almost a year since this topic has been raised, no wonder players go to other servers... myself pointed the same - Sten is useless. some top players claim the same (people that can consistently shoot with 50% accuracy).

I was once told by an FA Leader, a decade or so ago, that the sten is the 'most accurate' weapon.  I wonder he meant 'for close-in fighting' or was he being ironic? 😄

I'm not mod expert but here are a few elements of reflection:

 

- Mods development included an attempt of making thinks more balanced and more fun; in the original game, Thompsons firing rate used to be slower than MP40 but it used to make more damage; also, panzer used to consume ALL of your power charge, K43 and Garand M1 used to be slightly different as well, etc.

- Sten was not meant for assault (the FG42 was). It was meant as for stealth operations, iit's fair to see it as an upgrade/alternative for the silenced Colt/Luger and the knife, the main goal is to explore beyond enemy lines while staying undercover.

- People are losing it when it comes to the sten spread (200), which is only half of the Thompson/MP40 (400), making it in practice twice as accurate. But that should be considered as an additional benefit to compensate the lower damage (14 vs 18 for the other SMGs). People are not supposed to rush main battlefields equipped with sten, they're supposed to get their ass back on undercover mission (providing the map allowing it).

 

The rest is, and that includes overheating at 11 or 13 shots, is just pointless jabbering..

It's an 20y/o game, which was always free to download, with currently little to no tech support from the original teams (Splash Damage, Omnibot, FU, etc.)

 

Additionally, this is not the main reason people plays on a mod or another; people will choose because of:

- the double jump

- the selection of weapons

- the selection of landmines and the availability of trip mines

- the number of skill levels

- the curve/straight firing line of panzer

- the choice of maps

- the list of available commands

- etc. etc. etc...

@PHNTM Only asked if it's possible to correct the overheating of sten on jay1. 9 months later we still don't know 😅

Since it is xmas time, I reveal this: it is not so easy to "fix" this as on other mods.

 

Overall our main servers are ment for fun, some different setting for each server. For over 20+ years game, some still take it way too seriously. Rating is not life, but challenging yourself to actually help your team is.

 

Try it sometimes and you might be suprised how ppl look up to you in a different way: be THE player that will help, heal, build, destroy and not just frag.
