  1. As I am in medical science, I'd love to share an old weird medical story that a colleague pointed out to me: A 15-year old girl without external female genitalia has been found 9 months-pregnant after she has been to the same hospital due to a knife fight, 9 months before. Doctors can only guess how she might have gotten pregnant. Read the story and find the PDF of this publication here http://img2.timg.co.il/communafiles/21227065.pdf Why was she involved in the knife fight and why is that relevant? Explanation:

  3. Ever wondered what was lurking beneath the surface of London's Regent's Canal? Quite a bit from the looks of it. A treasure trove of bizarre objects has been dredged up in a massive clean up of Regent's Canal. The haul included a wheel of a discarded bicycle, a rusty shopping trolley and a mud-stained mobile phone. The Canal and River Trust drained the Kentish Town lock of 50,000 gallons of water to replace its lock gates. Dumped items also included a digital camera, a car tyre and tattered pieces of clothing. Wedged eight feet below the surface, they were were fished out this morning during the maintenance job. Hundreds of people watched as the canal was opened to the public. Graham Smith, Canal and River Trust construction supervisor, told Mail Online : "The lock gates haven't been replaced since the early 1990s, so this was a really rare opportunity for visitors." Last October, the capital's canal - which runs from Mile End Stadium to Limehouse Basin - was drained for maintenance as part of a £45million countrywide scheme to keep the country's waterway system in good working order. Paris' Canal Saint-Martin was recently drained for cleaning for the first time since 2001. Among more than 40 tons of waste removed was gold coins, a WW1 shell and even a car. This time round, it's was a little less glamorous, with wheelie bins, bicycles and mopeds among the recovered items . 4. The astonishing admission was made on Twitter by a gaming fan desperate to keep his progress on a 1994 game release A computer gamer has revealed that he was so keen to preserve a game he's been playing that he's kept his console turned on for 20 YEARS. Nowadays, with consoles like PS4s and Xbox One, gaming fans are used to saving not just one game, but many stages in lots of different games. But back in the 1990s, the Super Nintendo didn't offer such technological advancements, as the batteries keeping saved progress eventually died and the game was lost. So when Twitter user Wanikun wanted to keep on playing Japanese game Umihara Kawase, he decided just to leave it on. He shared an image of his Super Famicom - the Japanese name for the Super Nintendo, also known as SNES - which has been on for more than two decades to keep his progress. He tweeted that the machine had been constantly on for 180,000 hours - or 20 years, six months, two weeks, three days, eight hours and 39 minutes. "Incidentally, I’m pretty sure my first generation Umihara Kawase, which has been on in the SNES for over 20 years, has been in operation for over 180,000 hours. If the power is tuned off, I’ll lose all my replay data. Probably." According to Rocket News 24 , Umihara Kawase - which stars a 19-year-old Japanese school girl, Kawase Umihara who is lost in a world of mutated creatures - was released in December, 1994. Wanikun reveals that he did unplug the machine once only - to move house - but the battery stayed alive long enough to keep his progress saved. 5. On the surface, the 2015 Steam Winter Sale seems fairly mundane as these things go: Good deals, cute comic, but nothing we haven't seen before. But maybe—just maybe—there's more to it than meets the eye. The Steam Sale Detectives on Reddit have discovered a rabbit hole, and at this point there's no telling how deep it goes. The “rabbit hole” is actually a hidden password prompt that can be reached by going to any Steam store page and typing “search” (without the quotes) and pressing enter. The prompt is apparently handled by this bit of “nothing to see here” javascript, which includes a link to store.steampowered.com/actions/clues. Entering the correct password will presumably lead to a different page, but there's no hint as to what it might be. Or is there? Of course there is! The first page of the Northpole Noir comic originally featured a barcode, which closely—but not perfectly—matched the barcode tattooed on Agent 47 of Hitman fame. Entering that code on the Steam store page for Hitman: Codename 47 results in another code, and that, appended to the Winter Comic URL, leads to an audio file: "I was on the right track. I could feel it. Tomorrow, I was going to search again." That's not all: The “incorrect” Hitman bar code replaces three numbers—6, 0, and 4—with three 9s, which also happen to figure prominently and in a similar sequence in a string of text hidden in the Northpole Noir “Sending a Message” trading card: 794E2CEA991. There are other potential clues as well, like the “nesse” printed very faintly in the bottom-left of the first page of the Northpole Noir comic, which just happens to be under the part of the cover that was torn away. Some or all of them may be red herrings, but one thing's for sure: There's a mystery here, and we need to solve it. Source http://www.pcgamer.com/something-strange-is-afoot-in-the-steam-winter-sale/
  6. Kent Police are investigating a string of reports in recent weeks of people wearing clown and Halloweeen masks in travelling around in vans and approaching children Police have deployed extra patrols around schools following reports of pupils being stalked by people wearing clown masks. Kent Police are investigating a number of reports in recent weeks of people travelling around in vans and approaching children. Officers said some people have been wearing clown or Halloween masks in a bid to try to scare pupils walking to and from schools . Parents and children in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge have now been urged by police to be vigilant following the “suspicious incidents” . Chief Inspector Dave Pate said: “We are still working to establish whether any offences have been committed. “However, I want to assure parents that we take the safety of all children very seriously and have extra officers on patrol around schools.” Last week the Mirror Online reported on clowns who were targeting pupils at Hillview School for Girls, in Tonbridge, Kent. Since then, there have been reports of people wearing clown masks being spotted in a van on St John's Road in Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools in the town issued their own advice after a boy was approached by two men in a van on Wednesday morning. Last week head teacher Elaine Buchanan sent an email to parents warning them about the incidents, which happened earlier in the month. She said some of her students had been approached on separate occasions by two people wearing black outfits and white clown masks. The 'evil clown' phenomenon has been growing in the UK and especially in France, with one town banning the wearing of clown masks following a spate of violent attacks. Source http://www.mirror.co.uk/
  7. Footage of the Baltic Sea appears to have captured a cluster of flying orange UFOs before they vanish into thin air https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwAVcvGHEgs A new video uploaded to YouTube appears to show strange lights in the sky, hovering above the Baltic Sea on Russia's western edge. The 'cluster' of UFOs were filmed at sunset which, according the the video's creator, is the best time to catch UFOs. "When the sun is setting, the light that bends around the cloak will no longer work for a few minutes," wrote Scott C. Waring from ufosightingsdaily.com. "This is why so many are seen during this time of the day," he wrote. In the video, the glowing lights hang in the sky for a period of time, before vanishing - seemingly into thin air. Strange glimmering lights were spotted in the sky above the Baltic Sea According to the video, which was uploaded to YouTube last week, the sighting took place on August 5, 2015. It's possible that the craft could be the latest top secret Russian military hardware being tested under the steely gaze of premiere Vladimir Putin, or it could just be a few weather balloons out for a casual fly. 8. Minnesota police released dashcam footage showing the end of a nearly 20-mile-long pursuit. When the driver got out of the vehicle, he turned out to be an 8-year-old child. Two more children got out of the car who were siblings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm3s-tW-7tw Lt. Tiffani Nielson said he was "absolutely shocked" when he saw the driver and two passengers. All three children appeared to be in pyjamas. The car was reported to the police after drivers called 911 reporting a vehicle swerving on the freeway. No one was injured, Nielson said, and the children were returned to their home. Source http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
  9. #Hipstercop: Twitter goes mad for police officer with a very impressive moustache #Hipstercop A police officer has got tongues waging on Twitter after being snapped sporting an impressively manicured moustache. The Metropolitan Police officer was branded "Hipster Cop" after being pictured at an English Defence League march in Walthamstow, east London, on Saturday. Word of this eminently fashionable enforcer of the law spread quickly on Twitter, and by Sunday he was trending with the hashtag #hipstercop. • Are moustaches the new beards? One Twitter user wrote: "#hipstercop doesn't see this tweet as he communicates via fax machine." Another said: "#Hipstercop - solving crime one organic, fairtrade, venti, hot, wet, no foam latte at a time." It didn't take long for a member of force getting involved, with Sergeant Nathan Shickle, of Wandsworth borough police, revealing he was standing next to walrus-wearing "Hipster Cop" himself. 10. Security camera footage shows would-be robber Michael Meadows fleeing a noxious cloud after trying to hold up a chemists Michael Kevin Meadows accidentally pepper sprays himself foiling a robbery attempt A hapless would-be robber accidentally pepper sprayed himself while attempting to hold up a pharmacy. Michael Kevin Meadows, 43, entered the Bypass Pharmacy in Beaver, West Virginia wearing full camouflage, a paintball mask, and wide-brimmed hat. According to police he released pepper spray in an attempt to subdue employees who were working in the business at the time. He then moved forward to the counter and into the cloud of pepper spray meaning he breathed it in. Video footage from security cameras showed him being overcome by the spray at which point he had to turn and flee. Meadows was seen staggering outside and was then driven away in a car, a 2005 GMC Denali, by an accomplice. The driver of the car was later tracked down by police and told them all the details of the failed robbery. He identified Meadows as the would-be robber in the attack on Tuesday, police said. Meadows was then arrested and has been charged with attempted robbery. He is in Southern Regional Jail and a judge set bail at $100,000. A spokesman for the Bypass Pharmacy said the business was open and safe for customers. Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

  13. Bioamplifiers are devices that can be used to actually visualize neuron action potential; the ability to use impulses to stimulate muscle movement. Greg Gage and Tim Marzullo have created Backyard Brains, which sells bioamplifiers called SpikerBoxes that allow at-home scientists and students to explore neuroscience. Simply connect electrodes to invertebrate legs, like from a cockroach, and listen to the neurons. When connected to an mp3 player, you can even get the leg to dance along with the beat. Gage decided to apply the same principles of dancing cockroach legs to squid chromatophores, which are similar to melanocytes in that they contain pigments, though they also reflect light. Squid chromatophores can be highly reactive, as animals may need to change color quickly in order to avoid detection by predators. Gage isolated a squids fin nerve and surrounding chromatophore-containing muscle, and subjected it those impulses. As it turns out, the chromatophore responds best to a heavy bass line. Bass frequencies have longer waves, which charge neural membranes longer and get a better action potential. The cells are also able to ‘dance’ along with the beat due to the fact that mp3 players output AC signals, of which the current can be reversed through the neural membrane. DC signals cannot, and would likely only produce a single twitch of the cells, which isn’t nearly as fun. Gage magnified the squid cells 8x and played “Insane in the Brain” by Cypress Hill because of the bass (and also doubles as a neuroscience pun). They have dubbed the video “Insane in the Chromatophores,” and it is totally awesome. In honor of Cephalopod Week, check it out:
