how Nasa intends to capture an asteroid ?

The idea of capturing an asteroid may seem unbelievable to most.

Yet following U.S President Barack Obama's instructions to Nasa that he wants to snare an asteroid and then launch it into the moon/earth orbit, the space agency has released a video of how it could be done.

This is all part of the development of a potential manned mission to Mars.

How Nasa intends to capture an asteroid ? Here ( full video by Nasa for the first time)  :

Dude, that is amazing, or will be if they pull it off :D

Ya! That is crazy  :lol2:

I recommend watching this  video in full screen ( after some seconds of commercial)

That'll be interesting seeing what they find, if anything. I'm also curious what they're looking to find, that's driving them to do this...

Agree with this whole statement..

crazy...

typical for USA. all ideas are crazy, but they really let some dreams come true. (Moon and so on)

:lol

If you don't dream, nothing at all will ever get accomplished. :D We are dreamers..

Why is it crazy?

I think they are looking into mining asteroids and possibly into how to divert asteroids if they are in a collision course with Earth. But that is just a guess.

Interesting but getting the trajectory correct will not be easy, especially when there is a delay in the information sent between central command and the capture probe. The asteroid will have large momentun due to its weight and having enough thrust power to stop it will also proove diffiult.

True, but that is why they calculate the path of the asteroid, so that they won't need to make major adjustments later. Momentum will definitely be a problem.

Indeed. The simplest scenario would be that the asteroid is moving along a linear path, but the problem is applying enough froce from the thrusters to stop it. One may apply force over longer period of time to affectively stop the asteroid but we all know that the path of a astronomical object tends to be orbital so then the force would have to be diverged from a linear force - and this is where it gets ugly lol. Oh and just going back to applying a force over longer time - how much fuel would you then need lol.

For those interested have a read - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momentum

Right then if they do " capture" a asteroid and bring it into a near earth orbit getting it to go away and not come back to bit us in the ass might be a trick too. Just my thoughts on it  :eek
