Xernicus Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I keep getting this message, and I've tried doing some Googling, but I haven't gotten very far. I don't really care what it's complaining about (since I don't use Windows Media Player anymore), but it gets pretty irritating. I don't even have the Windows Media Sharing service turned on either. Here's the error message: Coming from the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Configuration Application" I changed two system wide settings that I think could be the start for this problem (it's only been happening for a week or less) Moved the pagefile from the system (C:\) drive, to my second disk (D:\) to improve system performance Turned off homegroup, because I don't use that sh!t, and it takes too much IPv6 overhead. The icon for the error dialog box on my taskbar is that of the Windows Media Sharing, which matches up with the name of the service. I haven't done any troubleshooting, such as "mfc /scannow" because I don't really see the importance in this service. Any suggestions? Quote
Anton Chigurh Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Lol the sys file check was my first suggestion Did you receive the visual C++ and the dotnet update perhaps? Did you update your java engine? Quote
Xernicus Posted April 8, 2015 Author Posted April 8, 2015 So just got sh*ts and giggles, I ran a SFC check which came up clean. C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Looking through the Windows Update log, I see that I haven't gotten a C++ or .NET update in well over a month. I have, however, installed some games via Steam recently which always runs through the C++ redistributable installation upon first launch of whatever I downloaded.I haven't updated Java in quite awhile, so I'm pretty sure that's not the cause. Upon checking Oracle's website, it would seem my version is still current (Version 8 Update 40). Quote
Anton Chigurh Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 1 other idea, since you disabled your homegroup, is the media sharing service looking for something that isn't there anymore? This service can be a pain in the... because it sometimes starts itself multiple times trying to establish a connection or something like that. maybe your error is memory related (shortage) Quote
Ann!b@l Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Try a re-installation of WMP: -Control panel>Programs>Turn Windows features on or off. -Once the "Windows features" window open, in the "Media features", untick "Windows Media Player", confirm in clicking on "OK", then reboot. -re-install in using exactly the same steps than above and ticking the box this time. -leave WMP turned ON during some days and see if this fixed your issue. If there's no problems anymore, then you can turn it off again since you don't use\need it. Quote
Xernicus Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 *sigh* f*** it. I'm just gonna reinstall Windows. Quote

Xernicus Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619779(WS.10).aspx Thanks mate! This seems to be 200x better than the instructions I was following (read: too lazy to shake dat a$$ for some ca$h and check TechNet) Copied the replacement files per the instructions and rerunning the SUR tool as I type this. I have had this issue before and could not watch films it was a pain all i did was get was vlc media player. Windows always has issues with new updates hope this helped or just reinstall windows again http://vlc-2015.com/UKG.php That doesn't fix the issue, merely mitigate it. Now that wouldn't be a problem except I already don't use WMP. I wouldn't use your download link though, and here's some reasons why: Clicking the Download button above will download the setup file to your desktop. Opening this setup file launches AirInstaller to manage your installation process, which may offer additional and optional offers from 3rd party software advertisers. By installing, you agree to the Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy. Learn how to Uninstall this software. This software is a derivative of an Open Source project licensed under GNU. The original version of this software is also available free by clicking here. Additional & Optional Advertising Offers The download manager might recommend you to install the InternetHelper Toolbar (powered by Conduit/Bing). You can decline to install it. In any event, it's a good practice to download the original installer from the original (developer's) website whenever possible. I could (possibly) decline whatever crap they want to install on my computer, but I know that the installer from videolan.org is clean, trusted, and does not come with any unwanted addons. Thanks for the advice though, it was well meant and that's what matters. I appreciate your response. Quote
