Aniky Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Don't know how many of you are still around when we played back at past Contra on Sega console, basically i just saw some article showing how nowadays youth played Contra and failed miserably as the game by their opinion is "extremely hard", which amazes me that we played the same game back at past and actually rolling it all the time. Did we come to the point that nowadays most of the games aren't really that hardcore compared to the older games, that required the real skills? SiD Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Sega? Contra on NES is where she started. Back then we had very basic types of games with very limited options on playability. And many were designed to be played in arcades, so they would make these games intentionally difficult. To keep kids spending just to get the highest level/score. Games today? it's all about story and cinematics. And extreme hand holding. 9/10 games open with a tutorial level these days, or have minimaps to guide you. Some games (like bioshock infinite or deadspace) have a 'locator' to lead you in the right direction. Games back then? No tutorials. No introductions for many of them. It was just jump in and go. Look at Zelda for the NES. They drop you into the middle of the world and go 'You're on your own. Good luck.' Hundreds of hours were poured into that game looking for all of secrets and hidden locations. To even have some sort of guide/help you had two options: special Ninteno Power magazines or a nintendo hotline. It would cost you out the ass for a couple of tips for your favorite games. Now? Go to ign/gamespot/whatever for 100% walkthroughs. Youtube to watch people play. I think it has honestly made most gamers pretty casual compared to those of us who had to do the whole trial and error thing in the past. You can see this in Bioshock infinite, best, I think. Beat the game on normal/hard/whatever. it's a fun filled ride. Only a couple hard parts. Once you beat it, you unlock '1999 mode'. Less health, tougher enemies, less save points etc. It's f***ing brutal and very retro feeling. It shows you what the game would be like if it were designed back then. And games that try to be difficult? You get complaints out the ass on review sites. That it's almost impossible to beat. Or too hard. Those that liked punishment are a dying breed. We're no longer the target audience. Now that gaming is more accessible to a wider audience, games difficulty and presentation has shifted to meet these demands. It's a bit sad for those that like a challenge, but it isn't a completely bad thing. I know that I was never a fan being stuck in a level for over an hour, only realizing I have to backtrack to the beginning because I forgot to hit a single switch. Quote
