everything i do goes VERY slow. not only internet, but also opening documents (who were already downloaded), a 2 pages word file.. everything goes very slow

might this be a virus? no idea what causes this :s

E: it probably is a virus: when i dont put my internet cable in everything runes fine, document of 17mb opened in a milisecond

so this guy before me did some bad things with internet :(

i have microsoft essential antivirus, probably not good enough to see the virus, might install norton next week

You can check from Start Manager(ctrl+alt+del) which processes take CPU power. And you can check from google if the processes are legitimate.

If you moved to new location try to make new connection to internet, there could be something conflicting from old settings. I´d imagine ddos in campus is more unlikely than virus though.

In case if its virus its better to install antivir from CD rather than from internet and run diagnostics first then start to DL updates as some viruses can block updates.

Also the usual: have you checked temps, if HDD analysed for defragmentation, cleaned registers etc?

MsMpEng.exe is just eating my processor

"Antimalware Service Executable"

now im googleing

E: hm this probably is just cuz im scanning my pc on viruses now

E:

did this:

I've at least two laptops, after installing Microsoft Security Essentials, the CPU usage jumps up. Stopping or uninstalling it resolved the problem, which isolated the source to be Microsoft Security Essentials itself. After some research, this works for me as a workaround this problem.

  1. Run Task Manager, find the process with high CPU usage. (Sorting by CPU may help you find it)
  2. Likely you will find "MsMpEng.exe" has taken much of your CPU time
  3. Now go to  your Microsoft Security Essentials, click on the "Settings" tab. Select "Excluded files and locations"
  4. Browse to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MsMpEng.exe", Ok and press Add button to add the file to your list of excluded files and locations. Press Save changes button.

now also my audio doesnt work anymore, great

What Joedirt said, malwarebytes is a great program to use. Sorry, didn't see your reply.

The antivirus I would suggest getting also is ESET Smart Security (it does cost money) or Avast if you want a free one.
