i am looking at the radian 7970 but it is kinda expensive., also processors there are a lot out there, which would be a good match , i am building a water cooled system 6 core and series is what i would like to build ,

Best videocard for what? I guess gaming, and in that case the CPU is completely irrelevant if sufficient (i.e., some i7 or comparable AMD). Better GPU means better graphics.

What is your budget? Find the best AMD and Nvidia (highest serie, so AMD 7xxx or Nvidia 6xx) for your budget, compare those two on the games you play and voila, best GPU :) If you have a strong preference for either brand, you don't even need to compare :P If your budget isn't fixed, look for a GPU both one level higher and lower and compare if the extra costs is worth it, if for example for 10% more budget it is twice as fast it is worth considering (but that'll never be the case :P)

Nvidia GTX 690 ftw!

No, but serious. You want the best graphics card but you think the ATI Radeon 7970 is too expensive...

If you want a good graphics card within a "smaller" budget, I recommend a Nvidia GT 555.

Got one in my laptop, and I can run the Witcher II and Crysis with it, which are some of the heaviest games there are (right now).

I'm not saying I can run it on high, hell not even on medium, but note that it's the laptop verson.

If you got the desktop version you should be able to play "heavy" games at low/medium setting.

If you want to play games like the Witcher II and Crysis on the highest possible setting, you'll need a crossife rig with a cost of over 1000$

The Nvidia GT 555 is a mid grade laptop GPU. It's not something for a desktop...

My 570 GTX runs anything great. BF3 @ 1920x1200 with high/ultra graphics at 80 FPS on my OC'ed i7. I've seen 560's which also rock and probably the lowest end I would personally go. Now there is a new Nvidia 6XX series. The 670GTX is their new version of my card. The 500 series will be less expensive now. Basically 560/570/670 + an i5 or i7 Intel processor and you are good to go. I would go with a brand like EVGA which has certain videocards with a lifetime warranty. Ive had to send in a couple in my day and they will actually upgrade you to the newest line if they are out of a replacement for your card.

There are plenty of performance charts to look at.

Really, it's only laptop?

Didn't know that, but you can still build it into your desktop, however that'd be stupid.

+ It isn't mid grade, I'd rather say it's high/mid grade.

And you play BF3, in full HD, at 80FPS with a 570GTX? Do you have any stats with the Witcher II?

To really put your GPU to the limit BF3 just isn't enough.

The difference between a GT555M(obile) and a GT555 would be about 3 times, however the GT555 doesn't exists :P But that is an approximation which holds quite nicely for mid-end Nvidia GPUs.

Currently, unless you're gaming at 2560x1440, a GTX560 would be sufficient as Tulsa says. Better is only better to be futureproof, but you can be as crazy as you want within your budget. But we need a budget to be more precise.

Get a 670 GTX if money isnt an issue. If you want more than get the 680. If you want to absolute best get 4 680's for quad SLI...

A 560GTX really can't run all games maxed out...

Why not ATI Radeon 7970? It's a damn good graphics card, it may be a bit expensive yes, but it's also more future proof like Rolf stated.

And that one is for desktops.

Lol tulsa @ quad 680 , that would be like 1800$ right?

Well, if you don't have a budget and his wife approves...

With a quad 680 his rig is future proof, for the next ten years.

Well they cost around 500-600 per card so quad would be like 2000$

Hey IKILLCAMPERS, I haven't seen this mentioned but I think most people here might be making the assumption that your going to be using a full size ATX or HTPX case. Whatever your final decision is, make sure that you have an enclosure that will support the length/width of the card. I've seen a few threads in recent months of people buying a high end graphics card only to have it not fit by a few millimeters.

Of course theres always a dremel. ;)

Sounds like an awesome project though. Take some pics of your rig when you get it completed.
