Lags out 100% of the time ....

seem to remember punkbuster doing something like this back along

it lets you play while trying to communicate/update then drops the connection (leaving you frozen)

but error box disappears when you close et (instead of sitting on top)

try minimizing (alt+enter) when first joining and running ok and see if there are any error boxes in the background  (or firewall blocking)

also there is a manual way to update punkbuster but i cant remember it .................

I see your thinking mate however FA doesn't use PB any more.

If PB was the culprit you would be better off using pbsrv.exe which would check its installed properly and fix it if it wasn't.

The reason i mentioned ETkey is because its checked every 10 ish minutes and if one isn't found it will boot but usually gives a message, that said its not out of the realms with ET as it tends to spit its dummy out a lot.

Also i know silent uses silent.dat but do you have an ETKey and is it installed correctly, not having a key installed properly will still allow you to connect and play for a short time.

Bit of info and suggestions:

 

Windows 10 affinity options are slightly different. To set in win10 open taskman then either click the details tab at the top (or right click ET.exe then select 'go to details') then right click on the ET.exe in the details process list and you can then set affinity. Personally i cant see that being an issue though but least you now know how.

 

As you have tried the basics like run as admin etc if your running ET 2.60b then i'd advise trying ET legacy and seeing if you still have the same issue, or visa versa if your already using legacy try 2.60b. Legacy and 2.60b can both be installed at the same time and work independent of the other, if nothing else it will help eliminate ET as the problem.

 

Try that to start and come back if its still not working or your having the exact same issue with Legacy.

 

I will answer the questions in order:

 

• Not a "clean install", but copy/pasted from my old gaming box.  It worked fine there on F|A servers for years.  Does not on new machine, but it is the one and only online game I have any issue like this.
• I just installed a brand new copy of 2.60b of of the F|A site.   Same results.
• The copy I moved over from the old box had a valid ETKey.
• The fresh copy of 2.60b I installed today off of the F|A site, I don't know.  Is this something I'd need to do manually?  Would not having valid key produce these results?
• I have tried other servers, but some time ago, and I don't recall this issue.  I can again as a test, though my main interest is to play on F|A.
• I will try "affinity" fix again.
• I've already tried run as admin.  I have not installed ET Legacy.  I'll try to locate it on F|A and install a copy.

I did the manual update, but it says it is up to date.

ET Legacy is availalbe from their official site mate and is as simple as install and go.

PB wise updating it wont do anything as PB stopped support for ET years ago but as its a drag and drop install its worth running PBsrv.exe from http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/

Its also worth checking when in game that you do actually have an ETKey as its been known with drag and drop installs to be missing the correct ETKey etc.

 

/sil_guid inconsole for silent and /cl_guid for normal ET GUID, if any of those come back as blank then thats your problem.

Could also be your GPU going low power if you see freezes. AMD known for this issue and I remember having problems. Clockblocker stops that on AMD's.

As mentioned earlier in this topic, something might popup in the background, but if you're playing fullscreen you'll never see it. This happened to me in the past with a windows firewall popup.

Have you tried playing in windowed mode to exclude this problem? This would also make it easier to check other things when you lag out again, like task manager.

 A couple follow ups:

 

• Tried ET Legacy.  It installed fine and it found my ETKey.  Same problem.
• Tried using the original ET installation on F|A but windows.  Same problem.

Really frustrating.  I don't know that I have the physical space, but I'm half tempted to KVM my old box just play on ET.  Though it is, literally, the only game/app I have problems with on this new rig.
