Google set about providing internet!

Super fast broadband!

In march 2010 Google announced that they would be test-driving a new high speed fibre optic network in the US. Almost 1,100 cities applied, in attempt to influence Google's plans.

Now, Google have clarified that they will be providing ultra-fast fibre optic broadband to Kansas City, hitting speeds of 1GB/second! That's about 1000x faster than most people's internet speed. Based on that, I think it's fair to say that this broadband network will mean instantaneous page loads, not to mention immense connection to gaming servers.

Google suggest that on their broadband network, a customer would be able to download a full length, full-HD movie in roughly 5 minutes!

Google wrote in a blog post that they appreciated the interest of other cities, but chose Kansas City after a "Careful Review", as they were looking for a city they could "build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations".

However it's said that their decision was probably influenced by the fact there are only 150,000 inhabitants occupying the city.

Google will not however be running as an ISP in the internet game. They are building the fibre optic network, but customers will choose from several ISPs working on the new network.

It is said by Google that the service is aimed towards making the internet "better for users", stating that such internet speeds will surely promote new services, using YouTube as an example - YouTube would never have taken off the way it did if the majority of the US hadn't moved to broadband from dial-up.

This new service sounds fascinating. I surely hope that such a network will eventually be more wide-spread.
