Two second lag when speech sound first plays

Hi there,

i have a strange issue while playing. I recently reinstalled my PC due to a hardware error five weeks ago. With the new setup (on win11, et-legacy 2.83.1) i experience a two second lag every first time an objective sound plays. Like "command post constructed..." After the sound is once played, there is no lag anymore. Lag-o-meter shows a gap when this occurs. I first thought the christmas paks could be the source. But i still have this issue, even after the christmas stuff is removed.
System is running on a pcie 4.0 nvme not a 5.25" disk. ;)

It happens nearly alwys on S1 but even on HC ( i played yesterday short time but i experienced it once)
Does someone else has the same issue? Any advice how to fix? This is really annoying...

edit: i already tried the pk3 cleaner but it didn't help

thx in advance

this is first time i encounter this type of error to be honest, i would go for 2 options to fix it since i dont really know whats causing it

1. check your /com_soundmegs should be atleast 160

2. reinstall your silent folder (REMEMBER TO SAVE SILENT.DAT FILE)

incase these doesnt work, i would reinstall the whole game because this solution always works for me 😄

just dont forget to save your data, i would keep the entire ETLegacy folder there - rename it to "ETLegacy old" so u get fresh ETLegacy folder when u install it back, then incase u lost anything just copy the data from old folder :)

I had this issue years ago and have no memory on how I fixed it. I do remember how badly it would piss me off though so I can atleast sympathize and I'm sorry you're going through this, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

One sound related issue I did run into with the newest ETLegacy release is having the game crash upon starting and trying to connect to a server. I was temporarily dealing with it at first by just deleting the Legacy Mod directory after I got done playing (I don't even play that mod to begin with). The fix ended up being to set my com_soundmegs to 24. Every other value I tested would cause the problem.

If you do adjust the soundmegs as recommended by the lovely @Drempa , make sure once you're in the selected mod or on the server to open the console and -> /com_soundmegs and press enter -> to make sure the new value didn't end up latched.

seta s_mixPreStep "0.05"
seta s_muteWhenUnfocused "0"
seta s_muteWhenMinimized "1"
seta s_musicvolume "0.25"
seta s_volume "0.8"
seta s_initsound "1" unsafe

com_soundmegs are now "64" but were "160" before. Didnt change anything. I revert to 160 (someone gave me the advice to reduce this)

Im actually using a wireless headset. Before i used a external USB-Device (PreSonus Studio 26c, which i use for my music stuff) Is it possible that the wireless headset can cause this? i never thought about that.

I will test it today using my old USB device with cable-headset

@Drempa if nothing helps i will try this.

Thank you @Haruhi Suzumiya  @captnconcrete @Drempa
i will report...

crazy, it really depends on the sound device. with usb soundcard and wired headset, no issues...
how can a sound device cause lags in the game? with HyperX Cloud III wireless i get these lags. without, not.

Ty @captnconcrete for the question:
