RendeL Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Ok so I have been having these ping spikes on server and finaly I took some time and started to study and find out if my gear could be the issue after all. It was... My ping went from normal 98 to 250, usually while gaming it hopped beetween 105 to 190, causing some annoying lag spikes. And I am not talking about constant lag, just occasional freezing/hopping. I have not tried to restore the factory settings yet, but I doubt it makes no difference, but I just have to buy new router. Maybe you who have similar issues and have separate modem and router, you should try if the router is the issue. Below you see before and after winmtr results when I removed the router and use just the modem Before |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|| WinMTR statistics || Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last ||------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|| 192.168.1.1 - 0 | 100 | 100 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 || 192.168.0.254 - 71 | 27 | 8 | 2 | 3 | 8 | 2 || host-77.223.32.1.laajakaista.ipy.fi - 71 | 27 | 8 | 26 | 27 | 34 | 27 || host-77.223.56.150.laajakaista.ipy.fi - 71 | 27 | 8 | 26 | 27 | 35 | 26 || 62.145.191.204 - 71 | 27 | 8 | 25 | 28 | 37 | 25 || ge0-0-0-101.bbr1.hel2.fi.eunetip.net - 74 | 26 | 7 | 37 | 40 | 55 | 41 || 213.192.186.58 - 74 | 26 | 7 | 65 | 66 | 67 | 67 || decix-gw.hetzner.de - 74 | 26 | 7 | 68 | 69 | 73 | 70 || core22.hetzner.de - 74 | 26 | 7 | 67 | 72 | 74 | 74 || core24.hetzner.de - 74 | 26 | 7 | 70 | 75 | 78 | 78 || ex9k2.rz19.hetzner.de - 74 | 26 | 7 | 68 | 74 | 76 | 76 || fearless-assassins.com - 74 | 26 | 7 | 67 | 75 | 78 | 77 ||________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| After |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|| WinMTR statistics || Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last ||------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|| 192.168.0.254 - 0 | 110 | 110 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 || host-77.223.32.1.laajakaista.ipy.fi - 0 | 110 | 110 | 23 | 24 | 35 | 24 || host-77.223.56.150.laajakaista.ipy.fi - 0 | 110 | 110 | 24 | 27 | 33 | 27 || 62.145.191.204 - 0 | 110 | 110 | 24 | 27 | 71 | 26 || ge0-0-0-101.bbr1.hel2.fi.eunetip.net - 0 | 110 | 110 | 31 | 34 | 44 | 35 || 213.192.186.58 - 0 | 110 | 110 | 61 | 64 | 82 | 63 || decix-gw.hetzner.de - 0 | 110 | 110 | 61 | 63 | 72 | 63 || core22.hetzner.de - 0 | 110 | 110 | 65 | 68 | 84 | 66 || core24.hetzner.de - 0 | 110 | 110 | 66 | 70 | 85 | 66 || ex9k2.rz19.hetzner.de - 0 | 110 | 110 | 67 | 70 | 90 | 67 || fearless-assassins.com - 0 | 110 | 110 | 65 | 66 | 74 | 67 ||________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| 4 Quote
-=HipKat=- Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Mine drops speed from 96 to like 22 once in awhile and a reboot fixes. Quote
RendeL Posted May 14, 2016 Author Posted May 14, 2016 I tried the usual, reboot, update, reinstall et etc. Nothing helped apart from removing the router off. Quote
Leader RedBaird Posted May 14, 2016 Leader Posted May 14, 2016 Come to think of it, I did the same thing a few years ago, on a different system. I took the router out of the signal path just as a test and never put it back on. Maybe I should get it out and mess with it again, just to satisfy my curiosity. 1 Quote
Vanaraud Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Had the similar case a year or two back, only my modem dropped a lot of packets. Switched it out and no problems since... 1 Quote
Raskin Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 ..if you got xfinity Comcast router that is theirs like me ....I found out years ago I just make calls to them about problem..just to get logged in have issue..they keep info file..then just take router to the comast store in town and walk up with account number and router in hand and say that you called service and did all things.. reset..they also sent reset while I on phone with them and still no internet.. they will defuse situation and just walk away and give you a "new"? one rather than hear your grief..i've done this many times over the years..just a hint to gasp!D: xfinity customers 1 Quote
RendeL Posted May 15, 2016 Author Posted May 15, 2016 I have the shitgear...I mean Netgear router Just for the case like this I bought modem (telewell 30€) and router (netgear 25€) separately, tho I never thought these things would actually broke. Gonna buy Asus router next for 30€. Quote
Dmitriy Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Try to run winmtr to your provider isp dns ip . Better to do it with Pingplotter (select time 1ms) Have you tried without router ? Not recommend asus, you paying for brand. I had some problems with asus routers. Just pm me or write here where you will buy it and i can help you choose Quote
RendeL Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 I played without router and as you can see the winmtr results, the router was the issue. However I have not yet bought new router, because the old still "works". I just use now cable from modem to pc and router ports remains empty, still can use it's wifi if needed. Wife has fast cellular line and she has it on pad and on phones. I use wifi sometimes with the laptop, but it is rare. Quote
Xernicus Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 What brand is your modem router? Curious because I have had two fail on me. Both were the same model, ZyXel PK5001Z.New one seems to be going strong, ZyXel C1100Z. It trains a faster speed as well. Ping is down (to Jay3) from 250ms to 190ish. Maybe I should play again now that I fixed my 6+ month lag... Quote
Xernicus Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 I have Netgear router. Oh duhh. If I would've been able to read everything (more like anything at all ), I would've seen you already said that. (Sorry I am awaiting new glasses) Interesting, as I've never seen a Netgear product fail. Just about every other brand... yes. Especially TP-Link products. Never have I had so much sh!t. Asus routers are a PITA as well, but (afaik) past late 2015, their firmware has been decent. Thought there was HW problems with said Asus products, but update fixed them. Belkin... good lord I hope I never have to deal with another. 1 Quote
RendeL Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 I believe my router (also modem) is so old already and there has not been any firmware updates in years available... it just needs to retire Quote
