On the surface, the 2015 Steam Winter Sale seems fairly mundane as these things go: Good deals, cute comic, but nothing we haven't seen before. But maybe—just maybe—there's more to it than meets the eye. The Steam Sale Detectives on Reddit have discovered a rabbit hole, and at this point there's no telling how deep it goes. The “rabbit hole” is actually a hidden password prompt that can be reached by going to any Steam store page and typing “search” (without the quotes) and pressing enter. The prompt is apparently handled by this bit of “nothing to see here” javascript, which includes a link to store.steampowered.com/actions/clues. Entering the correct password will presumably lead to a different page, but there's no hint as to what it might be. Or is there? Of course there is! The first page of the Northpole Noir comic originally featured a barcode, which closely—but not perfectly—matched the barcode tattooed on Agent 47 of Hitman fame. Entering that code on the Steam store page for Hitman: Codename 47 results in another code, and that, appended to the Winter Comic URL, leads to an audio file: "I was on the right track. I could feel it. Tomorrow, I was going to search again." That's not all: The “incorrect” Hitman bar code replaces three numbers—6, 0, and 4—with three 9s, which also happen to figure prominently and in a similar sequence in a string of text hidden in the Northpole Noir “Sending a Message” trading card: 794E2CEA991. There are other potential clues as well, like the “nesse” printed very faintly in the bottom-left of the first page of the Northpole Noir comic, which just happens to be under the part of the cover that was torn away. Some or all of them may be red herrings, but one thing's for sure: There's a mystery here, and we need to solve it. Source http://www.pcgamer.com/something-strange-is-afoot-in-the-steam-winter-sale/

Halloween is (nearly) upon us. What better time to play Dragon Age: Inquisition, Battlefield Hardline, The Sims 4, and other games EA has discounted seemingly at random for its Halloween sale. Sorry, it's Zomboss Invasion sale, in which the baddie from Plants vs Zombies has slashed the prices on loads of EA's best games. There is some Halloween-themed stuff in there, including the Dead Spaces, Alice: Madness Returns, and The Sims 4: Spooky Stuff, but mainly this is your opportunity to buy all the Dragon Ages, Mass Effects, and many of the Battlefields for cheap. DA: Inquisition for £14.99! Battlefield Hardline for £16.66! Those seem like good prices. And there's some non-EA stuff in there too, including Tomb Raider, and The Witcher 2, for £4.49 apiece. Also, from the sale page: EA's Theme Hospital is free. It's not clear if it's still free from January, or whether it's gone free again to join current On The House freebie Red Alert 2, but free is free. Source http://www.pcgamer.com/

If the rumors are true, the updated laptop would include the new Force Touch trackpad, which responds differently based on how much much pressure you apply to the surface. Those of you looking to buy Apple's new 15-inch MacBook Pro with the Force Touch trackpad might finally get your wish in just a couple of days. French blog site MacG reported the news, pegging the information on "reliable sources," as translated by 9to5Mac. If the rumor is true, the updated laptop would likely include the new Force Touch trackpad, which responds differently based on how much much pressure you apply to the surface. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro would join the 12-inch MacBook and the 13-inch MacBook Pro in offering the new Force Touch trackpad. Force Touch brings a new type of sensitivity to Apple's standard trackpads, where people trace and tap with their fingers to move the cursor on the laptop's screen or to initiate actions in software applications. The technology is pressure-sensitive, so for example, a light press might select a word on a web page in Safari. Meanwhile, a deep press might bring up a Wikipedia entry on that word based on Apple's Force Touch gestures. Force Touch is the latest feature designed to give Apple's MacBooks a greater competitive edge over rival laptops. The Force Touch trackpad also provides tactile feedback, so you can feel when you've performed a certain task. Further, Force Touch contains four sensors that let you click the trackpad anywhere, even along its top edge, so it will respond no matter where your finger lands. Some reports have suggested that the Force Touch technology might pop up on the screens of the new iPhones. Force Touch is perhaps the most enticing feature in the redesigned 15-inch MacBook Pro. But the new version is also likely to sport upgrades to its Intel Core processor as well as the graphics processing unit, according to 9to5Mac, adding up to a speedier performance overall. In March, the 13-inch MacBook Pro was treated to a small processor boost as Apple updated the CPU to Intel's fifth-generation Core i-series, formerly code named Broadwell. But wait, there's one more tidbit reportedly in the works this week. On Wednesday, Apple may also launch a new edition of its 27-inch iMac desktop, 9to5Mac cites MacG as saying. No details were available on this new model, though 9to5Mac suggested that it's the non-Retina Display model most likely in line for an upgrade. Source http://www.cnet.com

Auctioneers expect the fully restored fighter, once flown by Great Escape veteran Peter Cazenove, to create a real buzz when it goes under the hammer World War II Spitfire pilot Ken Wilkinson poses for a photograph next to a restored Vickers Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1A at Imperial War Museum Duxford A rare RAF Spitfire which was shot down during World War Two and forgotten about for 40 years is expected to sell for £2.5 million in a landmark sale. The MK1 Vickers Supermarine Spitfire was flown by Great Escape veteran Peter Cazenove in an air battle over Dunkirk. Just 55 minutes into a flight, on May 24, 1940, Cazenove's Spitfire was hit by a single bullet fired from a Dornier 17-Z bomber. The Old Etonian radioed in to say "tell mother I'll be home for tea", before belly-landing onto the sands of Calais beach. German officers sitting on the the downed Spitfire in 1940 (BNPS) Uninjured, Cazanove walked into Calais where he joined up a with a British regiment. However, he was later captured by German forces and held as a Prisoner of War. The Spitfire, known as P9374, was left to nature and was consumed by successive tides, sinking deeper into the sands where it remained for the next 40 years. In September 1980 the Spitfire was discovered after strong tides pushed it back above the surface. Although it was barnacled and corroded, the aircraft was largely intact but salvagers and trophy hunters caused serious damage as they tried to get a piece of the plane. The aircraft later underwent a full restoration and is now one of only two Mk1 Spitfires which are restored to original specification and still flying. RAF Museum handed over Spitfire in 'ill-conceived' deal for WWII aircraft it may never receive Both are owned by Thomas Kaplan, an American philanthropist and art collector, who is now selling P9374. The Spitfire, which flies "beautifully", is expected to sell for around £2.5 million at Christie's 'Exceptional Sale', which will be held in London on July 19. Mr Kaplan will be donating the proceeds from the landmark sale to the RAF Benevolent Fund and Panthera, a leading wildlife conservation charity. He has donated his other Spitfire - N3200 - to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. The kindhearted businessman said: "When my great childhood friend, Simon Marsh, and I embarked upon this project, it was to pay homage to those who Churchill called "the Few", the pilots who were all that stood between Hitler's darkness and what was left of civilisation. "The upcoming events of July 9th are, more than anything else, concrete gestures of gratitude and remembrance for those who prevailed in one of the most pivotal battles in modern history. "As history tells us all, there comes a time when one simply has to step up...to act with passion, and to remember with gratitude the few that actually do." The MK1 Vickers Supermarine Spitfire (BNPS) The Spitfire was originally built at the Vickers Armstrong factory in Woolston and delivered to 92 Squadron at RAF Croydon in March 1940. It was powered by a Merlin III engine which was built at Rolls-Royce, Derby, on 27 October 1939. After it was recovered, the Spitfire first to the Musee d'l'Air at Le Bourget, Paris, and subsequently to further collections until the parts eventually ended up with the Aircraft Restoration Company / Historic Flying Ltd. at Duxford. Spitfire crash landed after pilot 'pulled wrong lever' A team of 12 engineers spent three years meticulously restoring the Spitfire for Mr Kaplan and Mr Marsh. The completed aircraft successfully returned to flight for the first time since the Second World War in September 2011, and was flown by John Romain, Pilot and Chief Engineer at the Aircraft Restoration Company. He later said: "This is a fantastic restoration to be justifiably proud of. Spitfire P9374 is a truly lovely aircraft, and she flies beautifully." Robert Copley, deputy chairman Christie's UK, added: "Christie's is proud to be entrusted with the sale of this Spitfire - a truly iconic aircraft which is symbol of the bravery 'of the few' in the Battle of Britain. "We look forward to seeing this extraordinary Mk.1 Spitfire reach new heights at 'The Exceptional Sale', which will be a unique moment in auction house history." Source: The telegraph UK
