narc Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 if some told you that 1 = .999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 into infinity, would you believe them? Of course not, that's impossible right! not so fast there partner. lets look at this: So. 1-.999=.001 right? right. but what happens when the nines are infinitely reoccuring? (that's a lot of nines!) well.. I dont have infinity room, and i have no overbar, so imagine the following ten digits as infinite. 1 - .99999999999999(infinity) -------------------------------------- 0.000000000000000(infinity) So! we have realized that if the 9s never end, the zeros never end. if the zeros never end, then you can never place the 1 at the end as a remainder. if there is no remainder then the number remains 0.000000000 infinitely, which also equal 0. So! what does that mean? well lets see here.. 1 - .9infinity= zero infinity = zero . 1 minus zero equals 1 thus .999999 infinity equals 1 perfectly. not as in super duper ultra close to 1, but rather that it EXACTLY equals 1. mathematicians know of several ways of numerically writing many numbers, but this is hands down the most mindf***ing one of them all in my opinion. I mean, how was that even possible? Quote
narc Posted March 1, 2014 Author Posted March 1, 2014 and if that interested you, then I have two at home projects for you! prove that 1+1=2 . philosophically. Haha see you in a few weeks. If you even care enough to attempt that one (i certainly wouldn't attempt it lol) then you should look up and possibly subscribe to numberphile on youtube. that guy's brain works on levels none of us will ever achieve. indeed he is so good with advanced math, that he toys around with gravitational trajectories to poke at Newton. (FYI newton is easily the smartest individual this world has ever seen) Quote
ronaldounit0 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Think of it as fractions as well! 1/9=.111111111 2/9=.2222222222 and so on until 9/9 . What does 9/9 equate to? We know it's one by simple division, but in reality it .9999999999 into infinity. It's just close enough! 1 Quote

Antichrist Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) I don't see how 1+1 philosophically could pose a problem to anyone. It's the most fundamental of all math equations. If I kill narc 1 time with a grenade. Then kill narc 1 time with MP40. How many times did I kill narc? 2. I don't see how it can be any more complicated. Edited March 1, 2014 by Antichrist 4 Quote
Heretic121 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Math is irrefutable, your interpretation of it is not. 1 = 1, 2 = 2 and a recurring decimal is exactly that. 1 Quote
ajnl Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 If you're taking an integral of a function, f(x), then you are using infinitesimally small steps. So wouldn't each step actually be equal to zero? If it is equal to zero, then you're getting no where. if: 0.9999999 (infinitely) = 1 then: 0.000001 (with infinite zeros) = 0 Quote
Brig Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 an easier way to prove narc is right is to take 1/3, decimal value .333... 1 x 3 ------- = 1 yet the decimal value .333... x 3 = .999... 3 Quote
lyo Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 But we know that 0.999999... is not 1 Imo the point of wive is important to accept whits answer is the right. Quote
