Wifestein Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I've been getting this problem for a few days now. My screen suddenly turns black for 2 seconds and then I get this error: "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 197.12 stopped responding and has recovered." I went to the NVIDIA site and done Option 2: http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us Told me to update my drivers to Version 310.90, so I did. After that I got this problem: (I couldn't turn the resolution any higher) After uninstalling it and a few restarts it went back to my normal resolution and everything else: Anyone knows if there is a way to fix this? Battlefield 3 made me update my drivers before, but also didn't work because of this exact same problem. Since then I can't even play BF3, I could play it before it forced me to update my drivers. But I don't care about not being able to play BF3. I only want the error to be fixed, It's rather annoying eventhough it's only for a few seconds once every few hours. I think It's a problem with Alienware and NVIDIA, but I'm not sure Quote
PiNoY Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Go to properties of My Computer by right-clicking on it. Click Hardware Profiles and scroll downt o Video Card. Try to Uninstall or Remove the Video Card from the list. This is like removal of the already detected hardware from the list. Do not do a Refresh List. Once that is done, do a hard reboot instead of soft reboot, then pray. PS Do at your own risk! Quote

Vanaraud Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 BACK up your data on external CD\harddrive\ extra partinion as something can go wrong and you would need to reinstall whole windows OS. The thing is after uninstalling drivers usually they leave behind profiles and what not to "save" people most used data for "their convenience". So what I´ve tried to do is uninstall the video driver, then under C:\ there should be some folder NVIDIA(I have ATI) or somewhere, delete that. Then search in windows for "nvidia" it gives many results but on your own risk delete files which implicate that they should be related to drivers or profiles. I think there are files which shouldn´t be touched at all as they are basic drivers for graphics and for AMD\ATI there are also CPU\graphics drivers, so I wouldn´t touch those. Have done it only once or twice but basically you´d want to get rid of nvidia old drivers + profiles. Googling every search result for "nvidia" may help also. Also after uninstalling drivers go to control panel->system->device manager and if it shows you under display drivers your graphics card name then uninstall that too. Basicly what we´d want is to start from scratch the graphics card installation procedure. Then restart and check control panel again. The you can start installing your drivers. Also all newest video drivers may not run in all systems so you could try to run the original driver from CD which came with the graphics card and wait for next update. And for next update wait till the system gives errors before installing (untick auto installs) new drivers, talking it from personal experience Quote
rolf Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Your memory of the graphics card might be corrupt. Check that one https://simtk.org/home/memtest/ (registration required), it was my problem a year ago. You might want to check the main memory as well (memtest86, default with the latest ubuntu iso's), although that usually doesn't only let crash the display driver. Personally I'd say do not use the method of Vanaraud to delete the drivers, good chance you f*** up more than you could imagine. Removing by the control panel should suffice. Quote
Wifestein Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 I think I might have fixed it yesterday after I turned something on, I haven't had the error since. If I don't get it for 2-3days I guess I've fixed it, else I'll try one of the options here :] ty Quote
Ol Smoke Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I don't read German but I can make out enough to know that the driver for your display screen is wrong. Your video driver seems to be working. Your Windows OS is fine. So find out exactly what monitor you have and go to their website and get the proper driver. Once that is done and the resolution is set, your problems should be over. The only thing that can affect your hardware this way is a corrupt driver. The only way to remove it fully, is to use a removal program from the driver maker. To check for a dual driver problem, start the system in safe mode and check your hardware list and see how many drivers it says you have. If this is a factory build PC, you can have up to 5 or 6 different drivers in there, for many different video cards they use. You guys need to purchase a good system cleaner program like "Spotmau Power Suite". It will tune and clean your registry and help keep your system running fresh. Quote

It is Dutch, my screen looks like the third picture, the only problem I wanted to be fixed was to get rid of the error, so far it hasn't come back yet since I turned something on yesterday. Updating my drivers apparently doesn't work because then I get the problem on the second picture, fail NVIDIA For the rest my laptop runs smoothly, is fast and also doesn't lag or anything, the only problem was the error once every few hours for 2 seconds. But I think I might have fixed that now. Quote
PiNoY Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 If it's still not working, I have a cigarette lighter. rawr ! Quote

Wifestein Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 I only just fixed this yesterday, the crashes only seemed to happen when I used firefox, it didn't happen while gaming or something like that All I had to do was turn off the option on firefox called "use hardware acceleration when available" Only took a few months to fix it! I'm sometimes a little bit slow. Didn't trust all the comments with uninstall driver and whatever, I'd for sure mess up my whole laptop then lol so didn't try all that thought I might aswell reply it, maybe it helps someone else, you never know hehe Quote
