Heya Folks! I've finally managed to afford a copy of Watch_Dogs, which was a much anticipated game, launched in May 2014. Granted, because I have purchased it 4 months from it's release, many bugs have been fixed, and that might add bias to the review. This is a review of the Deluxe version, which adds some special DLC content.

This is a very unique game. It's action, FPS, Open-World... all things we've seen before. But this is the first game where you can hack other people, and with a seamless multiplayer element to it as well. It also includes many mini-games, which include driving, gambling, drinking, hacking, etc. I would not hesitate to say that this is what Saints Row IV should've been, despite the fact that I love that game as well.

There are two versions of the game available for download. The standard edition costs $59.99 USD, the deluxe edition costs $69.99. I would not expect a price-drop for awhile because of the high demand for the game.

Watch_Dogs is set in Chicago, IL, playing as one Aiden Pierce where everything is connected via a central computer system, known as ctOS (CenTral Operating System). This includes cell phones, traffic lights, routers, cars, etc. The plot starts off dramatically, where the protagonist's family is killed in a horrible accident that was set to happen due to Pierce's notoriety. Using the ctOS as the primary weapon, having Intel on every citizen and traveler in the city, you embark to get justice as well as control the corruption of the city.

Watch_Dogs is known for being one of the most graphically intensive games at the moment, with lofty minimum system requirements that state a SLI-ready card to play the game... but I've found this is not the case, and I will write my own "minimum system requirements". But do not fear, even at the "Low" settings, the graphics blow many other games' high setting out of the water.

  • Processor: 2.4 GHz Quad Core processor (AMD Athlon II x4 series, Intel Core2Quad minimum)
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon HD6xxx or above (Sorry, do not know NVidia equal), 1GB GDDR3 video memory.
  • Memory: Suggested is 6GB, I say 8GB to avoid any disk caching, and the ability to keep applications running in the background.

Pros: Graphics, Long Gameplay time, featuring over 9 "acts", with 10 or so missions per act. Mini-games, and ctOS crime control offer hours of entertainment even while not on the campaign. Realistic shooting, ie shooting someone in the leg will slow them down, not kill them, etc. Physics system is pretty realistic. Graphics are amazing

Cons: Driving is *alright*, but definitely more fun over realism. But then again, this isn't a racing simulator, names of the cars do not appear when you get in them, and I have yet to be able to blow up a car. You can make smoke pour out, but that's about it.

My rating is an 8.5/10 with the 1.5 deduction coming from the cars. I would certainly recommend this game if you are interested in strategic gameplay, with fast paced action, and an intriguing story.

Curious why you're giving the graphics a 7? Could you provide your card and settings?

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought this game when it came out for the PS4, so my interpretation may be a little bit different than yours but regardless. I'd have to give this game a 7. Let me preface I have yet to beat the game because I grew tired of the repetitive aspect and IMO mediocre story, I have gotten about halfway through.

Why?

PROS:

  • Really cool concept
  • Unique gameplay idea
  • Ability to be stealth or rambo
  • Great environment/graphics
  • Really fun free-running

CONS:

  • Ultra repetitive
  • Story lacks a bit of connection
  • I felt as if though the missions were uniquely different all had same gameplay idea, go here--hack this--great you win!
  • Multiplayer/Mini-games are TERRIBLE
  • Did I mention this game is repetitive? People say the same stuff, you start to realize a lot of it is canned

VERDICT:

Don't buy this game yet, as with many games that are pushed out on the release of now current-gen platforms it flops in a lot of areas. While if I bought this game for $30 maybe even $40 dollars I'd probably have a vastly different opinion. It just felt like an average game on the very cusp of being an amazing game.
