I once read in a newspaper article that researchers had found a couple of genes related to pain perception in humans.  Call them A and B.

 

One half of people have the combination A+B and feel average pain.  B+B can tolerate a lot of pain.  A+A feel much more pain than the other three-quarters of humanity.

 

But remember that this was a science report in a public newspaper, and we know how accurate those can be, or not be, or somewhat be.
