frag
So I've got an AMD FX-60 CPU and an eVGA 9600GSO card on an older ASUS mobo w/AM2. 4GB DRAM also so not worried about the memory. Question is, which should I upgrade: the CPU or the GPU? What is the best bang for my buck if I only had one choice? Thx!
Administrators daredevil Posted November 21, 2009 Administrators Share Posted November 21, 2009 If you got money I would suggest Processor and motherboard both at same time. How much you are willing to spend? Thanks giving is coming. Deals will hit the market soon.

-=Medic=-
AMD FX-60 = 2.6MHz Dual core and 90nm (2006 cpu) ... hummmm if you don't mind CPU first then if you want GPU next

I'd get a i7 board, new chip, some ddr3 1600 and then do EVGA folding@home to get some EVGA bucks. Then you will get $100 off towards a vid card, and the 300 series won't be out for awhile. frag
Lots of options but seems like the majority is suggesting a CPU/mobo upgrade. Switching from AMD to Intel. My budget is for one or the other (approx. $250-300) at this point and will likely stick with this for another year (I tend to take a year in between upgrades). Thanks guys and any suggestions on a Vid card upgrade?

Reaver
no i only promoted it because he can go to the store and i make commission, lol. Nevertheless changing those core parts will be a great performance increase, the 9600GSO isn't wonderful but it can still play games just fine, i would be waiting till either the 300 series NVidia cards drop or the new ATI cards drop in price a bit. =TR=Viper
Ive been running an FX-55 and an Nvidia 7900gs on an Abit AN8 32x for a few years. I starting having some weird BSOD's and started swapping some parts. I tested a cheap BFG Geforce 220 I snagged from Bestbuy. I was pretty impressed with the difference in FPS boost with ET, but Quake3 engine is getting pretty old. I eventually solved my BSOD problem and it wasn't the video card so I took it back. I am going to upgrade my rig to an AM3 soon and read a few more reviews on the new cards and get one then.

Ive been running a pretty old video card for awhile. I used to spend a lot of money on hardware upgrades. Since Lucas was born I just didn't have the money for that hobby anymore. Lucas is running a socket 754 board with an ATI X800pro agp. As soon as I upgrade Im gonna give him this mobo. Set him up with a couple high end cards for SLI, max it out on ram and set the board and CPU for some liquid cooling. Should keep him able to play some more modern games for a bit.
