  1. Asus RT-AC66U router review Amazon.com price (90 USD) Amazon.co.uk price (105 GBP) Amazon.de (125 Euro) Image Source Technical details: Dual-band, 802.11ac, up to 1750Mbps AiRadar intelligently strengthens wireless connections via high-powered amplification and beam-forming 4x gigabit ethernet LAN ports 2x USB 2.0 ports 256MB ram 2.4GHz or 5.0GHz (can be active at the same time) Web-based interface Advanced cooling (whatever that means) The specs are pretty good, especially considering this is not a new (2018) router. Most people now would (rightfully so) expect USB 3.0. The "advanced cooling" sounds like a gimmick or something every router company could say. However I have noticed that it does not get as hot compared to routers I've previously owned (like the Cisco-Linksys E4200). I have not had issues with this router when it comes to heat, and rarely have to restart it. Speed wise it is able to handle whatever I do. Gaming and streaming netflix works with no problems, even with more than one person on the router. Connection with Chromecast works great. It may rarely loose connection but usually that is a problem with the chromecast, and only sometimes requires a router restart. I've owned this router since 2013 and see no point in replacing it. It has not noticeably degraded since then. The only reason I could see upgrading would be to attach a hard drive to it (since this one is only usb 2.0) or maybe to find one that has better web applications. This Asus supports the cloud applications that Asus has, but I haven't been impressed by them and haven't found a good use for them. A huge problem with this router is that when you attach a hard drive, the CPU goes to 100% constant. I remember trying it a few years ago and at the time there was no fix for it. I haven't checked, but I doubt that there is a fix right now. Adding a VPN directly on the router is not supported with the default firmware. To do this you need to use other router software like DD-WRT. The one I currently use can be found here. DD-WRT allows you to add a VPN to your router and turn it on/off whenever you want. It supports OpenVPN, PPTP, and TOR. VPN that I use is called Private Internet Access (PIA).
  2. Cisco-Linksys E4200 Dual-Band Wireless-N Router: 114 - 179 USD (Amazon Link) 117 Euros (Media Markt Link) ------------------------------------------------------------------ - I bought this one after the Cisco-Linksys WRT160N router broke. Specifically in mind that I wanted to be able to game and stream a movie or show at the same time. I live in the Netherlands, so I have a VPN to the USA with a Netflix account. - So far (after a year) this router is great and still runs perfectly. I am able to play online (Starcraft 2, Cod4, Cod MW3, World of Warcraft, and Diablo), while connected to the VPN and streaming a movie off of Netflix. - I decided to attach a fan to this router, I will make a tutorial soon on how I did that later - Also, this router is dual-band. Meaning it supports 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz. Now the 5GHz is useless to most people, because their computer does not support it. But if you are like me, you have wireless card in your desktop which does support 5GHz. I will make a review of that wireless card as well. The advantage of having dual band, is that there are almost no devices with 5.0GHz, so you will not have any interference. The disadvantage is that you will lose a bit of range. The range reduction was not a big problem for me, even though the wireless router is on the ground floor (1st for the Americans) and my desktop is on the 2nd floor (3rd floor for the Americans). - To put a VPN directly on the router, you need to install the DD-WRT software on the router. Linksys' default software does not support putting VPN on the router itself. --------------------------------------------------------------- Advantages: Dual Band: 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz -- Good: no interference with other devices -- Bad: lose a bit of range Gaming, download, and steaming work great, even at the same time Supports DD-WRT software (DD-WRT Link) [ RB updated Link 16July18 ] Disadvantages: Gets hot, so you need a fan or a good location Have to install DD-WRT software to put VPN on the router itself ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If you are curious whether or not your router supports DD-WRT, you can check here 2. If you are curious about which VPN I use, I use StrongVPN. 3. If you are curious about my desktop wireless card, check here: Amazon Link Media Markt Link
  3. Hey guys so I was wondering about something yesterday. If I go buy a different wireless router other than the one that my ISP provides for me is it worth it? Will it improve the connection when playing over my wireless network? I have begun playing wired because i began to lag too much over my network. Also, my internet sucks its like 12mbps or some BS like that. thanks, BD
  4. Is it possible to limit internet speed to a specific devices connected to my router, based on mac address? My router: Netgear R6300 OS: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/18/12) mega If you need more info, let me know.
  5. Have a new router ZyXel NBG 5615. It is connected to DSL modem(coaxial cable, ISP provides non-static IP, speed 10mbit\s). And by WAN RJ-45 connector are modem and router connected. Zyxel has the opportunity to set bandwidth management options manually. So I did after using Gaming Engine, which is preset and didn´t help at all in ET and youtube playing. All else was Low prioritised gaming was set to High, but gaming console has only: Xbox, msn gaming options. So I guess it won´t work. Here´s my manual tries, deleted IP is my static IP from router(LAN IP): SS: 1.general pic, 2.settings for ET. 3. outgoing connection(to WAN). 4. incoming connection(to LAN) So I´m wondering if I mess it up or it isn´t possible to reduce lag when youtube starts first buffering, internet speed is enough to play lagfree after first buffering.
  6. There came the need for WiFi router. Some say "Linksys WRT54GL" is a good choise even if its used one, but I wonder if the lifespan doesn´t end after 2-3y. At least some reviewers say it served them 1 or 3 years. Also I guess technology is advanced and there are faster chipsets\CPU´s out there for routers? Not that router manufacturers give any information about chipsets the routers are based on. If I go with brand new one is there any particularly good ones? Also I´ve been thinking to change the modem as its 5+ years old(dunno the exact age as it was in my place before me) and sometimes just goes crazy and eats 50% of packets(after restart its all ok again). My IPS uses apparently CISCO EPC3825 and some other models from EPC series. I wonder if its good enough or there are better solutions out there?
  7. I made this tutorial on how to add a fan to a router after making the review for the Linksys E4200 (My review) Now, this tutorial shows specifically for this router. But I am assuming this same method will work for any router. Router: LInksys E4200: Inside of the Linksys E4200. You will have to open the router up, so that you can attach the wires of the fan on to the switch, enabling the fan to draw power from the wall. It is also possible to use batteries, but they will drain pretty quickly. If you look at the top left of the router's motherboard, this is where the switch is located. Where the power comes in from the wall. This is where you want to solder the wires of the computer fan to or you can also just use electricity tape to attach the wires. Here is a computer fan. I cut the wires, the black is positive and the red is negative. On the router, where the power cable plugs into, it will show the positive and negative part. I did not have enough space to put the fan inside the router, so I put it underneath: This works, because the bottom of the router has holes. The fan pushes air up into the router from the bottom and out the sides. This keeps the router completely cold. It does not heat up at all, even though it is in a small space where it used to over heat. If you have any questions, let me know! Here is another tutorial for another router, basically doing the exact same thing. Only this one is a bit cleaner and the fan is located inside the router: Link
