Ol Smoke Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 In lieu of what is happening in todays hacker world I am going back to using cash for most of my transactions. We just had a group of hackers go through Oregon and install skimmers at gas stations and stores. Took over $30k. I am now on my third VISA card from my bank because Brazilians keep stealing the numbers from online stores. I stopped using it about 3 years ago. I only use the Citibank card. I would make a suggestion to all of you out there. Get a Citibank VISA or MC. I have not had one problem with them since I got the card in 1996. I have rang up over $450,000 worth of charges on that card without one hack. I have had two hacks on my Discover card and I had to finally get rid of the debit card from Bank of America. I got called by Discover one day, wanting to know if I was in New York in a strip club? Someone there was trying to get a lap dance for $200 on my discover card. I closed two PayPal accounts because of hackers. I got hacked on Craig's List twice by porn ops. To show you just how bad it is, I did this test with a buddy of mine who is a top level internet security tech for Intel. We built an XP server using XP pro server OS. We installed it on an open internet connection without any anti-virus or firewall protection. We installed a hit counter for the firewall instead. Twenty minutes after it went live, we had more than 200 hits on the harddrive. Within 4 hours there were over 2000 hits. We didn't have anything else on the server but the OS and it wasn't connected to any other device. It was amazing to watch the HDD light come on all the time as the hackers accessed it. It finally went down about 6 hours after it went online. It was so corrupted with Trojans and spam it wouldn't run. Costco issued us a new American Express card last year because ours was on a list of corrupted cards that had been hacked. So after all the stuff in the news lately with Target, walmart and others, I am going cardless. Yep, I pay cash for everything now. Except stuff that I may have to take back to the store. A while back I bought some shoes and stuff from a specialty store. I paid with my Citibank card. The shoes and stuff did not do what the store claimed and made my feet hurt worse, so I took them back. They wouldn't take them back because of their "no return policy". But when you purchase anything on a credit card, the law gives you the right to take it back for 30 days. So when the guy got testy, I called Citibank. They talked to him. I got a full refund. So from now on, when I donate to the F|A, it will be cash. The admins will have to decide who is going to come and get it from me. So there. 2 Quote
NormanCorn Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Just get a card with a high percentage cash-back award. Every time a hacker spends, you get money back Quote
Tonka Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I hear ya, got one of my debit card numbers stolen, using cash more these days. So from now on, when I donate to the F|A, it will be cash. The admins will have to decide who is going to come and get it from me. So there. Well, with the distance I live from Oregon, it would be cheaper for me to donate for you rather than go get it Just get a card with a high percentage cash-back award. Every time a hacker spends, you get money back 2 Quote

Unless I take longer then normal to donate, I donate a little more for interest. Except Speedo seperated the amount he donated with my added interest. That bum. Quote

Summ3rLady Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 So I work in Insurance Claims and have to settle losses for Homeowners and Renters policies. The whole 'pay only in cash' is awesome to make sure you don't over spend your budget, or get your credit card hacked. But just a heads up. If you ever have a claim (from fire, theft, whatever) they WILL ask you for documentation to prove what you owned. Insurance companies prefer receipts or credit card statements to prove a purchase. You may not get paid for a lot of items if you don't have the paperwork for them. It can be nearly impossible to come up with the documentation if you made your big purchases with cash. So save yourself a headache and get a $40 fire/water proof safe. Throw any receipts or manuals for items you spend $250.00 or more on in there. Heaven forbid you have a loss, but if you do you'll be glad you spent the two seconds saving that receipt. 1 Quote
