Coincidence that it happened on a road known to be dangerous to bikers due to the fact that people drive over the speeding limit and that the bike lane ends and the shoulder narrows considerably?

A section of road that people have complained about before?

Couple of relevant exerpts from a local portland Article:

We’ve written about this dangerous section of Lombard twice in the past. On Friday, just one day before this tragedy, we highlighted it as a “scary pinch-point”. We also featured it in 2013 in a story about how poorly we treat bike lanes under overpasses compared to the Dutch.

Last night KGW (our local NBC TV affiliate) aired a piece about the crash. They included comments from myself and from ODOT spokesman Don Hamilton. Hamilton said, “This is a reminder that we all have to look out for each other on the roads,” Hamilton said. When asked about the possibility of a road diet to make a safer bikeway, he told KGW’s Maggie Vespa, “That depends on the numbers, that depends on what the traffic engineers say about the amount of volume we have in the area, the amount of bicycles we have in that area.”

“I live near here and depend on my bike to get around. It’s impossible to find a safe route North or East of my neighborhood. I’ve spent so much time scouring online and paper maps trying to figure out how to get to 122nd, for example, and there are a depressing amount of ‘difficult connections’. To get to I205 Multi-Use Path I have to decide between Lombard and it’s barely-handlebar-width lanes next to 45mph traffic or a street devoid of bike lanes, with one lane each direction and cars impatiently whipping around me.

I am a confident rider yet I never ride on Lombard, the traffic is too close and too fast. In particular the disappearing-reappearing bike lanes, and the dicey way you’re supposed to cross over a lane of traffic merging onto I205 South when heading eastbound. Columbia is much, much worse.

This shouldn’t happen. It’s time for the city to focus on improving conditions such as these in underserved neighborhoods like mine. We’ll never realize Vision Zero until there are safer routes that serve and connect the whole city.”

Drunk driving fatalities in Oregon:  105 (33% of total road fatalities) http://www.madd.org/drunk-driving/state-stats/Oregon.html

Overall number of fatalities related to automobiles in 2015: 403, from http://www.oregon.gov/odot/ts/Pages/index.aspx

fatalities caused by driving while high: 1 under the loosest possible interpretation

I'm not in favor of legalization either, but using faulty arguments and making non-existent connections only weakens the case against legalization.

I love starting these things.  The forums were getting dull since I left.  But hey!  I'll be back.

This is like blaming games for the school shootings or something, "he liked to play GTA" so we'll blame that and not the fact that the guy is sick in the head

Hey my governor hasn't banned 72 ounce big gulps yet. So I filled it with mountain dew kick start, and drank it all in 30 minutes. Now I have obesity and bad chest pains, but thats my governors fault for not banning those 72 ounce big gulps yet :P

I don't understand how a country (or state for you in US) can legalize drugs...as for sure marijuana is a drug. <_<

I know it's "relaxing" but you become quickly addict.

And alcohol, cigaretes and the rest of shit isnt???

Cmon stop being so blind, cigs and alco are 10 times worse than weed will ever be, so lets not go into this, as to which drug is bad for human, i have seen numerious of researches from scientists proving that weed has some positive effects towards human body, while i am yet to see any of that for either cigs or alcohol, where i wont even start comparing how many people die cus of driving drunk and how many cancers were there cus of cigs...

I'm not against legalising drugs, however you should link the research you are talking about, if you are going to use it as an arguement.

Also, there have been studies on alcohol which show it also has positive effects. (for example).

Just like alcohol, marijuana has some negative and positive effects. "As with any material that is smoked, chronic smoking of marijuana will produce bronchitis;" (link)

Alco and cigs are completely legal nearly everywhere as of weed, they try to make it look like the biggest baddest drug out there, while it should be right opposite and u have all of the laying on google, takes 5 min to find researches proving this.

Your sources are mainly websites saying, "facts about...". Where are the citations to studies?

Secondly, if you are arguing a point, then you should do the work to prove it. You can't say something, and expect the other person to do the work for you.

I said nothing about cigarettes...and like I said before, I am not against legalizing marijuana.

Each link has its own link towards reseaches, doesnt take a genious to find that out lol.

I dont really need to prove anything if there's all wide open for everyone to see lol, i can say whatever i want, and i could not care less if that other person takes time to research or not, reality is there, its up to them to read it or keep ignoring it, simple as.

We know and agree that alc and cig are drugs as you can become addict to this too

But as there is already too many death because of it, the question is :

Why legalize another one ? :(

Weed really isn't as bad as some people think, have you ever done it? do you know someone that has died because of it?

It's a plant, not something made by people.. since many people see it as the stepping stone to the harder drugs they judge it way harder than it should be
I love smoking it, but then again I am not addicted to it and never will be, (can't smoke at home because my parents are totally NO drugs, (however alcohol is soo much worse)) and ofcourse some people get addicted easier but I just think it's between your ears

Don't feel like arguing over this anyway, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion but if you never tried it yourself I find you can not judge since you don't know what it does to you, smoking in general is bad for your lungs so I also don't suggest you try it.. but don't judge without knowing

My 2 cents and that will the last reply of me here :)
