Zicx01 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 (edited) As some of you may know, just recently got a EVGA RTX 3070, as well as im running ET in 1440p now, my game was running pretty good up until recently, i have my fps capped at 250 but I am experiencing frame drops down to 120 and below, on certain maps, whenever there is alot of explosions, action going on, etc, I was wondering if anyone knew of any fixes that could help, feel like I should be getting 250 stable constantly, myself and @nAbish have been thinking on maybe its just an old game that isnt pairing well with new hardware, but it would be great to know if Im missing anything here, we've done some research on past posts on the forums, did everything suggested and im still experiencing issues, if anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated <3 Edited September 9, 2023 by Zicx01 1 Quote
Inactive Member rMks Posted September 9, 2023 Inactive Member Posted September 9, 2023 (edited) it's not uncommon to encounter performance issues in older games when using newer hardware. Here are some steps you can take to potentially improve your frame rate and address frame drops: Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics card drivers are up to date. Visit the official NVIDIA website to download and install the latest drivers for your RTX 3070. Compatibility Mode: Right-click on the Enemy Territory executable file and go to Properties. Under the Compatibility tab, you can try running the game in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows (e.g., Windows XP or Windows 7). Sometimes, this can help with compatibility issues. Reducing Graphics Settings: Lower some in-game graphics settings, such as texture quality, shadows, and such. While your hardware is capable of handling more, older games might not be optimized for it.(I have similiar card like you but AMD - and I have stable 250 fps tho I dont think this will fix it but you can try.) Console Commands: In the game's console, you can experiment with some commands to optimize performance. For example, try using the /com_maxfps command to set a specific maximum frame rate. You can also adjust other settings like /r_primitives, /r_subdivisions, or /r_picmip to reduce graphical complexity. Resolution Scaling: You could try scaling down the resolution to 1080p or lower temporarily to see if that resolves the frame rate drops. This will help determine if it's a hardware compatibility issue. Overclocking: If you're comfortable with it, consider overclocking your GPU to get more performance. However, be cautious and make sure to follow safe overclocking practices to avoid damaging your hardware.(I guess this is useless for ET since it more likely CPU game) Community Patches: Check if there are any community patches or updates for ET Legacy that might address compatibility issues with newer hardware. Monitor Background Applications: Ensure that no background applications are consuming significant system resources while you're playing. Close unnecessary applications running in the background. Clean Dust and Optimize Cooling: Overheating can lead to performance drops. Make sure your GPU is not overheating by cleaning out any dust from your PC and optimizing its cooling system.(we all saw you have some dust here 😄 ) Monitor Hardware Usage: Use monitoring software like MSI Afterburner or HWMonitor to check CPU and GPU usage while playing. This can help identify if any specific component is bottlenecking performance. Check for Game Updates: Ensure that you have the latest patches and updates for Legacy. Sometimes, game updates can address performance issues. Community Forums: Consider visiting the official Legacy forum or discord. Other players may have encountered similar issues and found solutions specific to the game. Remember to back up any important game files or configurations before making significant changes. Additionally, performance may vary from map to map, so it's normal to experience fluctuations in frame rate, especially during intense in-game action. If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, it might indeed be a compatibility issue between the game's engine and newer hardware, in which case you may have limited options for further optimization. In the end I would say from my side that I think its problem with settings in your game or graphic card. Keep digging - I am sure we will find out soon or later GL Edited September 9, 2023 by rMks Quote
oliveirapt Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 (edited) i thonk nvidia recently have that problem i was using 140 but was very unstabel making drop a lot fps120 others 75 on explosions or a area with a lot players specialy bots i reduce it my fps to 115 it get me a more stabel fps try to reduce a bit more see if help to Edited September 9, 2023 by oliveirapt Quote
Gengis Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Is this very useful to have 250 FPS ? I use 125 FPS that seems quite enough with an old game like ET. If you are using ET 2.60b : try every values r_primitives. If you are using ETL, r_primitives doesnt exist but it supports new hardware. Your thread optimisation is set to off ? Gengis Quote
SlitfaceJR Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Fyi, Wolf ET uses Quake 3/ id tech 3 engine I'm sure that if you search for something like "Quake 3 fix for RTX cards" you'll find something useful. That pretty sure it's related to the engine I would like to help a bit more but im not at home right now, we can speak about it later on 1 Quote

Gengis Threaded optimization is off, yet the same result, and I am using ETL, r_primitives does work for me, established this last night with @Element', I believe its because I added it in my config, but I set it to 0 as almost every guide suggests on the forums, not super useful to use 250 fps, I could try knocking it down and see if that helps any Edited September 9, 2023 by Zicx01 2 Quote

I have all the other things checked on this list such as graphics drivers, my card is overclocked, only thing I havent tried is turning down my graphics settings, and compatibility mode, which I could try out and see if its any help, I did notice its only on certain maps as well, and only when my GPU has to load alot, but I dont have this issue with any other game 1 Quote
Solution Gengis Posted September 9, 2023 Solution Posted September 9, 2023 (edited) R_primitives has been removed in ETL. The developers said it was unused. Go with 125 FPS and see what happens. Gengis Edited September 9, 2023 by Gengis 1 Quote

Glad its semi "fixed" for you ! Cya around 1 Quote
Tukkonen Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 I've heard something that stable 125 fps hits the magic spot, higher jumps, faster movement etc. For example been testing on italy map one jump, i can make it with 125 fps, but not with lower. Haven't tested it with higher fps's 😄 1 Quote
Zicx01 Posted September 10, 2023 Author Posted September 10, 2023 Yeah heard that as well, seems to be a really great sweet spot, doesnt feel as smooth as 250, I might try setting it to 170 since thats my monitors refresh rate, see if I can even get that and hopefully get a smoother experience 1 Quote

You could jump higher with 125 fps. NOW all FA servers (don't know about other servers) are using g_fixedPhysicsFPS 125. So now you jump the same height no matter your actual fps. The video was recorded few years back in BEG2. Right now I recommend using the highest stable FPS you PC and Internet connection can handle. If you have trouble getting stable 200 FPS with modern gaming PC then there are few things you can try. Do /gfxinfo in ETlegacy console, make sure you are using correct dedicated GPU for ET. 15 hours ago, Zicx01 said: r_primitives does work for me Like sayd before r_primitives commands does not exist in ETLegacy. If you claim that you are getting better results with that, then my question to you is how do you measure it? Do you run timedemo? Send me your cfg, let me see if there is smth wrong there. 3 1 Quote

Tried yesterday at beg2 and it was still the case (or i did something wrong). Will record this next time i'll play 😄 Quote
