Mac battery

Hey, I'm curious, I have a MacBook Pro, and CoD eats my battery up like crazy. Is there anything I can do to make it so that it will last longer?

Thanks so very much!

**Edit Jan 18** I meant while it's still attached to my main power source. It still eats up my battery...

That's what she said! :P

But in all seriousness, when I play FPS shooters in a laptop, I usually turn down everything as much as I can down to the basics to cut down on component usage, that usually gives me a bit more time depending on far how I pull back the set up, I imagine you can do the same with CoD.

Other than that, there's little i can suggest apart from the usuals (turn down brightness, sound, etc).

Perhaps the CoD addicts will know some better tips.

I'm not quite sure why you'd want to play without a mains power supply?

But if you must, then have a look for high capacity Mac batteries. As standard with most PCs, you get a 6cell battery and you can opt to buy a higher capacity 9cell battery.. So in theory, Mac probably do the same thing.. So search for replacement batteries and check to see if they do high/low spec ones and get a higher spec one if it's better than yours.

Also, there are external battery packs for Macs which I believe aid your battery life.. Might be worth looking into but as with most Apple related products, they're not cheap.

shut off all your programs except cod4. turn keyboard light way down to almost nothin if u have that and then turn brightness down as well. thats what i'd do but like the other guy said why wouldn't u just keep it plugged into the wall while playing?

My $0.02 :)

Try removing your battery :P Im pretty sure PCs bypass the battery while it's fully charged so I'm not sure why the hell COD would be draining your battery even whilst plugged in o.0

But if I were in your situation, I'd remove the battery.. Constant draining/charging of it will only ruin your battery anyway.

The idea of a battery is for when you have no constant power supply.. I dont get why Mac designed it this way o.0

If his Mac is new, he can't remove it (well easily anyway). They reworked the battery about a year or so ago so that it's larger, but unremovable unless you take the laptop apart.

I'm not sure how Apple does the power supply switching on current Macs, but try the above suggestions and turn off apps running on your dashboard. Make sure you have unneeded radios such as bluetooth etc turned off.

Check out here for a few more hints.

Thanks, y'all!

And NoGooD, your link isn't working. Apple doesn't have that page anymore, I don't think. If it does, I can't access it.

Ok, I've spent a while trying to maximise my battery life:

1.) close all programs and apps.

2.) do a quick clean up, using iboostup (free in the app store) to free up memory (then close it)

3.) turn down keyboard lighting and screen.

4.) open COD4 and go through settings making the graphics worse - less computer needs to work.

5.) play COD4 and enjoy the >30 minutes extra game time.

hope this helped.

*after i saw the update that its still connected to the mains, you should go to the apple store because it shouldn't use up any of the battery store.

maybe new battery? or new charger?

Hold on are you saying when it is plugged into the mains, it is still draining the battery? Is it charging at this point or has it charged fully and discharging? That sounds like a more serious issue.

The external batteries that used to be available for the Mac are no longer. I can't remember their name but Apple got all mad etc and made them stop. IIRC they claimed magsafe patent.

As for taking the battery out I wouldn't... I bet it won't boot. Just sounds like something Apple would do (hardware compatibility etc to limit fake Macs)

Yeah, I can have my laptop be completely charged and it'll be down to 94% (still plugged into the wall, too) after I stop playing. It hasn't happened as often lately, so I'm taking a guess here and saying it's because I've stopped playing in full screen.

That is a feature of Apple and also used by other Laptop manufactures recently. I believe Apple was the first with it, or one of the first.

Unless you remove the battery, it cannot be bypassed. And that's quite simple, if you removed the external power it should be switched immediately to the battery to prevent an awesome black screen. So, the solution is to let it pass the battery always. However, in that case you're not only draining it full time, you're also recharging it at all times. And the latter one is bad. Very bad. So the solution is easy, don't load it always, but only if it drops below a certain threshold. If it drops to 95%, it isn't that noticeable on the long run, about 15 minutes (on a 5 hour battery life). Yes, that can be the last resources which you'd need, but it is much better for the battery.

I believe this should also occur when you're not on CoD4 but on external power; however (obviously) slower. It might be the case that on low power passing the battery is not required, but 1. I doubt that and 2. It requires a bit more explanation on an electro technical field.

Hey, i was talking to a friend about macbooks and he had a similar problem.

he solved it by getting a new charger as his one was apparently faulty.

Try use a friends charger and see if the problem still occurs.
