At least 20 stories of a 5-star Dubai hotel became engulfed in flames as the city was preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with 16 people receiving injuries. Firefighters are currently battling the fire at the 302-meter tall Address Downtown Dubai. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which covered at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper. Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene. Eyewitnesses told Sky News that firefighters’ access is complicated by structure and crowds. Civil defense representative said that all residents have been evacuated, and people are being moved out of the Dubai Mall located nearby. The fire engulfed the hotel from the outside and did not spread inside, according to Dubai’s media office. Officials said that the firefighters have sustained most of the fire, however have not yet extinguished it completely. As the building just caught fire, panic was reported in the area around the hotel and social media users posted videos of people running away from the scene in crowds. The Address Downtown and residential compound has nearly 200 rooms and over 600 apartments. The hotel is situated about 2km from Burj Khalifa, one of the sites of New Year’s festivities. Officials say they plan to go ahead with the festivities, which include three displays beginning at the Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper is decorated with 400,000 LED lights, while the fireworks display will feature 1.6 tons of pyrotechnics. In February, a massive fire broke out in the Marina Torch, a residential skyscraper at the Dubai Marina. The residents were evacuated and no fatalities were reported in that incident. It's one thing having to deal with the devastation of a house fire, it's another when it comes complete with a full-on fireworks display. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta9akZHtqKM When a home caught on fire in the town of Wezep in The Netherlands, the flames made their way to the house's attic where there just so happened to be an inordinate amount of fireworks stored. Dazzling but dangerous fireworks display is set off during the house fire (Jukin) The result was recorded on camera from the street, which shows a massive firework display at work as firefighters attempt to tackle the blaze. It is not believed that the streamer or anyone else was harmed in the footage , with one poster describing the incident in several replies as 'minor'. "When the fire first starts the voice reads out a message saying "Ushiro! Ushiro!" (Behind! Behind!), so one of his viewers was trying to warn him of the burning bag behind him. A sheepish driver has apologised to a petrol station after he sparked a large blaze when trying to kill a spider with his lighter as he filled up. The motorist can be heard on surveillance video at the garage in suburban Detroit looking at the car and asking: "Is that a spider in there?" Flames are then seen erupting along the car's side, the pump and the pavement as the man darts to safety. Petrol station attendant Susan Adams hit the stop button on the pump and called firefighters, but the man had used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames by the time they arrived. He escaped injury and his vehicle suffered little damage, but the petrol pump was destroyed. Ms Adams said the man returned to say sorry the next day.
