Haha, so far it's quite a bit to take in. I'm getting more used to the feel of the game, the maps are pretty hard to figure out though. Well, I know what the weird thing that keeps poisoning me is now, dang knives.

There is nothing to figure out in maps. You just have to learn the objectives if you want to do them, and/or learn the places where enemies usually gather or attack from, that's it.

My advice would be, play medic and learn how to fight, after you can fight better and you are familiar with the game, try the objectives or other classes.

That tutorial on Crossfire ('Tips for the newer/younger players') is interesting if you want to play etpro.

I don't think players playing Jaymod even care about their own spawn times (or bother taking enemy spawn times), after all it's a bit hard to push out when your and enemy spawn time is 10 seconds only or so :D

Or things like 'don't attack when they are about to respawn' (when they respawn all the time, every few seconds) in jaymod there is no tactics and no goals, or rather different ones.

Same for teamkill revive, with reactions like 'omg! nub! you made me lose my killing spree!' (which is btw impossible in servers with no friendly fire) Nobody gibs, nobody selfkills (at most they do it to avoid being killed), etc. etc.

So for a beginner it would be interesting to read about the way the game is 'really' played, but it would be different than what they see in public servers, and probably too much information.

And don't play like a wussy, never kill yourself unless you're stuck.

A few tips from me...

1. Make sure when you are in a fight to strafe back and forth and try to get around them and other crazy stuff :P  Just make it harder to hit you! I usually keep tapping crouch while strafing to throw them off. Not sure if it works or not, but I do pretty well lol.

2. Aim for the head.

3. If someone poisons you with a knife and you are unable to get someone to give you a medpack I always kill myself with a grenade :P

4. Set up a button you can reach quickly to kill out in time (/kill) if someone fires a panzer at you.

Differences in the servers.

F|A RECRUITING XP SAVE  (aka jay 1) -

F|A #2 XPSAVE FOREVER (jay 2) - think adrenaline is on this server not sure. (adrenaline makes your stamina bar not decrease for a period of time) makes you harder to kill

F|A BEGINNERS XPS FOREVER (jay 3?) - faster firing, adrenaline

All three of these servers are based on jaymod. Which is a mod for the game. They all include double jump (tap space twice to jump higher) and have a lot of slots for players. They also have poison knives.

- F|A SILENT RECRUITING XPS

- F|A HARDCORE XPS - team damage is on.

- F|A STOPWATCH SERVER -team damage is on and this server is for competitive purposes.

All of these servers are based on silent mod. No double jump, no poison knives to my knowledge, and have smaller number of slots for players.

So for a beginner it would be interesting to read about the way the game is 'really' played, but it would be different than what they see in public servers, and probably too much information.

Even if the info will most likely not be helpful for a new player who has no intent of ever playing on etpro, let alone playing in cups, it is still valuable info and if you take the time to know and understand how the best players play the game, then it will make your playstyle better. Plenty of "better" players on jaymod/silent do gib and use what they learned from etpro when they pub, even if waiting for spawntimes on a jaymod server is futile, given that spawns are so close and shields last so long.

While there is a lot of info involved in learning to play in a competition setting, I would argue it is much more useful to take the time to learn it early rather than spend time learning to pub and then realizing you want to improve and have to relearn the game completely.

I think I saw you in server the other day, I'd recommend give other members a shout via PMs. I'm not sure how PMs work in COD (I forgot how it's done, probably it's the same :P), so open up the console and:

/m name message

You'll probably run into problems with getting yourself a working GUID (check Chuckun's tutorial for example).

Not exactly gameplay tips, but I think you might find them helpful.

Also, engineer is the manliest class of them all.

To get to know the maps better, I would read up on the objectives because even is everyone is fragging, fighting is happening around key areas on the map. When I first started, I couldn't hit anyone so started out with rnade. It helped me a lot with learning how corners, and distance works (rnading from far distances). Just be careful not to hit teammates with it if you are on a server with ff. If you want, I will be on tomorrow afternoon (est). I would be more than willing to show you around a few maps and explain what is going on. Haha. This game is the best team based/class based fps I have ever played and once you understand who does what when, the rest will come much easier. Hit me up on xfire or send me a pm if you are interested!

If you want to learn thing 'X' you should train thing 'X'
i.e.
play panzerfaust if you want to become good at panzerfaust, play etpro if you want to become good at etpro, play jaymod if you want jaymod, and so on. Don't play rifle if you want to get good at playing medic, for example.

Some things (trickjumping, and similar stuff) might improve your overall mouse control, and you could get improvements in other areas, though.

The problem when it comes to training is, in an average 30minutes map, you fight maybe 5 minutes only, and in those 5 minutes (if you remove backshoots and things that won't teach you anything), you get a very low amount of real training.

That's why everyone usually says in every game 'play against players who are stronger (not too much) than you', I would say you learn the most if you play against strong players who don't hold back (which rarelly happens, because in public servers many players play more for fun and relaxed, they don't try to mercilessly own you, and they don't play all their cards)

Also, fights are very fast, so your brain could miss the key reason for failure or success, because every fight has a different position and you can never repeat the same fight again (even if you could, you would miss the surprise factor, and it won't be the same fight). Eventually you will see a pattern emerging (when I do X, I die, I win only if I do Y, etc.).

Another reason not to play vs bad players, because they might die even if you do something that would never work against a good player.

But everyone has a limit, for example I write these things, yet if you see me playing I still fail :P As a new player you haven't reached your limit yet so you can improve.

First, find or ask around for a starter config; as configs are very important concerning your game-play/pc performance in Wolfenstein. Read into the information on http://www.enemy-territory.net/ *as Acid has posted earlier* which is a very useful site; You can also adjust the config to your specifications the more you learn about commands. The rest is a learning experience really; such as knowing maps/objectives, learning spawns, trick jumps, learning the most effective way to use each class to your advantage *and your teams*, hit boxes.. All to be learned in due time, just be patient/have fun; spectate players from time to time and you will usually learn tricks that way as well.

If you want to learn the maps quicker, just study the map and listed objectives in the screen where you choose your class..Its not always entirely descriptive but it will give you a idea where to go, and what the objectives are.

Strafing, jumping while in a firefight, running away and get healed when ur low on HP, camping, etc...
