Agreed btu one thing I can say in the years I've been here; making changes like this or some other that have been requested - and I know I have had a lot - fall on deaf ears.

A few thoughts on the issue of poison knives, since I use these almost exclusively. I presume some of the complaints about jay1 knife throwers in this thread are at least in part about me personally, which does not offend me, but which does, I think, give me some cause to elaborate.

 

First, Harry is correct that poison knives serve a tactical function beyond annoying people. Delaying an opponent's respawn countdown is one of them, which Harry explained well earlier in this thread. Personally, though, I find them most useful in clearing out small rooms where lots of opponents are camped out defending an objective. If you can poison one guy, the medics in the room will start throwing medpacks at him (assuming they're not totally self-interested). This means that those medics are not shooting, at least for a moment, and if your team backs you up, you can break a really solid defense this way. I have done this many times--in the bank room on goldrush, e.g., or in the objective antechamber on decay, or in the tower on italy, or so on.

Second, knives are not an effective way to get kills. If you feel that knives are "unfair" (a complicated question, on which I am ultimately agnostic), you should consider that players who regularly or exclusively throw knives, even if highly accurate in their use, are almost always at a negative k/d ratio. I have been doing this a long time and do not think I am particularly talented at using them, but on a great day my accuracy is somewhere between 40-50% over the course of a full ~30 minute map, with somewhere around 100-150 total throws. Most of the time, a poisoned player will either find a medic, find a medpack somewhere in the wild, or simply kill themselves with a grenade. None of these outcomes bother me--if I wanted to have a lot of kills, I'd use another gun, and if I wanted to have an impressive k/d ratio, I'd play a different game altogether. Also, excepting very close quarters combat, you can usually dodge a thrown knife, and I find that sufficiently skilled players regularly do so. Limiting the player to four knives feels totally reasonable and is another barrier to casual overuse.

 

Third, the disorientation feature of the poison knives--which I gather is what bothers boki especially, but probably others as well--has never been the selling point of knives for me. It is not tactically advantageous most of the time in objective play. At best, it slows players down as I try to fling myself as fast as possible at the objective. This effect is even more useless when there are significant numbers of bots online (usually the case during the hours I typically play), as they are functionally immune to the disorientation. I understand that this probably is very annoying if your primary interest in playing ET is to have 100% smg accuracy at any given moment. I find this kind of play as insipid as others probably find the knife stuff I get up to. To each their own. When I throw a knife at someone, I want them to die. I don't really care if they can't aim properly while that happens. If it were decided--and I don't even know if this is possible--to remove the disorientation effect of poison knives but keep everything else, I wouldn't object.

 

The big thing I'd emphasize here is that poison knives, for me, go hand-in-hand with really serious objective-oriented gameplay. As much as my playstyle (whatever that means) is distinguished negatively, perhaps, by using them, I think it's also distinguished positively in the sense that I am 100% monomaniacally focused on completing the objective. This is why I only play offense. Knives are integral to breaking a defense in the same way that a flamethrower can be, or poison smoke, or so forth--all of which are also "annoying" weapons. And, to be clear--they're not some kind of cheat code. I die constantly. Good players have no issue killing me over and over again; excellent players seem almost preternaturally gifted at dodging the knives before I even throw them.

 

I understand that there are lots of players who would like jay1 to resemble some kind of professional ET server, to some degree or another, and while I understand the impulse, this seems contrary to the basic fact that we're talking about a jaymod server. There are many other mods and servers dedicated to sweatier forms of gameplay and I assume those don't come with the ability to vault over walls at 90 miles per hour while flinging knives at people. I want to do that, so I play on jay1. I don't play this way to annoy people, although I understand that plenty of people are annoyed. I personally find arty incredibly annoying, and requisite of significantly less skill than even a panzer--but I don't want to ban its use because I understand that it has a tactical function in the game, just like everything else. I'm fine if we want to remove the disorientation of the knives--like I said, that almost never matters to me--but if you remove poison knives altogether I will literally never play this game again.

True, if it happens that on the server you are with some other players on the same team, against me, playing becomes total shit experience for me - because  the disorientation effect is so frequent, I just quit. I do not mind the poison, actually, just the disorientation. Not sure if those are inseparable or not.

 

I tried to play with knifes a few times as the primary weapon and didn't notice I am able to impact anything except being able to get cca 20 kills per map. Of course, I am not very precise with them, since I use them so rarely. Regarding objective play, if I want to clear a choking point, the only effective things I noticed to be are artillery, mortar, green smoke (or often just smoke) and eventually rifle grenades. One guy with knifes disrupting defense on a choke point... I have my doubts here.

 

As you say, removing poison part would stop you playing, the same goes for me with the disorientation, if too frequent. I often go see if there is another server where I could play now, because of the disorientation and all the spam/chaos that ensues on Jay1. Once my favorite server, it became not so favorite at all, since some of the adjustments were made to weapons. Also, because of the settings, the focus players have now, shifted - most do just what is easy to do: spam, spam, spam ... from a "safe" position. Quotes because nowhere on the map is really safe.

The only reason I come so often to Jay1 is definitively not the settings - it is because I kind of "know" everybody there and my attachment to FA. Settings are mostly shit, lol. ?

ET - We still bitching for heavy weapons, rifle grenades, knife, adren, flame throwers - less power / over power, artillery, etc. etc.  :) 

 

We offer different server with different settings and those not liking knifes, double jump, etc. can play on ETL US, silent, hardcore, etc. servers.

 

Keep the rant on because when you close one topic another idiot opens same thing again. If you can't take a death from knife then Jay1 isn't for you. 

 

Now if you tell me why their is no ET Trickjump server - that I can agree and we make it happen.

Those are typically dead most times and don't have the people we're familiar with playing every night.

It's just not a good argument. But, like I think I posted above, changes like this just don;t happen here and anyone who's been here long enough knows that

@Caipirinha Bruh, you're earning some personal reputation from us. Joedirt got the knife count reduced. It used to be 7, need to get it back to 8 ?
