BeeDee
Hey guys so I was wondering about something yesterday. If I go buy a different wireless router other than the one that my ISP provides for me is it worth it? Will it improve the connection when playing over my wireless network? I have begun playing wired because i began to lag too much over my network. Also, my internet sucks its like 12mbps or some BS like that. thanks, BD
Platinum VIP King Cat Pee Posted December 19, 2017 Platinum VIP Share Posted December 19, 2017 I don't like renting "their" router (pay monthly). I will buy my own. You want to keep it up to date though ...like once a year get a new one. As for improvement ...if your ISP sucks, the router won't perform magic. ajnl
If your ISP connection is slow, then a new router probably won't help. I disagree with updating your router every year. That sounds expensive. I've had the same router for 2 - 3 years and it is still more than fast enough.
exe
Yeah I agree with anjl, See what your internet speed is with the ethernet cable. Easiest way is to go here http://www.speedtest.net/en/ . Then check your router's bandwidth. If the test gave you better results than the bandwidth written on your router, buy another router! If not, there's no use to buy another router. Also, check your routers range, if its too far away its normal for you to lag. (buy a wifi booster if its the case) If your ISP connection is slow, then a new router probably won't help.I disagree with updating your router every year. That sounds expensive. Flible
Your router is only an extension of which the stability may be influenced. It is likely something else. To be honest, I never heard of a wireless internet being more stable than ethernet connection to that same internet. What could be the case is that your channel is being interfered with by other people in the neighbourhood, and this might cause instability (though it is still a pretty far-fetched consideration to make). https://www.extremetech.com/computing/179344-how-to-boost-your-wifi-speed-by-choosing-the-right-channel More likely explanations is that there is interference from other hardware in your house or that there has been an increase in things like metal-containing concrete between your router and you. Updating your router every once in a while is fine, but upgrading it sounds like bs. Once it works, it works until security etc is no longer provided for by its manufacturer(s). /e If it's speed rather than stability it may be limited by the hardware you're trying to connect. Most devices have an internal limit set up. My asus k55vd can't reach over 40 mbps, ever. Which I think is perfectly fine. Vanaraud
You might get higher speed out of a new router, though even older routers(anything from this century;)) should be enough to have bandwidth for 12mbps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11 What might help to improve stability over WIFI is a good WIFI repeater, unless your PC is located within 1m of a WIFI router. For ET anything above 1mbs is plenty. A second router acts as NAT firewall, so it might improve security. Though you never can "clean" up the air, so best for gaming is still cable.
