Windows 10 already hitting some PCs early

Some lucky PC owners have already started to get Windows 10 ahead of its official release in less than 24 hours time.

Various users tipped off Windows Central to the fact that the updated OS had arrived on their machines ahead of the official July 29 release and speculation is that Microsoft has made the move to take the strain off come the actual release.

If you're one of the chosen ones, a new folder will appear on your operating system partition ($windows. bt) and you can start to get to grips with Microsoft's revolutionary new OS as soon as it launches.

Once we do hit release day, Microsoft plans to deliver Windows 10 to users in waves that will start off with Windows Insiders before users that reserved it through their copy of either Windows 7 or 8.1.

Remember to reserve

To make sure you get Windows 10 when it launches remember that you must reserve a free upgrade by clicking the small Windows icon on the task bar. Then simply choose to reserve your free upgrade in the app window, choose whether you want an email confirmation and then you're all set.

  • You can check out all the latest on the brand new OS by heading over to our Windows 10 live blog.

I read this and found that I do have a $windows.bt folder on C:, dated 10 July 2015. It has a "system" attribute.

In "C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther", the Panther folder and its contents are compressed.  It was modified on 20 July and 27 July.

I checked Windows Update today and it offers  a 6MB update to "...make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience..." (windows 7 pro here)

It seems that the Get Windows 10 app ran 25 July and reported that ALL of my programs are compatible!!!

I then noticed via the report-page's Q&A Link:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq?ocid=win10_auxapp_LearnMore_win10faq

that among the other info, we will have one month after installation to revert to a prior OS version.  I wonder about the mechanism of this.  If we restore a disc-image of a previous OS, will MS not allow activation of it?

Can I go back to my previous version of Windows if I don’t like Windows 10?

Yes, while we think you will love all the features of Windows 10, you will have one month after upgrading to revert back to the previous version of Windows on your device.
