First i wanna start off by saying if this topic is in the wrong place please move it.

Ok, i have decided of making a map and i read on the forums about Gtk Radient, But from what i learned you need way more things then that to make a map such as goldrush, oasis, etc.

so my question is if you guys can list the things i need to make a map? and while you guys are at it can you tell me what would you want in the map?

P.S. - Can you guys tell me how to spot glitches in a map so i can fix them

i tried google but no luck :(

-Thanks for taking time to read this

I think in map making section (probably that's where this should go) you can find more stuff and links than you bargained for. As for stuff needed you can find plenty of models and prefabricated stuff (elements like command posts, ammo/health cabinets, tanks and lots more) designed to be used for maps. As I posted in another topic I followed this tutorial: http://www.pythononline.co.uk/et/tutorial.htm Also this looks like a nice place to find lots of things for maps: http://www.wolfmap.de/

As for the map itself-surprise us!

Run the map on a server and check for possible glitches. Also have others play on it and just go thru the obj(s) a few times and then just look at random places where glitches occur in other maps.

Well, Venice is my favorite map in ET, because it has all the qualities of a good map.

1. A good objective -- not too long, not too short; involves escorting a tank, stealing a relic, and escaping in a boat all in one

2. Well-sized -- big map, but players do not to travel far after spawn; good for any number of players, 10v10, 20v20, or 30v30

3. A good layout -- not too many choke points where one team can dominate the other (unlike Oasis and other maps); a variety of areas for firefights (both open spots and closed-in spots)

4. Good add-ons -- anti-tank gun that is actually able to be fired; well-placed MG's; etc.

Overall, it's a very good map and a great model for what I like to see in a map. Hope this helped. :D

Me being a scrim team member, i am partial to small, fast-paced maps like supply and delivery. But nonethless, a good map needs an obj, so might as well make it stand out by making up something, not copying old ones that every other maps has.

Im having problems with 1.4 an error appears which says Component transfer error

Ive never had that problem but is it during install and if so what operating system do u have? there may be compatibility problems with something like Win 7 or Vista, i use XP, those programs are getting a bit dated now and that wouldn't surprise me

i have windows xp atm

P.S. since your like a pro at map-making can you tell me which gtk radiant you use?

-thanks

lol im not a pro at map making, but i do consider myself an aspiring graphic artist, 3d modeler, comp programmer, web designer. almost done with my associate in computer web design, so i can program action script 3 in flash, java, c++ and use a variety of high end software that does lend itself well to this type of work, the gm scripts for omni bot are based of c++ for example

i use gtk 1.5 but have 1.4 installed too, both are buggy but the gui in 1.5 is closer to what im used to using in studio max and gmax even though the controls are totally different, it also has a plugin plugins/sunplug/et map coordinator that you need to use (you can do it by hand too) to keep from freezing the limbo menu, if you don't set the map cords the command map will freeze the game because it uses those setting to set up the grid, this is even if you don't have a command map it gives you the default orange and black no shader texture there but that's not a problem, this little problem took me like a week to figure out .. lol

the first step to making a map is make a big box and get 1 axis and 1 allies spawn position set up, then you need to make a devmap shortcut to et, thats what i do. Just copy the shortcut and name it devmap and add everything between the ||

| "C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe" +g_gametype 2 +sv_pure 0 +g_warmup 5 |

then you can launch the shortcut and type in the counsel (/devmap mapname) that will get the map loaded, also et game cheats work in dev mode like the no clip fly around mode etc.

just get something working and you'll be off and running in no time worry about the other crap latter(like the vis portals)

ill be the first to admit that my budapest map has some issues but it was done more for learning and i only finished it to work through the whole process so just make something and don't worry if its good or not, that can be addressed latter. even if everyone else thinks its total crap learn from it and make the next one better. I did some of the hardest things i could think of in that map and it took me about 8 months this one im working on has taken only a few weeks so far, maybe 40 or less hours.

what im saying is the first map you need to pick up so much stuff that by the time you get to certain things you'll wish you did other things differently but once you get the process down to some degree you can work those things in better, and instead of going well that's to much work to change now i might as well start over because you'll never get finished then ... lol ... you just have to make one and figure its not going to be perfect because its easy to paint yourself into a corner and most people give up at that point.

so if you can get radiant working, then go through the 2-bit tutorial and get a working map even if its just empty and i can help( or at least try to) with any scripting or entity problems you run into
