SSD Review and Comparison

Alright so today I am going to review a Kingston 64GB V Series SSD. I will also compare it to my Seagate Baracuda 7200 rpm HDD. One of the most common questions is "Will a SSD give me a performance boost in games. So what I did was compare 3Dmark Vantage Scores between a regular HDD and an SSD.

 

Overview of the Kingston 64GB V Series SSD:

 

  • 200 mb/s Read
  • 100 mb/s write
  • mounting options for desktop and laptop
  • was priced at $110 at NCIX
  • Lifespan: 1,000,000 hours

The SSD was not mine but instead was my friends. We used my system for the tests though since it was able to run 3Dmark and PCmark Vantage. It wouldn't run on his system since his comp was a bit old and he was just trying to breath new life into it with this SSD (which it actually did and it ran much faster).

The Verdict

 

An SSD will not give you a performance boost in gaming. Any performance boost that can be associated with it is so minor that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference (unless your eye can distinguish between 1 FPS). What an SSD will do is help boot your system a lot faster and all programs being run on the SSD will have a tremendous speed increase. Photoshop took 2 seconds to load and that was after 3 seconds after starting up the computer. That is simply wow. If you don't believe me, the second your computer logs in, try starting photoshop and see how long it takes (even on a 955 BE it took like 12 seconds or more). My friends i7 can't even boot it that fast on a regular HDD. So the final verdict is this: Good for overall system performance, No difference in gaming.

Most of the game do continuous read after game is started. You will see performance when our comparing IDE VS SSS for gaming, but for SATA and SSD you will hardly see rise in performance except fast game load times and fast map loading time. A simple RAID 0 can easily help you at low budget.

 

You should also post more specs and details regarding I/O usage and benefits. That will make your blog outstanding. :)

 

Don't worry for comments, since avg users on this forums do only one thing..lag lag lag.. rather then updating there system. :)

Alright I will put more details in and maybe include a Pros and Cons section. Only problem is that my knowledge on SSD's is pretty limited XD. Maybe you can help fill in the gaps? Edit my blog if you feel like (i don't really know much about them since they are completely new to me. That was the first time i ever used an SSD before lol).

 

EDIT: Some info I found on the web, but I am unsure how accurate it is considering Kingston has the older Version 1 and newer Version 2 SSD's

No wonder Kingstons SSD's were so cheap. The performance is terrible compared to other SSDs =P

If you ever like to learn about new tech things, always learn the basics and then upwards. Whitepapers on Intel website are pretty good source if you are planning to learn about SSD and Gate's. I guess you will do good with EEE major's if you like Gates and all. :)

 

Thanks man. That Intel X25 is pretty damn insane looking at the anandtech review. I thought this SSD was good at first because I was comparing it to my HDDs, but its actually a poor performer compared to most SSDs on the market lol.

ur best bet for now in till prices go down is 2 kingston v series 30gb on raid 0 your read time dont drop as much as a single drive is about 160 dollars 80 bucks each

Hey what about temperatures?

 

Do SSD's get hot like HDDs?

 

No they don't. :) There are no moving parts in SSD AFAIK.

lol btw check out my other hard drive bench, normal hard drive samsung spinpoint F1 SATA 750 Go - 32 Mb... my ssd kick ass ^^ look at the heat index

medic you should do a raid 0 get an extra ocz , your rig will be bursting pass the 300 mb

 

personally i said personally I really don't see the real benefit for a person like me to use it :P
