metal_scum Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 i need a good anti-virus/anti-spyware but i aint got enough money to buy one, so ill have to rely on the free choices lurking around the internet. Does anyone recommend a good one? i tried AVG. seems good enough any other programs please post thanks in advance Quote
TulsaGeoff Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I used AVG for years until I tried Avast. Avast allows for multiple levels of scanning. On its highest level its going to take hours to scan (which is a good thing). http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html For removing spyware, I recommond. Spybot - Search and Destroy. I wouldn't recommend the registry protector and realtime protection. Use it to scan and remove files though. http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html Quote
Administrators daredevil Posted July 20, 2009 Administrators Posted July 20, 2009 Everyone has their own choices from their past experience. I use this ones. I only run Avast in the background but when I scan, I use all 3......Been clean after 1k+ Songs from Limewire Quote
Desu Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 i used avg. sucked badly, Avast was good, i just didnt like the scanning screen, which reminded highly of bluescreen of death. Kaspersky is the one i use right now. i got it from wal-mart after usign 30 day trial, and it is really the best there is. but if you want to go free, avast is the best one out there, it beats even some of the non-free ones. ModelRocket555 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 well, as has been said already, when it comes to anti-virus software, there is no clear "best" and so it really becomes more of a question of which one do you prefer. Avast, AVG, and Avira are all good free anti-viruses. If you only need on-demand scanning (does not automatically scan) then Clamwin is also a good option. Personally, I would recommend that you stay away from McAfee, Norton, and Kaspersky because some of the more recent malware can now disable them. Personally, I prefer Blink from eEye Digital Security, which has a 1 year free trial (no credit card, etc. required) and after that you have to either buy it or reinstall it, as you would with many of the other anti-virus's. metal_scum Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 ive never considering installing kaspersky or norton even if they were free coz many things are said about them on the net.... thx for the help Quote
-=Medic=- Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I installed all kind of anti virus to test which is fast and light running and don't charge system with useless services running on back well from 7 anti virus selected 2 : Kaspersky and NOD32 (ESET) but both anti virus not full Security thing with firewall, Sorry it's not free anti virus but they do the job Now i'm running NOD32 64bits v4 with vista SP2 64bits ... playing all kind of game without any error also cod4 running smooth ^^ also about vista ... always run game or punkbuster with admin rights to avoid any restriction in windows Quote
metal_scum Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 actually nod32 is my favorite antivirus. I tried a trial version of it. Gonna buy it when i have money... when you're 16 its hard to get money. My parents think this is useless. And well they spent a lot of money buying me a good new pc so i dont wanna charge them with more fees... Quote

Use it to scan and remove files though. http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html Been using the same combo for years... make sure you don't get Spybot, which is actually spyware. Get Spybot - Search and Destroy. AVG is heavy and doesn't have the definitions Avast has. Kaspersky would be the only other AV I would consider using. I actually can go without antivirus software and be just fine. Half of the time I forget to re-enable it after gaming. Being conscious of what is going on on your computer is the best anti-virus. I've had one crippling virus the entire time I've had a computer on the internet (going on about 10 years now), and it was an accident... I ran a program I actually knew was a virus by mistake. Didn't lose any data though. Spyware is a little trickier. If you even think about looking for porn you'll get some, and I like my porn. Quote
Loki Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 I have been using AVG free and Spybot S&D for 2 years with no problems. I am also a firm believer that knowing what is going on with your computer is better that any antivirus out there. in the last few years the only virus I have seen near my computer was on a hard drive I was running a diagnostic on from another machine. Beckoning Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Windows live care 1 it works, but the only downfall is the tune up it does every 4 weeks which totally freezes your computer for hours on end, i always just delay it, so i haven't really had a tune up all year. Quote
PHANTASM Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I live with a swarm of humans. This is what I use to fight the constant computer infections: Norton Systemworks 2003 (I know it's a RAM hog, but it finds stuff McAffee can't find, and I actually paid for it so I keep using it forever. I reinstall it whenever it expires.) Rootkit Revealer (free) HijackThis (free) SpyBot Search and Destroy (free) AtGuard (free firewall, very restrictive, a good way to keep unwanted users away from your computer because every page requests permission for every little applet and javabean that tries to run) So there you go.
