test their pods on the track. "These tests will provide proof points at a reasonable cost, and will help build support for the project," said Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research. Why California and Not Texas? SpaceX boss Elon Musk earlier this year contemplated building a Hyperloop test track in Texas. The switch from Texas is possibly the result of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies' focus on Central California and Interstate 5, suggested Richard Sear, global vice president of the visionary innovation group at Frost & Sullivan. HTT earlier this year reached an agreement to develop a five-mile-long installation of the Hyperloop track in Quay Valley, a sustainable model town being built on 7,500 acres along California's Interstate 5 freeway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Construction will begin in 2016, and the track will be built using HTT's tube, capsule and station models. The five-mile track will cost about US$100 million, Sear told TechNewsWorld, most of it to be funded by HTT's forthcoming IPO. HTT already has raised $8.5 million in a first round of funding, and there are rumors it's planning an $80 million round later this year. There's speculation that Sherpa Ventures founder Shervin Pishevar, an early stage investor in Uber and other companies, will cough up half that amount. "The topography of California is suitable, and the ultimate buy-in of other partners will likely rest on California more so than Texas, leaning a decision to favor California," Sear said. One Mile May Not Be Enough The length of the SpaceX test track may be problematic. Given that pods on the Hyperloop would run at up to 760 mph, it remains doubtful whether there will be enough track to accelerate the pods to anywhere near that speed and decelerate safely to a stop. The one-mile test track "would not suffice to offer any viable feedback," Sear said. "People even argue that five miles would not be long enough." Although a mile-long track would provide only limited testing capabilities, "this is a new and ambitious effort, and one that's going to be fraught with challenges. So, just as we did in the early days of the space program, you take little steps at a time," Tirias' McGregor told TechNewsWorld. You run tests "for the way you think things will work -- modify them, test them again, and then move on to the next phase." Do the Math It's not clear that the mathematics of the Hyperloop proposal make sense, argued Matt Johnson, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. Problems with Musk's proposal, he said, include the estimated costs, the suggested 30-second intervals between pod departures, safety considerations, the actual amount of traffic the Hyperloop can carry as compared with the freeways, the fact that the Hyperloop will bypass all the towns and cities between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the location of its beginning and end points -- they won't run into either city's downtown area. The success of a demo on a five-mile-long track "is very speculative at this stage," Frost's Sear acknowledged -- but if it works, it "would in theory shift the funding model from a crowdsourced one to significant inward investment from organizations looking to capitalize on a proven disruptive mobility alternative in a highly lucrative market." The Hyperloop proposal is technically flawed, according to researchers at NASA's Glenn Research Center. Its tube would have to be twice the size originally planned, and the maximum pod travel speed would have to be cut down to 620 mph, they argued in a paper presented earlier this year at the 2015 AIAA SciTech Conference. The concept remains possible, they concluded, but implementing it will require a more complete design based on additional engineering and economic analyses. Source http://www.technewsworld.com
  12. Saúl Jiménez Fortes was gored twice and asked the doctor to stitch him up so he could return to kill the animal Bullfighter Jimenez Fortes is gored in the neck at the San Isidro Bullfight Festival, Madrid, Spain A bullfighter narrowly avoided death after he was gored twice in the neck by a bull during Madrid’s annual taurine festival – and then asked the doctor if he could return to “kill the bull”. Saúl Jiménez Fortes, a matador from Malaga, had been fighting his second bull of the day when he was hoisted up on the animal’s horns and then injured. He managed to get to his feet when his fellow bullfighters arrived to distract the bull, and was carried off with his right hand pressed to his heavily bleeding neck. A combination of "luck" and immediate surgery by the in-house doctor saved his life after the incident at the capital’s Las Ventas bullring. According to the medical report, Mr Jiménez Fortes suffered two gore wounds. One was more than five inches deep, damaging the carotid artery, jugular vein, thyroid gland and the oesophagus, reaching the vertebrae; the other four inch wound was close to the parotid gland. • To the Spanish bullfighting is much more than a sport Dr Máximo García Padrós, official surgeon at Las Ventas, said that the matador had asked him to sew up the wound so that he could continue the bullfight. Bullfighter Jimenez Fortes is gored in the neck “He said ‘give me a couple of stitches and I will go out and kill the bull’,” the surgeon told the newspaper El Mundo, adding that when Mr Jiménez Fortes took off his suit and saw how seriously he was hurt, “he came down to earth”. The bull was later killed by another matador. The 25-year-old matador spent the night in intensive care and is recovering well, the surgeon said. Mr García Padrós said the bullfighter, whom he described as “lucky”, will need a neck scan to ascertain the extent of the internal damage. • Britain funding Spanish bullfighting via EU subsidies At last year’s San Isidro festival in Madrid, bullfighter David Mora was gored repeatedly after opting to receive a bull on his knees. Mr Mora is still recovering from his injuries. The last bullfighter to be killed in action at Las Ventas was the banderillero El Campeño in 1988. Source http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
  13. More than 7 million people regularly play World of Warcraft Thousands of World of Warcraft accounts have been shut down by Blizzard as it moves to stop people using "bots" to play the game Blizzard announced it had banned a "large number" of accounts in a message posted to the game's online forums. The accounts had been discovered using programs, called "bots", that automate gameplay, said Blizzard. This violated the game's terms of use and gave bot users an unfair advantage, it added. "Cheating of any form will not be tolerated," said the message. Blizzard did not reveal how many accounts had been shut down. However, a widely-shared screengrab of a conversation between a player and a customer service rep suggested that about 100,000 accounts had been closed. The ban will be in force for six months, said Blizzard. The action is likely to hit many people who play World of Warcraft simply to get in-game gold that they can later sell to other players. These players often use bots to automate the repetitive steps needed to complete quests or other actions that generate gold. However, gaming news site Kotaku said the large number of banned accounts was likely to have caught more casual players who use third-party programs to automate the work characters in the game must do to refine raw materials or produce desirable crafted items. This, it said, probably explained the short duration of the ban. In the past, Blizzard had permanently banned people it had caught using bots and other helper programs. A WoW community manager seemed to confirm this conclusion in a tweet sent hours after the bans were enforced saying "botting" involved the automation of any action, not just movement. "If a program is pressing keys for you, you've violated the ToU [terms of use]," he said. Source http://www.bbc.com/
  14. A Turkish dry cargo ship has been attacked near the Libyan port city of Tobruk, the Foreign Ministry in Ankara says. A ship officer was killed and several crew members injured. The incident took place Sunday night. The ship was first shelled from the shore as it was approaching the area, the Turkish ministry said Monday. It was then attacked twice from the air as it was trying to leave the area. The MV Tuna 1, sailing under the flag of Cook Islands, was carrying a cargo to the Libyan port from Spain and came under attack when it was in international waters, the ministry said. The man killed in the incident was the ship’s third officer. The ministry condemned the assault, but did not specify who was behind it. "We condemn strongly this contemptible attack which targeted a civilian ship in international waters and curse those who carried it out," it said. A Libyan military spokesman responded to condemnations from Ankara, saying the vessel came under attack after ignoring a warning not to approach the city of Derna, some 145 km west of Tobruk. "A ship was shelled about 10 miles from Derna coast. We have warned before about approaching Derna port," Mohamed Hejazi, a spokesman for forces with Libya's internationally recognized government, told Reuters. He confirmed one member of the crew was killed, but said that only one other sustained injuries. A military source also told Reuters the vessel caught on fire and was towed in Tobruk terminal. Screenshot from Google Maps Libya remains in turmoil after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in the popular uprising of 2011 and NATO bombing campaign. At the moment, two separate governments both claiming to be legitimate exist. The country has been riven by factional fighting and impoverished by the economic decline that followed the hostilities. It has also become a hotbed of international terrorism, with Iraq and Syria-based group Islamic State sending its fighters to Libya. Back in January, a Libyan warplane attacked a Greek-operated oil tanker anchored off the coast. The attack by forces loyal with the internationally-recognized government of Libya was motivated by factions fighting for control over Libya’s oil export. Two crewmembers of the ship were killed. While Turkey objected to the attack on its vessel, other countries are unlikely to be vocal about the incident, said Abdel Bari Atwan, editor-in-chief of the London-based news website Rai Al-Youm. “The international community is mostly supporting the government in Tobruk and they are not happy with Turkish and Qatari involvement in the Libyan conflict. I believe they will be silent,” he told . “They recognize the problem in Libya and they know they are part of that problem. They sent their warplanes and aircraft carriers to bomb Libya and changed the situation there and created a vacuum that was filled by the armed militia and the Islamists,” he said. 15. 3 dead as military jet crashes near intl airport in S. Spain A military Airbus A400M cargo plane has crashed in Seville in southern Spain. According to media reports, the jet was carrying seven people when it crashed into an irrigation canal in agricultural land near an international airport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax9ME92L_J4 Spain's Defense Ministry has confirmed the crash, but was unable to give more information on whether there were fatalities. There were "eight to 10" people on board, Spanish PM Manuel Rajoy told EL Pais newspaper, adding that they were Spanish citizens and airbus employees. “We express our deepest sympathy,” he said. “They were our fellow countrymen." According to Spanish emergency services, there were seven people aboard the crashed plane. Three of them have been killed, two injured and two more are missing. The vehicle crashed only 1.6km north of international San Pablo Airport, emergency services said. Though the crash occurred outside the perimeter of the airport, the facility is not operational, El Pais reported. Some flights are being diverted to the cities of Malaga and Jerez. The aircraft was on a test flight, local TV station ABC de Sevilla said, adding that the crew contacted air traffic controllers about a technical failure after takeoff. Numerous images on social media showed firefighters spraying the smoldering wreckage of the jet in a field. The vehicle hadn’t yet been delivered to the Spanish military and was undergoing trials, El Pais reported. Twitter users claimed that the jet crashed on or near a local Coca Cola factory, but this information hasn’t been officially confirmed. Later pictures on social media showed smoking plane wreckage in a field. The Airbus A400M Atlas is a tactical airlifter that can perform various missions, including electronic surveillance and aerial refueling. It is primarily used by the French and Turkish air forces. The A400M's maiden flight took place in December 2009 from Seville, Spain. Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK and Turkey are the jet’s primary operators. Source: http://rt.com/news
  16. Microsoft has been busy showing off the features of the upcoming DirectX 12 API, and its last big reveal is a doozy. A feature called Multiadapter will allow DirectX 12 to use multiple GPUs—more specifically, Multiadapter will allow developers to use the integrated GPUs in Intel's modern desktop processors and AMD's APUs alongside a dedicated graphics card. This could mean a nice little performance bump in DX12 games, as developers can draw on hardware that's been sitting dormant until now. Previously, for a system to utilize multiple graphics cards, those GPUs needed to be linked either via Nvidia's SLI or AMD's Crossfire technology—both of which typically required the same GPU series to be compatible. Multiadapter, on the other hand, will allow individual GPUs to be addressed separately, send unique commands, and store unique data in memory. There are a couple layers to Multiadapter: Implicit and Explicit Multiadapter. Implicit will work more or less like previous versions of DirectX, where the API handles alternate frame rendering across a pair of linked GPUs in SLI/Crossfire. AMD and Nvidia will still need to work with developers to create multi-GPU profiles for games to best take advantage of both cards. Things get more complicated with Explicit Multiadapter, which is new in DX12. Explicit Multiadapter will have two distinct API patterns: Linked GPUs and Unlinked GPUs. Linked GPUs refer to the special pairing of specific hardware, similar to what we're familiar with via SLI and Crossfire. DirectX 12 will view linked GPUs as a single GPU, allowing them to collaborate more closely and share resources in each other's rendering pipeline. Unlinked GPUs, meanwhile, will allow systems to benefit from, say, installing an Nvidia card alongside one from AMD, as was rumored a few months ago. It will also allow systems with a dedicated GPU to take advantage of onboard graphics, which is the biggest feature Microsoft is touting. Microsoft posted these slides as examples, showing a single Nvidia graphics card running a benchmark against a multiadapter setup pairing the same graphics card with the integrated Intel Core processor GPU. "We recognized that most mixed GPU systems in the world were not making the most out of the hardware they had," Microsoft's Andrew Yeung said in a blog post. "So in our quest to maximize performance, we set out to enable separable and contiguous workloads to be executed in parallel on separate GPUs. One such example of separable workloads is postprocessing. "Virtually every game out there makes use of postprocessing to make your favorite games visually impressive; but that postprocessing work doesn’t come free. By offloading some of the postprocessing work to a second GPU, the first GPU is freed up to start on the next frame before it would have otherwise been able to improving your overall framerate." As you can see in the example above, adding in the processing power of an integrated GPU doesn't make a big difference. But it does make a difference. And since virtually every desktop gaming PC has an integrated GPU in it currently going to waste, that's performance you're getting without spending an extra dime. It may be free performance for gamers, but that doesn't mean it's free for developers to implement. As PCPer points out, "Unlinked Explicit Multiadapter is also the bottom of three-tiers of developer hand-holding. You will not see any benefits at all, unless the game developer puts a lot of care in creating a load-balancing algorithm, and even more care in their QA department to make sure it works efficiently across arbitrary configurations." Likewise, DirectX12 making it possible for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards to work together doesn't guarantee either company will happily support that functionality. But the potential is promising. If you need a visual representation, just watch the DX12 demo Square Enix and Microsoft put together. Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/
  17. A man has been jailed after sparking a police station fire by setting light to a toilet roll - in order to dry his wet clothes. Marc Gibson, 34, attended a police station in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on a rainy March 11 as police investigated an attack on his girlfriend. But Bolton Crown Court heard that while popping to the toilet at the station, he set fire to a loo roll with a cigarette lighter in an attempt to dry his soaked clothes. When the fire alarm sounded, officers found Gibson locked in the disabled toilet with scorched burn marks on the wall and floor. • Drying clothes indoors could cause health risk • Children poisoned by fumes after barbecue used to dry clothes Judge Timothy Stead said: "Whatever you were trying to do in there, ordinary decent people do not set fire to toilet roll in police stations. While answering bail, you caused damage by fire in the disabled toilet. This case, it seems, is a matter of vandalism." The court was told the assault on his partner happened just before last Christmas during a conversation about Gibson's five-year-old son. Gibson had been in a relationship with the woman for about 10 months, but she had difficulties with his son as she was not the boy's mother, the court heard. The court heard Gibson shouted at her, then launched a "prolonged and sustained" assault. He left her with a bruised face and body and needing hospital attention for a suspected damaged eye socket. He hit her in the mouth, bit her nose, used a small table to hit her in the legs. He even grabbed her hair and hit her head against the wall three times. • IVF twins died in fire as mother dried clothes • Faulty washing machine 'caused £1m house fire' Gibson, of Halliwell, Bolton, admitted one count of assault and criminal damage. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay a victims' surcharge of £100. Judge Stead added: "This assault is a nasty case. Not surprisingly, she was terrified. She was frightened at the time that you would kill her, such was the nature of the attack." Source The telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk
  18. Secret app is shut down by its co-founder who admits it is not what he envisaged Anonymous messaging service Secret, at one stage thought to be valued at more than $100m (£66.5m), is shutting down. Founder David Byttow said: "Secret does not represent the vision I had when starting the company" and that he believed in "failing fast". The app was created, in part, to promote free speech but was criticised for promoting cyber-bullying. User numbers have dwindled in recent months. Secret said it would return some of its $35m funding to investors. Flash in the pan It is a big turnaround for the company that was the talk of Silicon Valley, both among investors and users of the app, just a year ago. High profile investors of Secret included actor Ashton Kutcher Founded in 2013 by two former Google employees, the company was backed by some big names including actor Ashton Kutcher, Alexis Ohanian - a founder of Reddit, and Google Ventures. The anonymous nature of messaging on the app led to its early adoption by technology sector workers, who used it to post rumours of forthcoming products or company mergers. Secret's anonymous messaging service was criticised for promoting cyber-bullying It was also used for political discussion in Russia and in Israel. But the service was criticised for allowing people to defame others while remaining anonymous. It was banned in Brazil for promoting cyber-bullying. A redesign of the app last year prompted users to "think before they post" and made it easier for users to flag up abusive content. But user numbers have been falling in recent months, with some of those remaining complaining of an increase in the number of posts of a sexual nature and that public chat had become dominated by users from Indonesia. In his blog post on Medium, Mr Byttow said: "I believe in honest, open communication and creative expression, and anonymity is a great device to achieve it. "But it's also the ultimate double-edged sword, which must be wielded with great respect and care. "I look forward to seeing what others in this space do over time." Secret is not the first app to attract millions of dollars in funding only to flop shortly afterwards. In 2012, photo and video-sharing app Color closed just 12 months after its launch having raised $41m from investors. In June that year, Napster founders, Shawn Fanning and Shaun Parker launched their video-chat site Airtime, attracting $33m in funding. It had very limited success, with Fortune magazine reporting that it had had to be quietly relaunched two years later. Source: BBC News

  20. The pair's incredible friendship makes the load seem that little bit lighter Xie Xu, standing 1.73 metres tall and weighing 75 kilos, has been voluntarily taking care of his classmate Zhang Chi since Zhang arrived at Daxu High School in Xuzhou This compassionate Chinese high school student has spent the past three years carrying his disabled friend to and from school for the past three years. Each day, 18-year-old Xie Xu, standing at just 1.73 metres tall and weighing 75 kilos, helps bring his 19-year-old friend Zhang Chi from their dorms to school nearby. Xie also helps carry his friend from class to class and often helps with tasks such as washing his clothes. The pair struck up their incredible friendship when they became students at Daxu High School, situated in the northern province of Jiangsu. The vice headmaster at the school says Xie Xu's dedication has helped inspire other students around him: "The story of the two students is so inspiring and touching. They aren't family, but [Xie] has been doing this for three years. He's the most beautiful student", he said to a local media outlet. "With their assistance, Zhang has never missed out on one single class" Zhang Chi suffers from muscular dystrophy, a genetic condition that causes the body's muscles to weaken and causes life long disability. Despite the difficulties the two face, they are both top students at the school. Unsurprisingly, social media users have shown their delight at Xie's selfless actions: "We should learn from their friendship. In today's society, Zhang's dedication is especially precious." 21. Italy says it is "at war" with migrant traffickers, and has urged the EU to take robust action to stop more people dying in the Mediterranean. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi made the comment ahead of an EU summit on Thursday to discuss the crisis. Italy's Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti told Italian TV that the EU should consider military intervention. More than 800 people drowned off Libya's coast on Sunday, bringing the number of deaths this year to 1,750. The number of people attempting to flee war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa, particularly Eritreans and Syrians, has spiked in recent months, leading to huge numbers of people drowning in unseaworthy and often overcrowded vessels. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says there have been 30 times as many deaths so far in 2015 as in the same period last year and the figure could rise to 30,000. More than 500 people rescued from several other boats were brought ashore by Italian coastguards on Wednesday. Augusta, Sicily Small children, Arab and African, stood together and grinned and waved at us from the deck of an Italian navy ship as they waited to disembark. They were a few of the more than 400 new arrivals rescued from the Calabrian coast a day ago. They had spent eight days at sea after setting sail from Egypt on a fishing boat. Others had been plucked from the sea in separate operations and were brought here for medical treatment. The migrants and asylum seekers included many from Syria and Iraq as well as Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia. Aid agencies were first to hear their stories. They told us that one heavily pregnant woman had gone into labour and been taken to hospital. Some women from Syria had fled their country's bloody civil war with their children, leaving husbands to fight and guard property. Kept back by the Italian police, we watched young men gulping down water on the portside and babies being fed bottled milk. Addressing the Italian parliament on Wednesday, Mr Renzi described the human smugglers as "the slave traders of the 21st Century". More than 500 rescued people were brought ashore to Italy on Wednesday Medics have been checking how many migrants - particularly young children - required immediate treatment A number of those rescued were barefooted and looked exhausted He said the 28-member EU must come up with concrete measures to tackle the growing problem. Separately, Italian Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti told Sky TG24 TV: "We know where the smugglers keep their boats, where they gather." "The plans for military intervention are there," she said. However, some experts dismissed such plans as unrealistic. "This problem is totally unsolvable with military means," retired French Admiral Alain Coldefy told AFP. "Politicians have on several occasions asked me the question of what could be done to stop this trafficking by force, and the response is simple: nothing. "Once these boats loaded with migrants have left Libyan waters, we can only apply international rules, which means rescuing people." 'Much more needed'On Monday, the EU set out a 10-point action plan to prevent more deaths. They include an increase in the financial resources of Frontex, the border agency which runs the EU's Mediterranean rescue service Triton, and an extension of Triton's operational area. The EU had been criticised over the scope of Triton, which replaced the larger Italian operation Mare Nostrum last year. There will also be a new campaign to destroy traffickers' boats. However, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) stressed that "much more was needed" to tackle the issue. Human rights group Amnesty international said the decision to end Mare Nostrum had "contributed to a dramatic increase in migrant and refugee deaths". Source BBC http://www.bbc.com/

  24. World Welcomes 7 Billionth Baby The world's population hit 7 billion on Monday amid celebrations and concerns about how the growing number of people will impact the earth's resources. The United Nations chose October 31 to mark the milestone. Although it is impossible to pinpoint the arrival of the world's 7 billionth baby, the Philippines was the first country to publicly declare the symbolic feat. Danica May Camacho was delivered just before midnight Sunday in a Manila hospital. Celebrations were also held in India, which could soon overtake China as the world's most populous nation. While the population's 7 billion milestone is seen as a sign of increased longevity and improved birth survival rates, experts also warn of the growing population's struggle for resources, including food and water. Officials with the U.N. Population Fund say many low-income countries of sub-Saharan Africa and some in Asia have seen a growth in population that is outpacing economic growth rates. Fertility rates in many European nations and Japan have dropped below the replacement rate, causing concern that shortages of labor and productivity could threaten the quality of life. Danica Camacho is cuddled by her mother as they are wheeled out of the delivery room of the Government's Fabella Hospital moments after she was born October 31, 2011 in the Philippines. According to the latest U.N. figures, the world’s population is projected to surge past 9 billion before 2050 and reach 10.1 billion by the end of the century if current fertility rates continue at expected levels. China's population of 1.34 billion is currently the world's highest. India comes in second, with 1.2 billion. Asia's population of 4.2 billion makes it the world's most populous region. Africa's population is expected to triple to 3.6 billion people by the start of the next century. Source DJ
