Connection Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 if you don't like district 9, you probly big fan of apartheid eh i loved district 9. what struck me most about this movie was that not even halfway into it, i found myself rooting for the aliens in the film, and thinking that most all of mankind was practically all self-absorbed, inhumane garbage. now this isn't an entirely new sentiment by any means, but it's an angle that very few movies intending to make any money would dare to take. this alone might make the movie worth mentioning, but wait a minute - ZOMG i just said the most striking part of a sci-fi movie was some existential, quasi-environmental, cathartic, racially and politically charged feeling that i got from watching it?? .. the best part of the movie wasn't some CGI explosion scene? and it was a sci-fi movie?? yeah. district 9 is a real movie, that doesn't have as it's selling points flashy visuals, pop-star soundtracks, sigourney weaver and at least one soft-core porn scene. it isn't obviously to be followed by lunchbox, video game and toy franchises. It's about aliens, but it doesn't expect the viewer to be satisfied by their inclusion (ooooh aliens cool). they aren't just a token fantasy creature for 'the good guys' to fight; they're the driving characters of the film and you end up empathizing with them pretty quickly. This is a good movie because it has meaning, plot and subtext, and unabashedly so, but at the same time manages to have quite possibly the best battle mech scene in any movie i've ever seen, even better than appleseed 2 or the decepticon attack at the desert military base in transformers 1 =D it's a sci-fi movie for people who think Contact is great sci-fi. that said, if you think Transformers is great sci-fi, you probably won't like it. that's not to say that the cgi isn't good - the movie does look good, believable, at times fantastic (BEST MECH SCENE EVAR11), but that's not what the movie dwells on and in the end not what it leaves with you.
Fb!N!nJa Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 I like the alien ship it makes the movie exciting
PHANTASM Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 No soft porn? No Sigourney Weaver? No Bruce Willis? Actually it looks pretty cool from the trailer. Have to see it when it goes to cable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6PDlMggROA
