Hi there,

i have a strange issue while playing. I recently reinstalled my PC due to a hardware error five weeks ago. With the new setup (on win11, et-legacy 2.83.1) i experience a two second lag every first time an objective sound plays. Like "command post constructed..." After the sound is once played, there is no lag anymore. Lag-o-meter shows a gap when this occurs. I first thought the christmas paks could be the source. But i still have this issue, even after the christmas stuff is removed.
System is running on a pcie 4.0 nvme not a 5.25" disk. ;)

It happens nearly alwys on S1 but even on HC ( i played yesterday short time but i experienced it once)
Does someone else has the same issue? Any advice how to fix? This is really annoying...

edit: i already tried the pk3 cleaner but it didn't help

thx in advance

this is first time i encounter this type of error to be honest, i would go for 2 options to fix it since i dont really know whats causing it

1. check your /com_soundmegs should be atleast 160

2. reinstall your silent folder (REMEMBER TO SAVE SILENT.DAT FILE)

incase these doesnt work, i would reinstall the whole game because this solution always works for me 😄

just dont forget to save your data, i would keep the entire ETLegacy folder there - rename it to "ETLegacy old" so u get fresh ETLegacy folder when u install it back, then incase u lost anything just copy the data from old folder :)

I had this issue years ago and have no memory on how I fixed it. I do remember how badly it would piss me off though so I can atleast sympathize and I'm sorry you're going through this, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

One sound related issue I did run into with the newest ETLegacy release is having the game crash upon starting and trying to connect to a server. I was temporarily dealing with it at first by just deleting the Legacy Mod directory after I got done playing (I don't even play that mod to begin with). The fix ended up being to set my com_soundmegs to 24. Every other value I tested would cause the problem.

If you do adjust the soundmegs as recommended by the lovely @Drempa , make sure once you're in the selected mod or on the server to open the console and -> /com_soundmegs and press enter -> to make sure the new value didn't end up latched.

seta s_mixPreStep "0.05"
seta s_muteWhenUnfocused "0"
seta s_muteWhenMinimized "1"
seta s_musicvolume "0.25"
seta s_volume "0.8"
seta s_initsound "1" unsafe

com_soundmegs are now "64" but were "160" before. Didnt change anything. I revert to 160 (someone gave me the advice to reduce this)

Im actually using a wireless headset. Before i used a external USB-Device (PreSonus Studio 26c, which i use for my music stuff) Is it possible that the wireless headset can cause this? i never thought about that.

I will test it today using my old USB device with cable-headset

@Drempa if nothing helps i will try this.

Thank you @Haruhi Suzumiya  @captnconcrete @Drempa
i will report...

crazy, it really depends on the sound device. with usb soundcard and wired headset, no issues...
how can a sound device cause lags in the game? with HyperX Cloud III wireless i get these lags. without, not.

Ty @captnconcrete for the question:

sorry, again.

It still happens. even with the other sound device. I played a bit on ETL:US with some bots and even there it happens. I will look forward to reinstall. Which files contain the UIDs, the .dat files in every mod directory, and in profile? I want to save only essential files.

plz help :)

I was thinking of "too small soundmegs", too.

Mine is "seta com_soundMegs "128"" (in etmain profile and assumed to be in all the mods profiles)

If the soundMegs is too small, then the client might be rereading the pk3 to find the actual sound.wav and then storing it in memory for next usage.

Are your soundmegs now 64 or 160?

Try setting your soundmegs to 24. There's been more than a few people having sound issues with recent ETLegacy updates and 24 soundmegs has seemingly fixed all of them. There's another topic or two on these forums where it was the fix, it fixed my game crashing issue (24 was the only value that fixed it, tried a few), and it also just fixed my buddies issue that he described as "getting random sound hitching in game for some reason".

1-Add seta com_soundmegs "24" to your config.

2-Modify the ETL target path. This will get rid of "latched" issues. Remember to check in game after - Open console, type /com_soundmegs, hit enter.

    - Make a shortcut for etl.exe

    - Right click on the shortcut and go to "properties"

    - Modify the "Target:" to read:  "C:\Program Files (x86)\ETLegacy\etl.exe" +set com_soundmegs 24 (just add the +set com_soundmegs 24 to the end of whatever path is there)

    - Always use that shortcut to open game

You can also use this to fix any latching issues with other cvars such as hunkmegs or zonemegs. Here's my full path just as an example:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\ETLegacy\etl.exe" +set com_zonemegs 64 +set com_hunkmegs 768 +set com_soundmegs 24 +set fs_game jaymod +exec window.cfg +exec binds.cfg

Hope this one works!

you need etkey from etmain, silent.dat from silent. not sure about other mods since i dont really play other mods..

like i mentioned before, its better to keep your ET folder incase u forgot to copy a file.. just keep it few days till you figure out everything :)

just to give an update - com_soundmegs 24 did not make any change. I played the last three days and had the same lag issues when announcer sounds get played.
So i decided to reinstall today and made a backup of the folder. I copied the files you mentioned and got my identity back. ✌️

I will test within the next days and give an update if it works or not. I still use com_soundmegs 24 in order to see if the reinstall did the the trick. I will write on weekend if it succeeded.

Hey mate

Try to increase /com_hunkmegs if its less then 128 then try to increase /com_soundmegs to 160-200 and higher

24 is too little

Launch your ET in win7 or xp compability mode, it may work

Try to create new profile from game and see how it goes. In old days it was mechanical drive that was causing it in conjunction with audio from Nvidia drivers.

As others explained sound meg should be at least 200Mb at this point. We are in the era where everyone got 32Gb RAM.
