The Republican National Convention will include a presentation on Bill Clinton's sexual adventures and an evening highlighting the attack on the American embassy in Benghazi, it has been reported.

Details of the schedule, designed to embarrass Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump's Democratic rival, came as he took the unusual step of confirming his running mate via social media.

"I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence," the presumptive Republican nominee said on Twitter yesterday (Friday).

Sources close to Mr Trump had earlier confirmed that the governor of Indiana had been chosen, but the campaign had said it was delaying a formal announcement in light of the terror attack in France.

Mr Pence, 57, a long-serving Republican official, is seen as a traditionalist choice designed to appease the party establishment.

But he may be the only hat-tip to the old party cadres, judging by the schedule of the four-day Republican convention in Cleveland. The roster of speakers, leaked to The New York Times, suggests the event will be the most controversial conservative gathering in recent American history.

The usual speeches by Washington insiders and party elites have been mostly replaced by a line-up that includes astronauts, sports stars and even an Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts guru. In an attempt to allay Mr Trump's sexist image, speakers include Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle, Natalie Gulbis, the professional golfer, and Melania Trump, the real estate mogul's supermodel wife.

As Black Lives Matter and the New Black Panther Movement organise mass protests outside the convention hall, accusing Mr Trump of being a racist, Darrell Scott, a black pastor, will take the stage to support the likely nominee.

Mr Scott said last night that he was praying for Mr Trump, who he described as "the most hospitable, charming, charismatic, most friendly guy you would ever meet in your life".

Organisers have set different themes for each of the four nights, during which tens of thousands of conservatives and protesters will descend on the Ohio city.

Mr Trump's rise has caused unprecedented rancour and division within Republican ranks.

In an effort to distract delegates from this bitter battle, the schedule focuses heavily on attacking Mrs Clinton.

The first night will reportedly focus on the 2012 militia attack against the US embassy in Benghazi Libya, that killed Chris Stevens, the ambassador, and three other serviceman. Mrs Clinton was Secretary of State at the time.

The evening will also reportedly focus on her husband's numerous sexual affairs while he was president in the 1990s.

I wouldn't be surprised if a third candidate wins tbh. The reign of the parties might be too strong for that to happen though.
