StarWars.com has confirmed that the upcoming new “Star Wars” trilogy won’t be the only new films on the way for that universe:

The Star Wars cinematic galaxy is about to experience a Big Bang. Lucasfilm is officially announcing new spinoff films that will expand the mythos and depths of the Star Wars universe in previously unexplored ways.

One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.9k32gm.jpg

In a call to investors, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed while the original focus was on the highly-anticipated sequel trilogy, the idea of spinoff films was bandied about early and the additional films are now becoming a reality. “We are in development of a few standalone films,” he said, “that are not part of the Star Wars saga…there are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films.”

Entertainment Weekly has learned that two strong possibilities for these spinoff films will be following the adventures of Boba Fett and a young Han Solo, though they note that these ideas could change as the stories are “very early in the process.” Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm are commenting further.

I just hope the pick the right material and characters. Expanded universe is so huge they are bound to find something decent. Also J.J. Abrams as director of new episodes? Hell yeah.

I read the books that came out and the one the I liked the most was about the twins born to Leia and Han.

They had extreme capabilities with the Force and the Sith were after them. It was a very good series.

I always thought that it would be a great movie series.

Mark Hamill Talks STAR WARS: EPISODE VII; Says “They’re Talking to Us” but “We Haven’t Signed Any Contracts”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mark Hamill spoke at length regarding his involvement with Star Wars: Episode VII. Yesterday, Showbiz 411 reported that Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford were all set to return, although an earlier report said a deal with Ford wouldn’t be closed for weeks or possibly months. In this case, it’s best to go straight to the source, and Hamill confirmed his earlier comments that George Lucas wanted to know if they were interested, and that the filmmakers have been talking to them. Lucas also told Hamill that if they didn’t want to do the sequels, “they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts; they would write us out.” And on that day, George Lucas finally did something right again. Hamill went on to say, “I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts. We’re in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm.” Hamill added “Both have had meetings set that were postponed — on their end, not mine. They’re more busy than I am.”

Hit the jump for much more including what Hamill assumes will happen with the characters, other actors he’d like to see return, and the visual style of the sequels.
