I've seen topics about what people's first online game was... but never anything about MMOs oddly enough. Let's change that. ^_^
So, to all of the adventurers, elves, mages, orcs, and wizards out there... what was the first MMORPG that you played? How did it affect you? Do you still play it?

My answer is probably going to be one of the more boring/typical ones... The first MMO I played was Runescape. It was still pretty new and at the time, my family didn't have internet access so I was limited to going to the library or playing at school. I couldn't play any games online except for what would run in a browser (Netscape woo! :yahoo).
I discovered it by walking past some computers and seeing this 20-something guy who smelled like he drank for a living playing a (what I thought at the time) impossibly immersive game. And it started from there.

I'd say it completely changed what I looked for in games and believe it or not, helped me interact with people (I've always been shy). A few years later, when my classmates were playing club penguin and trying to talk about sex while avoiding the autoban censor, I was busy slaying my way through dungeons and running quests. Told a few friends about what I played, and ended up eventually converting the entire class into Runescape players.

I don't play it anymore (hell, I don't know whether I can even access my old account- it was on a msn email), but it started my foray into online gaming and I met some great people on there. And I can honestly say that without playing Runescape, It's possible I never would've really "gotten" into roleplaying games much at all. Damn, would I have missed out.

Nowadays I play more modern and immersive Korean MMOs. Primarily Black Desert Online and infrequently (though I used to play all the time) TERA. I find it's a great way to get away from a stressful day, find adventures when I can't afford many travels, and meet wonderful people like you folks.

Feel free to post your adventures and ask questions about mine. I hope to hear about your travels and turn this into an epic thread of many tales with your help!

Cheers, and may you drink many pints of ale over a warm fire.

An unrelated basic game timeline that lead me to FA:

Civ II -> AOE -> Starcraft -> Runescape -> Maplestory -> Halo -> Tremulous -> ET -> Urban Terror -> FA ET servers. Yes, MMORPGs helped me discover online FPS games :)

My games have had a lot of overlap.

I began with Red Alert II

I was then introduced to Enemy Territory

Next up, Tibia (RPG)

After Tibia came Luminary: Rise of the GoonZu (sort of combined with Enemy Territory)

Then, I became a top player in GunZ: The Duel (terrible game, now that I look back, haha)

Then, I played Neverwinter

After this, I played tibia for a year again. More so to maintain contact with some people than for the game.

For a brief moment, I tried GunZ: The Duel private servers. Not my thing, private servers seldom are.

After this, Path of Exile. These days I alternate between Path of Exile and Enemy Territory

Interestingly, I only ever played RPG's to become rich. I like making money in games like that. Even now, I still log in to tibia 2 hours a week just to abuse its weak market system.

/edit Ah, I forgot to fit Dragon Knight: Online in there somewhere, but I don't remember where. Was just a few months anyway. I think it was just before Neverwinter.

Sims

Rollercoaster Tycoon

Zoo Tycoon

Runescape

i mainly played FPS games then but i think my  first for a MMO/RPG was Guild wars

Interesting question, prolly if i remember correctly my first FPS game was COD2 and was absolutely enjoying it for quite some time, even now after all those years i find it the closest to ET from all FPS games. Then it was various of racing games, from Need for Speed Underground 2 (best one in my opinion), hot pursuit and Colin McRae Rally, towards Champions/football manager and various of FIFA versions.

As for MMORG, my first one would be Guild wars, which i didn't play a lot, the one that took majority of my time away, was Battle of the Immortals, which was one of the best graphic/PVP and PVE games i ever played, enjoyed it thro out years and never got bored of it since it always had some new updates and scenarios long enough to keep u interested for quite some time. It was probably only game that made me stop playing ET or at least limit it to one war per month or two.

Runescape for me too - every few years I still log in and realise too much has changed to understand wtf is going on and it's not worth the investment of time to learn all the new stuff lol

Edit : although I admit I now want to login just for the nostalgia.. maybe sell my Santa hat for a small fortune
