Quite complex to explain so I'll use the urls to try to make sense on how Invision Community developed this...
If you go to forums:
https://fearless-assassins.com/forums/

You'll se the sections with some forums. But you can click on the section too or as you said the "Board".

Or you could click on a forum like announcement news: (Your header)
https://fearless-assassins.com/forums/forum/228-announcements-news/

Or even on a "subforum" like site announcements inside of announcement news. (You said category)

But not all forums have this structure:
Footpage>Forum>Board>Header>Category
For example, our suggestions forum:

So, "technically" a section doesn't exist, it's a forum of forums, and each forum inside this "section" can have multiple forums, or as we say, "subforums." You can have a forum inside a forum and go on... until you break the site at some point lol. Or you could just go directly to topics, like the suggestions forum.
So you can name it whatever you want, but for the website, there are different forums with forums or topics inside. And all that reminds me this meme

But hey! just as you, I'm overthinking this XD

i mean,

It seems as if the definition of what a forum is has evolved over time to overcome a multitude of meanings.

The terminology of yesterdays has apparently been abandoned, and what remains is a broad generalization of what is obvious...

which I myself still consider to be conceptually incorrect, as that is not my standard.

However, I don't see much point in contradicting this, as language is alive and constantly evolving.

Not keeping up with the times would be like claiming today that the earth is round...

that is true, but it used to be false. Although secretly everyone knows that the earth is flat,

under the right circumstances of course,

one has to just compress it really hard.

like a waffle you put into the waffleiron and it pops out on the sides...

however, i think i got my answer, but at more importantly,

everyone participating in this absurdity of mine had fun.

The terminology of yesterdays was already the broad generalization of what was obvious yesterday.

Tradition is merely what relates us to our live and recent passed ancestors, and even that eventually changes over time.
