Alright, so here are my plans for the next F|A Minecraft server, I thought I would share it with you guys here so I can get some feedback and you can share some of your ideas that we can consider doing

 

The biggest change I have in mind is having multiple worlds on 1 server using the Multiverse2 plugin.

What this means is the server will be running 2 worlds that players can switch to at their will without having to have multiple servers and switching from one server to the other to change modes. One world for creative and one for survival. Modes will be switched upon entering either world (inventories will be independent and separate and items cannot be shared from one world to the next)

 

I plan on keeping some of the same plugins we had on the Survival server, such as Shopkeepers, Griefprevention, MCMMO, pvp toggle, and Coreprotect. I'll be posting a few tutorials for those when I can get the time to write them up.

 

Were there any plugins or ideas you guys want to suggest? I am trying to keep this as minimal and easy to manage as possible...things you should keep in mind when suggesting plugins should be

 

How big is the plugin? How complicated is it? does it require a million different permission nodes?

 

I will say this now Worldedit, anything that requires vault (economy plugins), and Factions are out of the question. Worldedit is too huge and easy to crash as server with not to mention it's a resource hog, I don't want to mess with vault, and Factions causes entirely too much drama and I'm never falling for that one again.

 

What I still need to do: I still need to find a good World Seed for the server, preferably one that has a set number of blocks to save on ram and file size.

a map pluggin such as dynamap

it generates a map similar to google maps which you would add to our website... this allows you to see land that is available for building away from spawn and others. allows to see in real time players talking. im not sure how complicated it would be to ass but the description seems simple and it tells you how to do everything. the only down side that you could argue would be that this would allow greifers to know where to go to destroy but truthfully if you dont understand that claiming protects anything from greifing then you cannot follow the simple instructions given at spawn.

 

also I was not really interested in suggesting pluggins i was more interested in building the spawn and making it more aesthetically appealing. i think that making a large interactive and attractive spawn is the key to keeping players on the server. have a central theme and stick to it. protect a large area around the spawn and force people to venture out.

other ideas i have.. and since you are against using world edit, they would have to be built. but they are small areas in the map where we could host wolf games, parkour courses

 

also seeds... seeds are not a big deal. im not and i dont think anyone on the servers is someone that puts random numbers or words in to see what map they generate.... but since you are asking i will google for some really good ones

Only that would involve other server files if I remember correct (bukkit based though, so bukkit plugins would work)

So that's not a real option I guess.

I've known about Dynamap for a long time...always wanted to use it but what I'm worried about is what kind of strain (if any) it could cause the server...we can test it out and if it's too much we can just cut it

 

 

what about something like this for survival? http://dev.bukkit.or...lation-density/

 

I'm also looking into some anti-cheat plugins. none seem all that great so far, some with a lot of false positives

im down for that... to bad it doesnt delete the junk that is left behind and replace it with original terrain and resources

Yeah, I really think the spawns could use a nice makeover, that's my biggest thing.

I find the fact that players in creative cannot set up their own plots rather annoying, and it ends up allowing more griefing in the long run.

It's going to be a new server and a fresh start so we can build new spawns from the ground up, we just need to get together when the time finally comes and hash it out.

 

Plots and griefing shouldn't be a problem in this server since I will have the grief protection from the old survival server on it, much easier to make plots with it, a lot more user friendly, and a lot more effective. Plus there is less of a chance for it to be used for evil.

 

I've found a couple of cool seeds to try out. I'm debating on whether or not we should use two different seeds (one for each mode) or the same seed for both worlds...I'm leaning towards the latter because the file sizes will start out the same and stay relatively similar as time goes on and people build more...what do you guys think? One seed in particular I'm looking at is "2002414356" so if you guys want to check that out in single player I would encourage it, let me know what you think of it.

I have some experiences with setting up dynmap. You should use a low res setting, so the server will generate the pics also faster.

Today I worked on creating a new spawn structure for our upcoming server. Other servers incorporate a form of maze upon entering the server where at each intersection a set of rules is given followed with a a set of directions. I have incorporated this idea into the structure.

most servers go with a medieval theme with a giant castle or fortress type structure. I wanted something different and unique. I have not been to a server where the spawn has been inside of a jungle so I started with the idea of what could be in a jungle. Again, I did not want to do something that other people would expect like a series of tree houses. Then I thought a bit... If you have ever seen the movie The Fountain then you recognize the structure immediately. It is one of the most beautiful and artistic movies with the most amazing soundtrack by Clint Mansell and I highly suggest you watching it if you haven't. Then go to google and learn about how the special effects were done because it is mind-blowing.

I made the structure very large and would like to keep it that size. The maze only takes up the lowest level of the structure to give you and idea of the experience. Layers may be added and each level could be a different type of maze or just keeping it simple "turn left, turn right" thing. The maze however will be nothing more than simple directions. There will be no parkour sections or anything making it difficult for a noob to traverse.

 

This project is unique and I hope you enjoy it.

 

The other structures I plan to incorporate would be a structure housing the nether portal, a structure housing the warp to creative (the creative server would have an identical mirror image of this structure), examples of structures that would be shops people could rent to sell the items they have collected.

Additional structures would be added in the future such as one housing a more difficult maze that would include problem solving, and parkour challenges. Another section for playing the game wolf. If you have not seen this game google minecraft wolf game.

 

I will post screenshot for others who do not have minecraft to enjoy them and possibly influence them into getting the game. I suggest downloading the map before you view the pictures so that it is more awe-inspiring. BTW no it is not in a jungle. I wanted to use flat terrain to eliminate the removal of land in order to save me time. Yes this took hours to do but I enjoyed it and recreating it would be a lot quicker since I am not having to design as I go.

The texture pack I use is LB Photo Realism which can be found on planetminecraft.com It is number 1 under most popular so it is not hard to find

I've updated it a bit further...

I saved and quit the game where the physical spawn point should be inside the temple. If it works you should see a cobblestone wall with signs posted in front of you.

The maze was increased in size so that each rule would have its own intersection with accompanied direction towards the exit.

First Level: Spawn room containing dispensers with the essentials that were provided on the old survival server

Second Level: Maze

Third Level: Maze

Fourth Level: Maze

Got the server mostly configured, still need to sort out permissions, admin groups and all that stuff as well as a bunch more testing before it can be open to the public.

 

I did run into a few snags though. Multiverse combined with McMMO and the other plugins was using up too much RAM, so We're going to have to cut a few until I can figure out what to do.

 

Multiverse - currently disabled - thinking about cutting it and possibly replacing it with two lightweight plugins that do pretty much the same w/o multiple worlds

McMMo - Causes RAM usage to increase by 20%

Essentials - admin commands/system

GriefPrevention - plot/protection system

CoreProtect - used to restore items that have been griefed

Shopkeepers - Used for player shops and the Markkit from the old server

IcePvPControl - Used to manage PvP

 

Some of these like Essentials, GriefPrevention and Coreprotect are too valuable to cut, and the others are just as difficult...so...if there are any of the other 4 that you guys wouldn't care to lose speak up.

IcePVPControl is pointless. No one ever turns it on. Now I finally understand why there is a random arena. I didn't know we could toggle pvp on.

But again I think pvp is pointless. We are not a pvp server. Giving players the option to turn it on would just cause the person who is loosing the fight to whine and complain.
