Why does PunkBuster kick me for INIT FAILURE?

Usually, this message means your PB is not working properly. You should run our PBSetup program to make sure your PB is up to date.

However, we have recently discovered that some broadband routers routinely drop OOB (Out of Band) packets for no apparent reason. Since all PB packets are OOB, these routers can actually block PB's communication (again for no apparent reason). To determine if the router is the cause of this problem for you, remove the router and connect directly to the internet. If you are able to play this way, then the cause is very likely the router.

Based on user feedback, the following router brands/models are reported to have problems. Not necessarily all models of a brand might be affected, and the list is in no way complete but it can give you a few hints. Also, we do not claim that our list below shows the only solution to fix your issue, nor that it will fix it for sure even though it has worked for others. It could very well be that changing some settings in your router could help as well. Contacting the company directly might help you as well.

  • Linksys - possible solution: Use firmware 1.44.2
  • Motorola - possible solution: Update to latest firmware
  • Netgear - possible solution: Disable SPI (statefull packet inspection)

I get kicked a lot by PunkBuster for Service Communication errors like "initialization failed" or "heartbeats stopped", how do I fix that?

If you run some type of personal firewall or security software, make sure that you configure it to fully allow our services, especially PnkBstrA.exe. These kicks are most often caused by our PnkBstrA.exe service failing to properly install our PnkBstrB.exe service during gameplay. Also, several Windows 7 users have reported that the following steps corrected the issue for them:

1) login as an Administrator user,

2) open Windows Explorer and browse to c:\windows\system32 (or wherever the windows folder is on your machine) - note: if you run Windows 7 64 bit, you need to browse to c:\windows\syswow64 instead,

3) scroll down and find PnkBstrA.exe,

4) right-click PnkBstrA.exe and choose Properties,

5) click the Compatiblity tab,

6) click the button at the bottom of the window that reads "Change settings for all users",

7) click the checkbox for "Run this program as an administrator",

8) click the "Ok" buttons to accept the changes and get back out.

Sometimes, PB Setup doesn't update all files allocated with PB in mind. For some reason its picky like that, so it might of updated PnkBstrA.exe but not be PnkBstrB.exe. So even if you do a manual update, these files will not match and cause this issue. So, something to that you could do is just save your ETkey and CFG in a seperate folder. Once you do that, it is time to unistall ET do click repair or nothing, just unistall it. Then delete the entire wolfenstein folder period. Then do a reinstall.

If you did click repair, than it was refering back to the orginal PB File which might be outta date. Here is a ET File that i just used last week: http://returntocastlewolfenstein.filefront.com/file/Enemy_Territory;14380

Another reason this might be happening if that your ETKey might be fragmented, so at first try it with a new ETkey, create a new profile and everything and see if you have the same problem. If don't copy that to a different folder than the Previous ETKey you are maintaining and past the old one back in your ETMain folder and try it.
