Breaking: Windows 10 to launch on July 29

The rumours and leaks were true: Microsoft has confirmed that its next flagship operating system, Windows 10, will launch on Wednesday, July 29.

The operating system will be available in 190 territories globally with existing Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users having one year (i.e. till 29 July 2016) to upgrade to the new operating system.

The current build, 10130, could well be to be the penultimate one with Microsoft likely to launch one or more builds before the final version.

In addition to improving Cortana's interface, the latest build introduced keyboard shortcuts for the Charms bars and new ways to customize the Start menu.

Free forever

Microsoft stressed the fact that users who update during the promotional period will be able to use Windows 10 at no cost forever (or as the company puts it, for the "supported lifetime of the device").

Microsoft has confirmed that those wanting to download the free Windows 10 upgrade can reserve a free copy in the coming weeks.

The popup that I got said that you can reserve the download and then install when you want.  I guess that you would have a year to decide to install it or not.  I just have to find the email addy that I gave them when I DL it! :)  (or did I give them an email?)

"Enter your email to get a confirmation" for when you send them your confirmation (??) that you do want the download when it becomes available.

The upgrade to Win 10 installs via Windows Update, so it would not notify you via email.

I reserved my copy for my PC via the Taskbar icon (Win 7 Professional -> Win 10 Pro), and I'm doing it now for my SP2 via Installing the 'Get Win10' update (Win 8.1 Pro -> Win 10 Pro). That leaves me one spare license to either put on my Optiplex programming computer, or my ThinkPad. Hm.

I'd say that it's going be a great release and it's worth trying out for free while you can. You can always uninstall it if you decide to go back as long as you do not delete the windows.old folder, or "Old Windows Installation" via Disk Cleanup, because this will be an in-place upgrade.
