basicly yes

What PC/laptop do you use?

Suggestion:

Check/Monitor your cpu and gpu core temperatures and the clockratings while playing.

Framedrops happen when the clockratings set itself down due to overheat protection.

If its a Laptop the possibility is even higher.

There are monitoring programs out if your generic drivers dont come with the software yet.

Or use the windows built in task manager

Minimize the ET window when the frame-loss happens, see if differences in cpu+gpu clock Rating or temperatures occure.

(Etlegacy supports minimizing, Et2.6b uses a minimizer)

One easy way is, open the windows buildin task manager and check the performance window.

You will see your cpu+gpu usage.

Another program is aida64.

Its a freeware tool for 30days.

It will show you also temperatures and clockratings.

On the whole subject i can recommend reading this site:

https://geekflare.com/check-cpu-temperature-windows/

Remember, this is just a guess in the wild. Based on your delivered info its very hard to guess, but steady framerate and sudden frame-loss sound like a hot system.

Try cleaning the system with pressured air from dust and such, but dont destroy it.

also replacing the thermalpaste can do wonders, but that should be done by someone with experience.

If you do this be sure to hold your fans still and don't let your inner child start spinning them with the air 😄
There's plenty of examples around the internet of what may happen.

I also had, problems with my FPS unstable and randomly drops, I personaly use steam version now. My suggestion is to check your refresing frequency of your monitor, mine for example is 144Hz and i just needed to add command to r_displayRefresh " your monitor refreshrate". Hope it helps.

I once had a similar problem due to crookedly installed drivers, check how your devices work and if it causes any errors. This is especially true for laptops, I somehow had ET lagging because the discrete video card did not turn on automatically and I played on Intel UHD, which caused a wildly low FPS. The reason for all this was not properly installed drivers, so my advice to you is to check how PC drivers work and what errors occur, if there are errors, reinstall the drivers. If there are errors, try installing older drivers, they are usually more stable, good luck ☺️
