So I was told to take a WinMTR test due to lag excessive lag on the silent server. I took it, and here are my results. Hope somebody can help reduce the ingame lag...

Oftentimes residential gateways will cause MTR reports to look a little misleading.

Do not be alarmed by the 100% loss reported. This does not indicate that there is a problem. You can see that there is no loss on subsequent hops.

Judging by your network traffic alone, you aren't getting lag from that.

What are the specs for your PC?

What framerate are you running the game at?

Can you take a screenshot of the "lag" you experience in the game? Hopefully you've got the Lagometer turned on.

Try running WinMTR for 100, 250, and 500 packets.

Also do the same while you're playing the game.

I'll do my specs up tomorrow - as well as my ingame rates etc.

Also do you use xfire in-game? For me it gives some little lag spikes when using Xfire in-game.

Yes I use xfire ingame. I've used it for years though, its never caused me lag.

But as far as my PC specs, here they are:

Processor:  Intel® Core(TM2) CPU    6600 @ 2.40Ghz / 2.39 GHz

3GB of ram right now, but I plan on getting at least 4 or 5, as well as a new graphics card.

1 TB of storage

Graphics Card: Radeon x700 (ATI) @1501 MB

PC is capable enough to play ET. But might not work good if you run back ground process while playing ET.

Post your lagometer screenshots. You network seems good at most of the part.

Alright, I've gathered a few screenshots from a few different maps. Also - my FPS is weird. Some maps, it caps at 70ish. Others, like baserace, it was at about 30-50ish.

FPS is PC dependent. Check your GPU drivers. With right drivers you can get 100+ FPS and with wrong 30-40 FPS.

Either your CPU is getting throttled or your HD is active while you are playing game. - That's what you lagometer tells me. Some places green lagometer is completely high = back ground process.

Please post a screenshot of or provide the following: speed testping test, your normal latency on the Silent 1 server, and the connection speed you are paying for in Mbps.

The lagometer strictly shows network related information. The top line displays how often frames are rendered and whether the client waits before drawing frames. The bottom line shows snaps received from the server and their latency to the client. Connecting to a server with minimal cvar restrictions (e.g. Jaymod) with com_maxFPS at a value of 20 will show that they move at the same rate. A more complete description can be found here.

Common causes of green spikes on the bottom line*:

  1. Inconsistent latency: Other people on the connection, applications updating or streaming, wireless.
  2. A capped frame rate (com_maxFPS) that is not consistent - without drops greater than 1 - 2 FPS. **
  3. A modem or router that has stopped working properly.

Please download the latest driver for your video card from AMD here. After the installation restart your machine, right click the desktop, and open the AMD Catalyst Control Center. If this option is not available you can download the generic driver on the right side of the page. If these do not install for whatever reason, simply download a previous driver version to install the AMD Catalyst Control Center.

Optimizing the AMD Catalyst Control Center settings:

  1. Right click the desktop and select the AMD Catalyst Control Center.
  2. Under the "Gaming" tab select 3D Application Settings.
  3. Click the Add button and select "et.exe"
  4. Select the newly made profile and change the following settings.
Anti-Aliasing:
Anti-Aliasing Mode: Use application settings
Anti-Aliasing Samples: Use application settings
Filter: Standard
Anti-Aliasing Method: Multisampling
Morphological Filtering: Off

Texture Filtering:
Anisotropic Filtering Mode: Use application settings
Anisotropic Filtering Level: Use application settings
Texture Filtering Quality: Performance
Surface Format Optimization: On

Frame Rate Control:
Wait for Vertical Refresh: Always off
OpenGL Triple Buffering: Off

Tessellation:
Tessellation Mode: AMD optimized (Try Use application settings?)
Maximum Tessellation Level: AMD optimized (Try Use application settings?)
Save the changes and restart your computer.

Optimizing client resources:

Shortcut method

  1. Navigate to your Wolfenstein Enemy Territory folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory) and create a shortcut: Right Click > Send to > Desktop (create chortcut). If there is already a shortcut on your desktop proceed to the next step.
  2. Right click the shortcut and select Properties. Select the Shortcut tab and append the following commands to the target path: +set com_hunkMegs "192" +set com_soundMegs "64" +set com_zoneMegs "24" ***
  3. The full target path should look like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\et.exe" +set com_hunkMegs "192" +set com_soundMegs "64" +set com_zoneMegs "24"

Xfire method

  1. Open Xfire: Settings > Game Library > Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory > Extra Command Line Parameters: "+set com_hunkMegs 192 +set com_soundMegs 64 +set com_zoneMegs 24" ***

Affinity and priority

  1. Open ET then minimize or alt + enter.
  2. Press the Windows key and search for taskmgr
  3. Right click and Run as administrator.
  4. Under the Processes tab find "et.exe"
  5. Right click > Set Affinity... > Leave only CPU 0 checked.
  6. Right click > Set Priority > Above Normal.

Razer Cortex

This has a game booster that helps older machines more but may still be of some use to you.

Defrag

  1. Press the Windows key and search for Disk Defragmenter  ****

Miscellaneous:

A more technical solution for when driver updates break the game can be found here.

I hope that this helps. Good luck and happy fragging.

* Due to the game engine rounding FPS values up the lagometer will never be completely smooth 100% of the time since the value will not be divisible by the 20 snaps received from the server.

** The game engine automatically changes cl_maxpackets with FPS drops. This causes network overhead, improper bullet registry, delayed information to/from the server, and sometimes warping.

*** These settings are far more than ET will actually use. com_zoneMegs is forced to 24 MB by the game engine.

**** Do not use this if you have a SSD. Windows has native trim support that does this automatically.
